Abstract

This research investigates the correlation between directed writing activities and students' listening skills among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Selatan. English, as a global language, is crucial for communication and knowledge acquisition. However, many Indonesian students face challenges in mastering English, particularly in writing and listening. This study aims to explore whether directed writing activities can enhance students' listening skills, thereby improving overall language proficiency. The study employed a quantitative research method, collecting primary data through observations, interviews, and tests from 30 randomly selected students. The analysis utilized Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between the variables. The results revealed a significant positive correlation (rxy = 0.645) between directed writing activities and listening skills, indicating that students who engaged in directed writing activities demonstrated improved listening skills. The findings suggest that incorporating directed writing activities in the English curriculum can effectively enhance students' listening abilities. This approach not only aids in developing writing skills but also reinforces listening, creating a more comprehensive language learning experience. The study recommends that educators adopt interactive and integrative teaching techniques to foster both writing and listening skills among students. The research concludes that directed writing activities significantly contribute to improving students' listening skills, emphasizing the need for innovative teaching strategies in English language education. Further studies are suggested to explore the impact of such activities on other language skills and in different educational settings to generalize the findings.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill in English language learning, yet many students continue to face challenges in understanding written texts. This study aims to improve students’ reading comprehension through the use of short stories as an instructional medium. The research was conducted at SMK Swasta Panca Dharma Padangsidimpuan using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, which consisted of two cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. The sample included 30 students from class X Akuntansi. Data were collected using pre-tests, post-tests, and classroom observations. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension. The average pre-test score was 43.67, increasing to 68.00 in post-test I, and reaching 80.00 in post-test II. The percentage of students achieving the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM) increased from 20% to 83.33%. These findings indicate that the use of short stories can be an effective and engaging strategy to enhance reading comprehension in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Undangan pernikahan selama ini menggunakan cara konvensional, dengan kertas. Biaya yang tidak murah, pencetakan undangan yang membutuhkan waktu lama, dan isu lingkungan dalam penggunaan kertas. Perkembangan teknologi dan revolusi internet yang begitu cepat memberikan kemudahan bagi kehidupan manusia. Kemunculan undangan pernikahan berbentuk digital memberikan solusi terhadap masalah yang ada. Undangan pernikahan tidak lagi menggunakan media kertas. Undangan pernikahan dengan desain user interface (UI) dan user experience (UX) memberikan pengalaman baru. Perancangan UI/UX merupakan tahap yang penting karena memberikan kesan awal bagi calon user. Perancangan undangan pernikahan digital menggunakan pendekatan metode design thinking, yaitu metode desain yang dilakukan secara berulang (iterative). Metode ini terdiri dari beberapa tahapan, yaitu empathize, define, ideate, prototype, dan testing. Proses empathize menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara. Responden kuesioner berjumlah 92 orang dengan rentang usia 25 hingga 35 tahun dan memiliki tingkat ekonomi menengah ke atas. Selain berasal dari kalangan well educated, responden merupakan pengguna internet aktif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, responden lebih menyukai gaya desain undangan simple modern. Pada proses define, pengguna membutuhkan beberapa template undangan pernikahan digital dengan nuansa internasional dan tradisional. Dirancang interaktif, user friendly, dan memiliki fitur-fitur yang dapat dikustomisasi. Selanjutnya proses ideation dilakukan berdasarkan analisis dari proses define, yaitu perancangan mobile website templates undangan pernikahan digital. Calon pengantin dipermudah dengan beberapa pilihan template. Proses prototype dilakukan dengan mendapatkan desain awal kemudian diujicobakan (testing) dan dilakukan secara berulang (iterative) untuk mendapatkan feedback dari calon pengantin demi mendapatkan undangan pernikahan digital yang dibutuhkan calon pengantin.
