Abstract

Okra fruit has a flavonoid, phytosterol and pectin content, which is potential as an anticholesterol agent. The pharmacological activity of ethanol extract 70 % of okra fruit (EEOF) can be improved by forming nanoemulsion. This study aimed to prepare an ethanol extract 70 % and nanoemulsion of okra fruit and to prove the cholesterol inhibition in vitro EEOF is smaller than the nanoemulsion of EEOF. The okra fruit was extracted by kinetic maceration, the EEOF was analyzed by a phytochemical screening test and cholesterol inhibition assay in vitro using Liebermann-Burchard reagent. The anticholesterol activity was expressed as IC50 values. Nanoemulsion of EEOF prepared by spontaneous emulsification method using capmul, propylenglycol, glycerin (1 : 2.5 : 2 mL). The result of phytochemical screening of okra fruit simplicia and EEOF were contained flavonoid, steroid, triterpenoid, saponin, and coumarin. The resulting nanoemulsion has a 134.7 nm in diameter with a potential zeta value of -26.72 mV. EEOF has IC50 of 764.11 µg/mL and nanoemulsion of EEOF have IC50 of 712.50 µg/mL. Nanoemulsion can improve anticholesterol IC50 value because it was penetrated the gap between cells so that the delivery and bioavailability were higher.

Abstract

An antioxidant is a chemical compound that can bind free radicals in the body. Reactive oxidative species (ROS) is a reaction that involves oxygen. ROS consists of free radicals and non-radical ones. The imbalance between ROS and antioxidants can cause oxidative stress, one of the factors contributing to the development of numerous diseases. This study aims to evaluate the possible antioxidant activity of lengkuas extract (LE), which may be employed as a medicine component to reduce ROS. The method that used in this research were total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, 2,2 diphenyl 1 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), NO scavenging, 2,2′-Azinobis(3-Ethylbenzthiazoline-6-Sulfonate) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The result shows that the TPC of LE was 6.80 ± 0.34 (GAE) µg/mg with gallic acid standard and the TFC was 3.39 ± 0.06 µg/mg by quercetin standard. The IC50 value of LE were 121.20; 87.65; 139.94; 181.09 µg/ml by ABTS, DPPH, NO, and H2O2 assay respectively. The scavenging activity of LE was increased with a higher concentration in every method. In conclusion, Alpinia galanga has the potential as an antioxidant. Thus, it can be widely consumed or used as a mixture in medicine to reduce ROS.

Abstract

Senior High School (SMA) has a very broad scientific scope, one of which is chemistry. In chemistry, it presents the processes, chemical notations, types, and arrangements of matter. Chemical processes can be written in a concise form, such as a reaction equation, without eliminating the microscopic and macroscopic aspects that occur in the chemical process. This equation for the reaction is a symbolic aspect of chemistry. All the substances involved in the equation of the reaction are also symbolic aspects of chemistry. In other words, chemical formulas, such as atomic symbols, element symbols, compound symbols or formulas, all of these are symbolic aspects of chemistry. This symbolic aspect is of great importance in chemistry. Training on the use of ChemSketch software is very important for high school students, especially science majors, as an enrichment for chemistry subjects and improves skills in presenting chemical data in order to improve the quality of graduates. ChemSketch software provides process symbols, chemical notations, types, arrangement of materials, and several image representations of various laboratory tools, which are quite easy to use. Training on the use of ChemSketch for SMA N 13 Depok students has been enthusiastically carried out online, the material is relevant to chemistry subject matter, easy to accept and the delivery of the material is quite interesting.

Abstract

Propolis is a widely used medicine that may be found in both its pure form and when combined with othernatural ingredients in over-the-counter preparations, cosmetics, and health foods. Some customers develop alcohol sensitivity after using ethanol, which is a common solvent to extract propolis. As propolis solvents, various Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NaDES) were examined in this study. Choline chloride, propylene glycol, glycerol, citric acid, and 1,2-propanediol were combined in molar ratios to create some of the NaDES that were employed. Propolis and solvents were used in a kinetic maceration ratio for the extraction process. The Folin-Ciocalteu method was used to measure the total phenolic content (TPC), and the DPPH assay was used to measure antioxidant activity. In ethanol and NaDES solvents, the TPC of propolis extract ranged from 136.52 ± 27.9 to 365.8 ± 20.54 mgGAE/g. The values for antioxidant activity were 45.94 to 183.76 ppm. The propolis extract with the lowest IC50 and the highest TPC content was choline chloride-glycerol (CCG). It was discovered that the optimum NaDES solvent for extracting propolis was CCG-based. NaDES may be a potential solvent for use in Indonesian propolis, both as an extraction medium and as a formulation element.

Abstract

The use of mouthwash is one of the actions against biofilms that are often used. However, commercial mouthwashes have a fairly high alcohol content, which is around 26.9% of the total volume, which is considered to have a prolonged impact where high alcohol content in direct contact with the oral mucosa can cause lesions or abnormalities, resulting in a shift in the medical paradigm towards eco-friendly widely considered as a solution. Propolis with antibacterial ability was formulated using the nanoemulsion steps, which were initiated by separating pure propolis through drying, and then there were variations in the formulation of 3 types of bee propolis: Heterotrigona itama, Tetragonula sapiens, and Tetragonula clypearis along with the addition of Tween 80, propylene glycol, glycerin and then the effect on microbial growth of S. mutans was compared with antimicrobial agents in Brazilian propolis with the identification and comparison of the antibacterial activity stability of the organoleptic formula. Where the active ingredient content of propolis is the highest in H. itama propolis with a total flavonoid content of 38.94 mgQE/L sample and T. clypearis propolis has the lowest total flavonoid content of 14.23 mgQE/L sample with its function as an anti-oral biofilm agent by inhibiting the glucosyltransferase was proven with a minimum percentage of 49% inhibition of S. mutans and degradation of 18% with the use of a combined surfactant proved to be able to increase the stability of the preparation shown at 2:1 (v/v).

Abstract

Elementary school children generally start to be able to choose the foods they want. However, when selecting foods, they tend to choose visually appealing, inexpensive, and easily accessible foods without considering their nutritional content. This makes elementary school children vulnerable to health problems due to unhealthy snacks. The aim of this community service activity is to increase students' knowledge about dangerous snacks and how to detect them, provide examples of healthy alternatives from medicinal plants, and practice making food and drinks from medicinal plants. This educational activity is conducted at Athalla Cendekia Elementary School in Bogor. The method used in this community service activity is delivering materials and practicing the detection of additives such as rhodamine-b, formalin, and borax in several snack food samples around the school. Some of the snack foods tested include sausages, meatballs, sauces, fried tofu, fried meatballs, jelly, and sweetened condensed milk. Testing is carried out using reagent kits, and all 6th-grade students (25 students) are actively involved in the implementation process. Food and drink processing are conducted through direct practice in the manufacturing process and direct practice in the planting process of medicinal plants. The results of the activity show that the training proceeds attractively, with each child recording the test results in a testing booklet and being able to present the test results. Some foods tested positive for containing formalin, while some tested negative. With this education and training on detecting additives, students' knowledge increases as they can identify the types of foods containing harmful additives in the tested samples.
