Abstract

Acute diarrhea is liquid stool with a frequency of more than 3 times a day and lasts less than 14 days. One of the most common causes of acute diarrhea is Escherichia coli. Diarrhea caused by bacteria can be treated with the use of antibiotics, but the relatively high intensity of antibiotic use causes various health problems, especially bacterial resistance. Therefore, the search for antibacterial agents derived from natural ingredients was carried out as an alternative treatment. Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) is one of the natural ingredients that has the potential as an antibacterial because it contains active compounds such as essential oils, flavonoids (quercetin), saponins, tannins, and alkaloids. This study aimed to analyze the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of bay leaves on the growth of Escherichia coli. This research uses the dilution method which aims to determine the Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The results showed that the MIC value at a concentration of 200mg/ml and the MBC value at a concentration of 500mg/ml.

Abstract

Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 is an opportunistic normal flora bacteria that can cause diseases such as diarrhea and other intestinal tract diseases. Acute diarrhea is the discharge of loose/liquid stools with a frequency of more than 3 times a day or more lasting less than 14 days. Until now acute diarrheal infections are caused by Escherichia coli usually treated with antibiotics. However, it is known that there is resistance of Escherichia coli bacteria to several antibiotics such as ampicillin, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, cotrimoxazole, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin caused by controlled use of antibiotics. This study aims to analyze the sensitivity of various antibiotics to Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 bacteria in vitro. This research is an experimental study with a post-test only with control group research design and uses various antibiotics as samples. The test bacteria used in this study was Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, with the agar diffusion method (well). The diameter of the inhibition zone formed was measured using a caliper. The results of the sensitivity test of various antibiotics against Escherichia coli were found to be 5 resistants, namely sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim 1.25µg (8,90mm), cefotaxime 30µg (12,26mm), cefixime 30µg (5,20mm), ceftriaxone 30µg (10,66mm), chloramphenicol 30µg (8,80mm), 3 intermediates namely ampicillin 10µg (16,00mm), gentamicin 10µg (13,55mm), erythromycin 15µg (17,53mm), and 2 sensitives, namely tetracycline 30µg (25,80mm), ciprofloxacin 5µg (23,31mm).

Abstract

Menstrual pain, or dysmenorrhea, is a common complaint frequently experienced by adolescent girls, characterized by lower abdominal pain that occurs before or during menstruation. This pain is generally caused by uterine muscle contractions due to the release of prostaglandins. This condition can affect quality of life, disrupt daily activities, and reduce concentration in school. Self-exercise is a non-pharmacological method that can be performed independently, offering benefits such as improving blood circulation and relieving muscle tension. This community service activity aimed to provide self-exercise training to reduce menstrual pain at Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 6 Pekanbaru, attended by 30 students. During the activity, questionnaires were used to collect data regarding the participants' experiences with menstrual pain and their usual pain management methods. Pretests and post-tests were conducted to measure changes in participants' understanding of menstrual pain and its management. Self-exercise guide brochures were distributed to support home practice. The results showed a significant increase in participants' understanding of menstrual pain management after the training. Before the education was provided, 6 participants (20%) had good knowledge, while 24 participants (80%) were in the moderate category. Abstract

The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance highlights the need for alternative antibacterial agents, particularly against Gram-positive pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Pineapple peel (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.), an agricultural by-product, contains bioactive compounds with reported antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to formulate ethanol extract of pineapple peel into a liquid soap and evaluate its physicochemical properties and antibacterial effectiveness. The extract was incorporated at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. Physicochemical evaluations included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, free alkali content, and specific gravity. Antibacterial activity was determined using the agar well diffusion method against S. aureus and S. pyogenes. All formulations met general quality requirements for liquid soap preparations, with pH values ranging from 7.3 to 9.7, specific gravity between 1.01 and 1.04g/mL, and free alkali content ≤0.1%. Antibacterial testing demonstrated a concentration-dependent increase in inhibition zone diameter. The 15% formulation exhibited the highest activity, producing inhibition zones of 13.30mm against S. aureus and 20.25mm against S. pyogenes, with statistically significant differences compared to lower concentrations (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that pineapple peel extract can be successfully incorporated into a stable liquid soap formulation while retaining its antibacterial activity. The 15% formulation shows promising potential as a natural-based antibacterial cleansing product.
