Abstract

Humanitarian aid is one of the most critical components of disaster response. However, relief distribution during the emergency phase is frequently driven by donor availability rather than by the actual needs of affected communities. Consequently, while essential supplies such as food and drinking water are often adequately provided, personal necessities that directly influence dignity, hygiene, and daily living remain insufficient. Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) is recommended as a systematic approach to identify priority needs and improve the effectiveness of humanitarian interventions. This community service program aimed to implement a Rapid Needs Assessment before humanitarian aid distribution for victims of the 2025 flash flood in Padang City, Indonesia. The program was conducted during the emergency response period following the flash flood on 26 November 2025. A collaborative team of university lecturers and members of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) Padang Branch conducted field observations and semi-structured interviews with affected households at evacuation sites. Information on assistance already received and unmet priority needs was collected and used to guide the procurement and distribution of relief items. Most affected households had already received temporary shelter, food, and clean water. However, essential personal items—including towels, baby supplies, underwear, blankets, prayer equipment, umbrellas, and raincoats—remained insufficient. Implementing Rapid Needs Assessment enabled the humanitarian team to provide targeted assistance, complement existing relief efforts, minimize duplication, and address overlooked needs. Rapid Needs Assessment improved the relevance and effectiveness of humanitarian aid distribution. Collaboration between higher education institutions and professional organizations offers a practical model for evidence-based community service in disaster response.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia and obesity are major metabolic disorders characterized by abnormal lipid metabolism, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress, all of which contribute to progressive renal injury. Excessive accumulation of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) promotes macrophage infiltration and foam cell formation within renal tissue, accelerating glomerular damage and increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease. Aloin, the principal anthraquinone glycoside isolated from Aloe vera, possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may attenuate oxidative injury and inhibit foam cell formation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of oral aloin administration on renal foam cell formation in male Mus musculus with dyslipidemia-induced obesity. A true experimental study employing a posttest-only control group design was conducted using male mice with experimentally induced dyslipidemia and obesity. Animals were randomly allocated into control and treatment groups. The treatment group received oral aloin for 28 consecutive days following dyslipidemia induction. Kidney tissues were collected for histopathological examination using Hematoxylin–Eosin staining. Foam cell formation was evaluated microscopically, and differences between groups were analyzed using the Independent Samples t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Histopathological analysis demonstrated that aloin administration reduced renal foam cell formation compared with the untreated control group. The treatment group exhibited approximately 25% foam cell formation, whereas the control group demonstrated approximately 93.8%. These findings suggest that aloin suppresses lipid accumulation and inflammatory responses within renal tissue through its antioxidant activity. Nevertheless, the therapeutic effect remained lower than that reported for atorvastatin, indicating that aloin is more appropriately considered a complementary rather than a replacement therapy. Oral administration of aloin effectively reduced foam cell formation in the kidneys of dyslipidemia-induced obese male mice. The protective effect is likely mediated through antioxidant activity, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and attenuation of inflammatory processes.

Abstract

The use of antibiotics is still carried out in the health world so that it will cause a big problem, namely antibiotic resistance. The use of antibiotics has also been limited but cannot be stopped. The use of probiotics as therapy in the world of health is increasing every year, so it is necessary to study the combination of antibiotics and probiotics so as not to reduce the effectiveness of probiotics later. This study aims to determine the resistance ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates from Buffalos Milk Fermentation (called as dadiah) Bukittinggi against antibiotics. This research uses a descriptive, experimental method where the observations made are related to the total mass of isolates per ml and the clear zone of LAB isolates from dadiah Bukittinggi against antibiotics. In this study, five types of LAB isolates from dadiah Bukittinggi were used, and it was found that the total mass of isolates ranged from 4-194 x108 CFU/ml. In addition to antibiotic resistance, it was known that dadiah LAB isolates resisted Kanamycin and Penicillin by 75%. While on the antibiotic chloramphenicol, ampicillin and tetracyclin, the four isolates are suspect to the antibiotic. The five LAB isolates of dadiah used in the study, DS1 isolate had the best total mass and was resistant to kanamycin and penicillin

Abstract

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of gambier (Uncaria gambir Roxb.), which is rich in catechin, a major bioactive compound with strong antioxidant activity. Variations in catechin content and antioxidant activity of Indonesian gambier are influenced by geographical origin, plant characteristics, and processing and extraction methods. This study aims to comprehensively review the catechin content and antioxidant activity of Indonesian gambier based on scientific publications from the last decade (2015–2025). A narrative literature review method was applied by collecting relevant articles from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Garuda databases. Selected studies were original research articles reporting quantitative data on catechin levels and/or antioxidant activity of gambier originating from Indonesia. The results indicate that Indonesian gambier, particularly from West Sumatra, exhibits high catechin content and strong antioxidant activity, although considerable variation exists among regions and extraction techniques. Advanced extraction and purification methods, including solvent optimization and ultrasonic-assisted extraction, were shown to enhance catechin concentration and antioxidant capacity. Indonesian gambier has significant potential as a natural antioxidant source, highlighting the need for quality standardization and further development of processing technologies to support value-added utilization and downstream product development.

Abstract

Epistaxis is one of the most common emergencies encountered in otorhinolaryngology–head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS) practice. Although most cases are mild, severe epistaxis, particularly of posterior origin, may lead to serious complications. This literature review aims to comprehensively discuss epistaxis, including its definition, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, classification, and principles of management based on clinical guidelines. A narrative literature review method was applied by analyzing textbooks, clinical guidelines, and scientific journals related to epistaxis, including Logan Turner’s guidelines, the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) recommendations, and otorhinolaryngology consensus statements. Epistaxis is classified into anterior and posterior types based on the bleeding source, each with distinct pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical implications. Anterior epistaxis is commonly associated with local factors and generally responds well to conservative treatment, whereas posterior epistaxis is often related to systemic conditions and requires more aggressive interventions. Management should follow a stepwise approach in accordance with clinical guidelines. Epistaxis is an important ORL-HNS emergency that requires a systematic diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Understanding the pathophysiology and classification of epistaxis is essential for selecting effective and safe management strategies based on clinical guidelines, thereby reducing complications and recurrence

Abstract

Nutritional problems remain a major challenge in community health development, particularly in rural areas. The Indonesian government has introduced the “Isi Piringku” concept as a visual guideline for balanced nutrition; however, its implementation requires more innovative educational approaches. This community service activity aimed to improve knowledge and awareness of balanced nutrition through technology-based “Isi Piringku” education as an effort to prevent nutritional problems in Nagari Padang Gantiang. The community service program was conducted in Nagari Padang Gantiang, Sangir Jujuan District, South Solok Regency, over a 21-day period. Participants included housewives, posyandu cadres, elementary school teachers, and village officials. Educational methods involved technology-based counseling using educational videos, interactive discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. The program resulted in improved participants’ understanding of the “Isi Piringku” concept, particularly the application of the 3J principles (timing, quantity, and type of food) in complementary feeding practices. Educational videos effectively facilitated comprehension of balanced nutrition messages. In addition, the activity fostered community commitment to developing a nutrition-aware village program through the establishment of a healthy garden to support complementary feeding practices. Technology-based “Isi Piringku” education is effective in enhancing community nutrition knowledge and awareness. The integration of digital media and participatory community activities can support stunting prevention efforts and promote the development of a healthy and nutrition-conscious village
