Abstract

This community service program was conducted by the PUI Mangrove USU and PKR Mangrove Ecology PREE BRIN teams in Muaragembong District, Bekasi Regency, West Java on October 26, 2024. The aim was to raise awareness and support the conservation of mangrove ecosystems to improve community pond productivity. Primary data were collected through field observations, interviews, and purposive sampling of 12 members of the KTH Sumber Makmur group. Activities included planting 10,000 Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia sp. seedlings, educational outreach, and focus group discussions on mangrove functions in environmental protection and socio-economic development. The silviforestry approach, integrating fish, shrimp, and seaweed cultivation in mangrove ecosystems, has increased production while maintaining water quality. Planned mangrove ecotourism development offers further economic potential if supported by local regulations. These efforts are expected to improve ecosystem sustainability and local welfare.

Abstract

Regional development must be balanced and sustainable, particularly in managing the Belawan Watershed, which includes Deli Serdang and Medan. Proper spatial planning is essential to maintaining the upstream and downstream ecosystems and ensuring environmental sustainability. This study aims to analyze the availability of agricultural land in the upper Belawan Watershed to meet human needs. Additionally, it seeks to provide guidance on land allocation within spatial planning and develop sustainable land allocation recommendations for the future. The research methodology employs a qualitative descriptive approach to explain land use and a quantitative approach for presenting numerical data that can be processed using simple calculations. The study concludes that nearly all land in the upper Belawan sub-watershed has been utilized, with only 0.6% remaining as an ecological buffer. The most significant land-use change has been the conversion of production forests into plantations, covering an area of 4,808.70 hectares. Future spatial planning must balance land use with environmental conservation.

The program involved 50 local participants organized into two partner groups: the Ecoprint Artisan Group and the Mangrove Ecotourism Management Group. Both groups underwent intensive training on producing eco-friendly ecoprint products using natural dyes from local flora, as well as managing ecotourism that emphasizes environmental conservation. Results of community service indicated a 70% improvement in the skills of the partner groups, with product diversification increasing from three to seven types of ecoprint, leading to a 20% increase in artisan income. Additionally, the Ecotourism Management Group attracted over 200 visitors within the first six months, contributing a 15% boost to village revenue. The empowerment initiatives enhanced the economic independence of the partner groups, allowing them to manage their businesses autonomously, including marketing ecoprint products and mangrove tour packages.
