Abstract

Madura is an area in Indonesia that is well-known for its high cattle population. However, like many other industries, the Sonok cattle business in Madura has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to determine the extent of this impact, as well as the adaptation and livelihood strategies of Sonok cattle farmers, a study was conducted in West Dempo Village, Pasean District, Pamekasan Regency. This village is the center of superior Sonok cattle and the origin of their existence. The study used descriptive statistics as its method and found that the pandemic has caused a decline in the prices of Sonok cattle and lowered the motivation of farmers to buy them. As a result, farmers have had to adapt and reduce costs wherever possible. The access to capital owned by Sonok cattle breeders, however, is relatively good and is used to form a livelihood strategy. These strategies include on-farm strategies, multiple livelihood patterns, and migration. In response to the pandemic, some farmers have also added other farm animals, such as fighting chickens, to their livelihood strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

In fact, the magnitude of the economic potential worth of tobacco commodities is not directly proportionate to the conditions encountered by farmers in the field. Tobacco farmers in Bajang Village are faced with many problems that may indicate risks that threaten the sustainability of farming activities. The goals of this research are to: (1) identify the risks faced by farmers in tobacco farming, (2) evaluate the level of risk in tobacco farming, and (3) examine the composition of mitigation strategy for prioritized risks in tobacco farming in Bajang Village. Respondents in this study consisted of key informants and 43 farmers using the Fishbone Diagram and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) analysis methods. According to the analysis result, there are a total of 15 risks based on five risk sources: production, price and market, finance, human resource, and institutional. Weather and climate uncertainty, price uncertainty, quality and quantity uncertainty, pest and disease attacks, and farmers' lack of insight are the top five risks. Mitigation strategies are presented in an attempt to lessen the impact of risks on tobacco farming.

Abstract

Broilers are one of the animal protein producers that experience an increase in demand every year. Based on data from the Food Security and Livestock Service Office of Pamekasan Regency in 2019, the highest broiler production in Pamekasan Regency was located in Larangan Subdistrict, however, many farmers closed their businesses. This research was conducted at Pak Rudi's broiler farm located in Pamekasan Regency with the aim of knowing the sources of risk, prioritizing risks that require the most immediate prevention, and knowing alternative control strategies. The methods used in this research are fishbone and FMEA. The results of this study indicate that there are three main sources of risk on this broiler farm including production risk, financial risk, and marketing risk. Risk prioritization lies in the source of production risk with an indicator of the risk of contracting diseases for alternative strategies used in controlling risks in the form of administering vaccines regularly to maintain the immune system of chickens and conducting examinations on chickens carefully and regularly so that if there are chickens that contract diseases, treatment can be carried out quickly and appropriately to avoid disease transmission to other chickens.

Abstract

Abstract

Mariculture is growing rapidly in response to declining capture fisheries and increasing global demand for seafood. In coastal areas like Saronggi Subdistrict, Sumenep Regency, fishermen often experience seasonal limitations in capture fisheries, which affect their income stability. As a result, many begin to consider seaweed farming as an alternative livelihood. This study aims to examine the level of fishermen's interest in seaweed farming and identify the factors that influence it. The research was conducted from August to December 2024 in Saronggi Subdistrict, Sumenep Regency, East Java Province. A total of 30 respondents were selected purposively, focusing on fishermen who were either currently engaged in or considering seaweed farming. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach using primary data collected through structured interviews. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression to determine the relationship between selected variables and fishermen’s interest in seaweed farming. Preliminary findings indicate a generally high level of interest among fishermen in seaweed farming. Several socio-economic and institutional factors, such as age, fishing experience, and access to markets, appear to be associated with this interest, suggesting potential leverage points for policy or community-based intervention. Further analysis will explore how these variables interact and what this implies for supporting livelihood transitions in coastal communities.
