Abstract

Pawon Garden is a building complex located in Parung, Bogor, consisting of several translocated Javanese vernacular (Omah) buildings. This study aims to determine the process of translocation of Javanese Omah in Pawon Garden Parung in a narrative manner, resulting in knowledge about the translocation of Javanese vernacular buildings as an effort of ex-situ conservation in architectural terms. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to show the translocation process of Javanese vernacular buildings, starting from technical specifications, elements, and materials. The building translocation process discussed in this study is divided into three stages: the dismantling process, the translocation process, and the reconstruction process. Several changes to the building occur as a form of adjustment of the building to its new environment and functions. The changes reduce the authenticity of the building. However, most of the elements and structures in the translocated Javanese Omah are still the original components of the original building.

Abstract

The place identity needs to be resurfaced visual-architecturally through place-making and community engagement. From participatory identification of tangible and intangible cultural assets, cultural mapping can increase awareness of cultural assets and a sense of belonging, facilitate network development and collaboration, and prepare village development programs according to local potential. This study aims to compile the potential and resources of Kampung Baran in a participatory manner, and then present it as significant cultural character data in shaping the identity of the place. The research was conducted qualitatively through asset mapping and community identity mapping. Asset mapping is related to the physical resources, while community identity mapping identifies intangible resources. Physical data recording is done through field observation. The on-site data mapping is triangulated through focus group discussions and in-community conversation to identify the intangible resources. Furthermore, the data were categorised, and the relations were analysed to compile the cultural mapping. The results showed that the unity between architectural elements (recontextualization of Omah Gejug), communal space according to the taneyan pattern of Kampung Baran, typical plants, local culinary, traditional arts and language, as well as socio-cultural systems and structures can be visualized to support the revitalization of place identity.

Abstract

Kota Probolinggo merupakan salah satu kota peninggalan zaman penjajahan Belanda. Menurut Hidayat & Widriyakara (2018), Kota Probolinggo menerapkan bentuk pengawasan panoptikon. FROM REALITY TO DISCOURSE: REPRESENTATION OF PANOPTICISM IN PROBOLINGGO CITY’S PLANNING Probolinggo City is one of the heritage cities of the Dutch colonial era. According to Hidayat & Widriyakara (2018), the City of Probolinggo represents a form of panopticon surveillance. However, the definition of the panopticon only partially means physically in the form of Probolinggo City. This research aims to reveal that the City of Probolinggo is not only a form of city that applied physical surveillance but also portrays panopticism. Using synchronic-diachronic descriptive analysis, this study describes the history of the development of Probolinggo City before 1743, 1743-1850, 1850-the 1880s, and 1880s-1940 to describe the form of power and control of panopticism at that time and its relation to the morphology of Probolinggo City today.

Abstract

Abstract

Candra Naya is a Chinese style heritage building that has been standing since the 19th century. During its journey, this building has undergone several conversions from being a residence to now becoming a museum. After being conserved adaptively into a museum and new buildings construction arose around it, many adjustments to the Candra Naya building were made. This study was conducted to assess the authenticity of the post-conservation of Candra Naya using the Nara Grid instrument. This research using an exploratory mixed method, a combination of qualitative and quantitative study. The results of both research methods were analyzed into six aspects and four dimensions of the Nara Grid. The evaluation results indicate that the authenticity of the Candra Naya building is in the proper category. The building elements, in visually, spatially, and structurally terms, are still following the original, where some materials are only polished for maintenance. Some of the changes made are non-destructive and only as an adjustment to the new building built around the site.

Abstract

Space is an important element in indigenous communities because it reflects cultural values, belief systems, and patterns of social life. This study aims to analyze indigenous community perceptions of sacred and profane spaces in the Beleq Gumantar Traditional Village, North Lombok Regency, identify the forms and meanings of spaces perceived as sacred or profane, and explain how these perceptions influence spatial utilization practices. The research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious leaders, cultural custodians, and community members. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the indigenous community has a clear perception of the distinction between sacred and profane spaces. Sacred spaces are associated with ritual activities, religious practices, and ancestral reverence, while profane spaces are used for social, economic, and domestic activities. These perceptions influence patterns of spatial utilization, accessibility, and customary regulations governing the use of space. The study also reveals that perceptions of sacred and profane spaces contribute to maintaining social order, preserving cultural identity, and sustaining traditional spatial systems despite the challenges posed by modernization. This research contributes to the understanding of spatial perception in indigenous communities and provides insights for cultural heritage preservation and culturally based spatial planning.

Abstract

The development of the times and the pressure of social change have threatened the survival of vernacular architecture, including the Joglo house as a Javanese cultural heritage. One form of ex-situ preservation carried out by the Ngloro Village community is to move the Joglo house to a new location. This translocation process not only involves the physical movement of the building but also triggers changes in its visual and spatial form. This study aims to identify the typology of post-translocation Joglo houses in Ngloro Village, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta. The method employed is a qualitative-descriptive approach, utilizing a case study of 14 translocated Joglo houses. Data collection was conducted through direct observation and non-structured interviews, which were then analyzed typologically and contextually using the theory of adaptive reuse. The results of the study indicate that the adaptation process resulting from the translocation of Joglo houses has created new typologies, including changes in roof shape, facade, floor materials, foundations, orientation, building position, and room functions. Roof typology is dominated by a combination of Joglo–Limasan–Pelana roofs, while core structures such as saka guru and tumpang sari are retained. Adaptation to the new location context and functional needs results in a transformation that preserves the fundamental value of the building. Therefore, relocated Joglo houses do not represent heritage degradation but rather the adaptive and sustainable evolution of traditional architecture.
