Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is any influence of silent reading strategy on students’ reading comprehension SMAN 15 Muaro Jambi. This research used a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental approach, including a quantitatively accepted pre-test and post-test. This research used total sampling namely population and sample of 34 people 17 students of Class XI A were selected as the control class and 17 students of Class XI B were selected as the experimental class. The technique of collecting data is by multiple choice questions in this research, the data analysis technique used the t-test (independent sample T-test) on the SPSS for Windows version 25 program. The results of this research indicate that Students’ reading comprehension in text taught using the silent reading strategy post-test the average count (mean) is 71.18 that value higher than the class using reading aloud to comprehend a narrative text in English subject namely the post-test average count (mean) is 62.06. and from data Analysis by Independent sample T Test t-count is 3.221 with the value t-table (2.369) by its result then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The result of this study showed that there is an influence on the use of the Silent Reading Strategy towards students’ reading comprehension, and also it can be concluded that this silent reading strategy can applied in class besides that it helps a teacher increase Students’ reading comprehension in a text.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to explain whether picture series can improve students' abilities and describe the factors that influence changes in writing news item text using picture series. The research method used in this study is PTK (Classroom Action Research). The object of this research is class X students. The researcher uses 2 types of research instruments which are quantitative and qualitative. In quantitative, the researcher gives a writing test. While in qualitative, the researcher chose one of the teachers as a collaborator to observe and fill in the note field when the researcher taught during the research. Based on the results of the analysis data, the researchers obtained evaluation score I was 63.29 and evaluation II was 77.14. This shows that using picture series can improve students' writing skills. Factors that influence changes in students' writing ability using this media are visible from classroom management, media used by teachers, and learning methods.Keyword : Writing, News Item, Picture Series.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze students’ writing skills in descriptive text by using the movie The School for Good and Evil. The method was descriptive quantitative with 17 second-semester students of Batanghari University as the sample. Data were collected through a writing test in which students described one of the movie characters. The results showed that the average score was 81.47, categorized as excellent. Eleven students (64.71%) were in the excellent category and six students (35.29%) were in the good category. This shows that movies can effectively stimulate students to improve descriptive writing.

Abstract

Listening is one of the essential skills in learning English. However, many students struggle to develop strong listening abilities. Several factors contribute to their low performance in this area. This study aimed to address students’ difficulties in mastering listening skills by applying a drama movie reviewing technique. The research used a research and development design, involving 30 students from general conversation classes. Data were gathered through interviews, questionnaires, and listening achievement tests. The findings revealed that students who were taught using the drama movie viewing technique achieved a higher average listening score (81.46). Additionally, the technique contributed 61.8% to the improvement of their listening skills.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the learners’ needs for eighth-grade students of SMP N 3 Jambi, and (2) to develop appropriate materials for eighth-grade students of SMP N 3 Jambi. This was a Research and Development (R&D) study. The subjects of the study were the students in the eighth grade of SMP N 3 Jambi. The research procedures were adapted from Jolly and Bolitho’s model in Tomlinson (1998) with some modifications, consisting of conducting the need analysis, writing the course grid, developing the first draft, getting expert judgment, and evaluating the first draft, also revising the first draft of the materials. The instruments to collect the data were need analysis questionnaire and an expert judgment questionnaire. The data from the need analysis were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and percentage, then the results were used to develop the course grid. The data from the expert judgment were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics while the suggestions were used to revise the first draft of the materials. The product of this research is a set of writing materials entitled “Guide for Writing” for students of the eighth grade of SMP N 3 Jambi. The writing materials consist of three units, “My Best Friend”, “My Unforgettable Experience”, and “My Favorite Story”. Each unit consists of Pre-writing, Drafting, Responding, and Editing tasks ranging from 15-17 tasks. Based on the research findings from the expert judgment, the whole aspects of the developed materials were 3.62 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4 and can be categorized as “very good”.

Abstract

This community service program, designed as English training based on interactive learning and character education, aims to enhance both language competence and character development of high school students in preparing for global challenges. The program was conducted over two months through eight online sessions and supported by eight months of intensive mentoring via WhatsApp groups. The training materials integrated Indonesian cultural elements and global issues while instilling the CERMAT character values (Intelligent, Energetic, Brave, Diligent, Millennial, Noble Morals, and Responsible). Evaluation results indicate that the program successfully met participants’ expectations, particularly through interactive learning methods and continuous mentoring that addressed students’ needs. Significant improvements were observed in English skills, including listening, speaking, grammar, writing, and vocabulary, as well as in character aspects such as self-confidence, responsibility, cooperation, and courtesy. With its holistic approach, the program not only strengthened students’ linguistic competence but also fostered positive character development, thereby better preparing them to face challenges at national and global levels. Recommendations for future implementation include greater flexibility in duration and diversification of materials to optimize effectiveness and sustain students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

Kemiskinan merupakan kondisi yang hingga saat ini masih menjadi permasalahan di Indonesia. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari masih tingginya jumlah penduduk miskin di Indonesia pada tahun 2021 mencapai 26,5 juta jiwa. Kemiskinan ini tidak terjadi begitu saja, salah satunya karena minimnya penghasilan rumah tangga sehingga membuat mereka tak mampu memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Pemberantasan kemiskinan di Indonesia memerlukan kerjasama berbagai pihak, baik pemerintah maupun swasta. Oleh sebab itu, tim pengabdian masyarakat bersama LAZ Dompet Dhuafa menjalankan program berbasis kearifan lokal untuk meningkatkan ekonomi masyarakat pesisir melalui pemberdayaan perempuan. Program ini menyasar 50 perempuan keluarga nelayan kerang hijau di wilayah pesisir pantai Serang, Provinsi Banten, Indonesia. Wilayah ini merupakan wilayah penghasil kerang hijau tetapi belum terbudidayakan dengan baik. Praktek nelayan masih dilakukan secara manual sehingga hasil yang didapatkan tidak optimal. Hal ini berdampak pada tingkat penghasilan masyarakat yang masih rendah. Program pengabdian dalam bentuk pemberdayaan masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat melalui pemberdayaan perempuan keluarga nelayan. Program dijalankan selama satu tahun dengan pendampingan penuh. Program ini melingkupi pemberian modal usaha, pelatihan skil, dan pendampingan usaha. Evaluasi dampak program ini dihitung dengan metode SLIA (Sustainable Livelihood Impact Assessmen. Hasil program pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa program memberikan dampak yang positif terhadap kesejehteraan masyarakat. Hal ini dapat dilihat baik dari aspek peningkatan pendapatan, aspek fisik, aspek alam, aspek sumber daya manusia, maupun aspek sosial.

Abstract

The popularity of social media between students can be used as a language teaching tool. One of popular is Instagram this is a social network that can be use to take pictures and videos, and share publicly or privately on the application. This study aims to research the effectiveness of using Instagram as a online media toward writing descriptive text. This research was conducted toward the tenth grade of senior high school 8 Jambi city in semester two there were 34 students participated in this test. Seventeen students participated in control class and also seventeen students in experimental class. Based on the researcher findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the use of instagram as online media toward writing descriptive text at the tenth grade of Senior high school  8 Jambi City. It was proven by the students mean score improvement from pre-test and post-test. The students mean score of pre test was 36,76. Which was classified as very poor classification, while that of post-test was higher than mean score of pre-test as 53.67 which was classified poor category. Moreover, based on the data analysis, t-test was value. It means that there was a significant difference. Therefore H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Abstract

In learning English especially in writing, the students made errors to write dialogue. They have lack of vocabulary and less idea in writing English sentence. They also need to consider about the grammatical components of English that differ from Indonesian language. The aim of this research was to describe errors made by the students in writing dialogue script. Thirty students from Eighth grade of SMPN 3 Kota Jambi were asked to write about free essay in dialogue script. All students writing are, then, analyzed in order to investigate students' errors. Based on findings of this research in linguistic category and surface strategy, it can be concluded that the students have difficulties in grammar (tenses, preposition, agreement, article), lexicon (vocabulary and spelling), punctuation for linguistic category and addition (double marking, regularization, simple addition), omission, misformation (regularization, archi- form, alternating form), misordering for surface strategy. Most students tend to have difficulties in spelling and omission.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah 1) untuk mengetahui target dan kebutuhan belajar siswa kelas sebelas dari Jurusan Teknik Program dan Penyiaran Televisi, 2) untuk mengembangkan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris yang sesuai untuk siswa kelas sebelas dari Jurusan Teknik Program dan Penyiaran Televisi berdasarkan Kurikulum 2013. Ini adalah studi Penelitian dan Pengembangan (R&D). Siswa kelas sebelas dari Jurusan Program TV dan Teknik Penyiaran SMK Negeri 5 Muaro Jambi menjadi subjek penelitian. Data untuk evaluasi materi dan analisis kebutuhan dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner. Guru bahasa Inggris diwawancarai menggunakan panduan wawancara untuk melakukan analisis kebutuhan. Analisis kuantitatif dilakukan pada data kuantitatif yang diperoleh dari evaluasi materi dan analisis kebutuhan. Analisis kualitatif dilakukan pada data kualitatif dari wawancara. Kebutuhan target mencakup tujuan pembelajaran, kebutuhan, keinginan, dan kekurangan siswa. Posisi guru, proses pembelajaran, masukan pembelajaran, dan lingkungan semuanya merupakan bagian dari kebutuhan pembelajaran. Tiga unit bahan pendidikan dalam bahasa Inggris telah dibuat. Tiga komponen dalam desain setiap unit adalah pengantar, pelajaran utama, dan penguatan. Pelajaran utama unit ini menggunakan pembelajaran berbasis proyek, yang dimodifikasi oleh Stoller (2002). Penilaian ahli kemudian digunakan untuk menilai kesesuaian materi yang dibuat dalam hal bahasa, presentasi, tata letak, dan konten. Sumber daya tersebut dikategorikan dengan tepat berdasarkan temuan pendapat ahli karena mereka mencakup komponen pembelajaran dan tema yang relevan dengan program studi siswa. Skor rata-rata untuk ketiga unit yang dikembangkan adalah 3,94, masuk dalam rentang "sangat baik" 3,75 < x ≤ 4.
