Abstract

Sistem pengelolaan sampah di tempat pembuangan sampah menjadi masalah lingkungan yang besar seiring dengan pertumbuhan industri pulp dan kertas di Indonesia. Konversi limbah padat menjadi bahan bakar pelengkap untuk industri kertas juga tidak memberikan hasil yang signifikan untuk memecahkan masalah pencemaran udara pada saat karbon aktif dibebaskan dari proses pembakaran. Masalah ini secara khusus menuntut sistem pengelolaan sampah yang maju dan efektif secara terus-menerus. Baru-baru ini, optimasi pemanfaatan serat-limbah menjadi alternatif khusus untuk mengurangi tumpukan sampah di tempat pembuangan sampah. Namun, tidak semua dapat didaur ulang. Karakteristik limbah padat berserat dari industri kertas tisu cenderung menurun gramaturnya, sehingga sangat disayangkan pemanfaatannya akan berkurang bahkan setelah proses daur ulang. Di sisi lain, struktur kimianya yang telah rusak selama proses produksi tampaknya menjadi semangat baru bagi industri tekstil di masa depan dalam mengembangkan teknologi daur ulang limbah padat berserat, yang menghasilkan benang tekstil generasi baru. Fokus dalam penelitian ini ditekankan pada penemuan tas yang terbuat dari bahan serat-limbah menggunakan metode eksperimental. Identifikasi karakteristik serat-sampah berbasis padat dikembangkan melalui teknik eksplorasi multi-ply yarns berdasarkan sistem interlace. Hubungan antara penciptaan produk dan forecasting  tren pada tahun 2013 akan menjadi analisis berikutnya sebagai salah satu cara untuk memecahkan masalah sampah.Kata Kunci: limbah; multi-ply yarns; sistem interlacing.The Potential of Solid Waste as Multiply Yarn Based on Interlacing SystemsSolid-waste disposal in landfills is becoming a massive environmental problem as a result of the growth of the pulp and paper industry in Indonesia. The conversion of solid waste to complementary fuel for the paper industry is also not giving any significant results to solve air contamination, as active carbon is released into the atmosphere by the burning process. This particular problem demands an advanced and effective continuous waste management system. Recently, optimized waste-fiber utilization has come forward as a promising alternative to reduce the waste pile in landfills. However, not all of it can be recycled. Fibered solid waste from the tissue-paper industry tends to decrease its grammage, which unfortunately will eventually reduce its utilization after recycling. On the other hand, its chemical structure, which has already been damaged during the production process, appears to be giving inspiration for a future textile industry based on the development of fibered solid-waste recycling technology, resulting in a new generation of textile yarns. In this research, the focus is on the invention of a handbag made from fiber-waste material using experimental methods. Solid-based fiber waste characteristics identification was developed through a multi-ply yarn exploration technique based on an interlacing system. The relationship between product creation and the trend forecasting for 2013 will be our next goal as one way of solving Indonesia's waste problem.Keywords: interlacing system; multi-ply yarns; waste.

Abstract

Dalam dunia yang dihuni oleh mayoritas orang-orang non-kidal, orang-orang kidal terkenal dengan kemampuan beradaptasi terhadap barang-barang yang diperuntukkan bagi orang non kidal, seperti salah satunya kursi kuliah. Sedikitnya penelitian yang pernah dilakukan, memicu pada penelitian yang lebih jauh tentang kemampuan adaptasi populasi orang kidal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasikan perilaku orang kidal terutama mengenai produktivitas, kemampuan adaptasi, orientasi gerak, dan tingkat kenyamanan selama mengerjakan tugas menulis dan menggambar. Dilakukan observasi visual untuk memperhatikan gerakan tertentu pada setiap tugas yang dilakukan di atas meja tulis biasa dan kursi kuliah. Penelitian dilakukan pada 14 responden, yang terdiri dari 7 responden kidal dan 7 responden non kidal. Semua responden merupakan mahasiswa aktif Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain ITB. Data yang terekam oleh video dianalisis dengan menggunakan perangkat lunak Image J dengan pemisahan data video tersebut ke dalam beberapa bingkai (frame). Selain itu, responden juga diberikan kuesioner dengan menggunakan metode Visual Analog Scale (Semantic Differential) sebagai verifikasi dari data yang diperoleh dari observasi visual. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kemampuan adaptasi orang kidal secara signifikan lebih tinggi daripada kemampuan adaptasi orang non-kidal dalam kasus perubahan situasi kerja. Hasil dari penelitian ini dirumuskan sebagai referensi pengembangan desain dari perangkat kerja bagi orang kidal agar sesuai dengan ketentuan desain universal.Kata kunci: adaptasi; kidal; menulis; menggambar.In the world of right handed person (RHP) life, left handed person (LHP) is known to show their ability in adapting right handed-purpose goods such as table top chair in the classroom. The less number of researches lead this study to investigate in-depth about the adaptability of LHP population. This study aims to identify LHPs behavior according to their productivity, adaptability, movement orientation and comfort level during conducting writing and drawing tasks. Visual observation is conducted to determine the typical movement during the tasks that done on the common table and table-top chair. 14 subjects were employed in this experiment that consist 7 LHP and 7 RHP. All subjects are students of Faculty of Arts and Design. Data recorded from video is analyzed by ImageJ software by splitting video data into images frame. To verify data gained from visual observation, visual analog scale method (Semantic Differential) was used to clarify all responds from subjects. The results of experiments showed that the level of LHP adaptability significantly higher than RHP in term of workstation changes. The result of this study is formulated to contribute the design improvement of workstation for LHP regarding universal design issues.Keywords: adaptation; left handers; writing activity; drawing activity.

Abstract

Currently motored vehicle has become a necessity for most urban people because the demands of high mobility are performing in their daily activities. Geographical conditions, cultural distinctiveness, economic and lifestyle differences also influence the behavior of its people. Indonesia is a country with a high rate of car sales for multipurpose vehicle (MPV). With this phenomenon, criteria for the Indonesian people about MPV car, with both design aspects and also engineering aspects are no longer controlled by the principal industry in Japan, but should further reflect the desires of consumers in Indonesia. This becomes the basis of the considerations in choosing which vehicle they want to buy. The goal of this research is to identify the factors that influence the occurrence of the difference between consumer choices with a design that has been offered by the manufactures. This study was conducted to prove the hypothesis that car design using ideal values from Japanese country as the main producer of cars in some cases do not have high hopes of being accepted by the Indonesian market, considering several values and cultural differences between ideal values of Japanese car manufactures and conditions of Indonesian people, which resulted in differences of perceptions, between the ideal concept of car design of urban people in Indonesia and the concept that manufactures has offered.

Abstract

Between the 1970s and the 1990s, the Indonesian economy has been transforming from an agriculture-based to an industry-based economy. According to this condition, Cirebon growth rapidly to export rattan goods even this city has no resources in rattan. The lack of design quality, export regulation and global economic crisis become the main factor to affect the decrease of company’s income at recent. Despite the crisis, government is now trying to recover by inviting design expert to improve design skills and capacity building of entrepreneurs in particular small-medium scale enterprises. This study aims to define why Cirebon still lags behind in industrial competitiveness regarding rattan furniture design. The intervention program of design is conducted to seek out the craftsman’s ability and determined the kind of design competitiveness advantages according their nature of business.

Abstract

This study consisted of a perception evaluation and identification of scooter shapes that are attractive to female riders. A survey using a Likert scale was conducted on 150 female scooter riders, providing an evaluation of six different scooter shapes representing scooter designs in Indonesia. The result of the descriptive analysis showed that scooter designs in Indonesia are perceived as high-quality, comfortable to ride, able to be used by family members, fun to ride, relaxing, and giving self-confidence when they are ridden, all of which are physio-, socio- and psycho-pleasure factors, thus only achieving the visceral and behavioral phases. These perceptions are in accordance with the female gender (communal, high emotion and empathy). The scooter models considered to be attractive to female riders had perceptions related to the ideo-pleasure factor determined by shape details in the scooter design. The results of factor analysis showed a different composition of perception factors among scooter models. The conclusion of this study is that in addition to size, type and shape characteristics, designs, both the overall design and design details as well as gender characteristics influence the difference in visual perception by female riders toward scooter designs.

Abstract

AbstrakKayu merupakan material yang banyak dimanfaatkan di Indonesia, salah satunya adalah untuk furnitur. Perubahan kondisi ekonomi hingga abad ke-21, kemudian meningkatnya kebutuhan furnitur baik dari luar dan dalam negeri, dan perkembangan ilmu desain di Indonesia, secara tidak langsung berhubungan dengan permasalahan ekologi. Ketersediaan sumber daya alam seperti kayu, semakin berkurang walaupun kebutuhannya semakin tinggi. Hingga kini kondisi tersebut mendorong industri furnitur di Indonesia untuk menggunakan alternatif berbagai macam kayu solid, kayu olahan hingga kayu limbah. Selain karena faktor keterbatasan persediaan kayu, aspek sosial dan budaya juga turut mempengaruhi kemunculan berbagai jenis alternatif kayu tersebut. Dari waktu ke waktu, perubahan kondisi sosial, ekonomi, dan gaya hidup, turut berperan pada kemunculan bentuk-bentuk furnitur baru di Indonesia. Pada penelitian ini, transisi kebutuhan material kayu pada furnitur akan dikaitkan dengan dinamika sosial budaya yang terjadi dari abad ke-18 hingga abad ke-21 di Indonesia. Transisi akan dilihat berdasarkan perubahan teori Material Cultural Studies, yang kemudian akan menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa sebuah material memiliki pengaruh besar terhadap karakter desain furnitur di Indonesia.Kata kunci: transisi, furnitur, kayu, Indonesia, ekologiAbstractWood is a material that is widely used in Indonesia, particularly for furniture. The impact of Indonesia economic development in 21st century, then the increasing needs of furniture both from outside and within the country, and the development of design in Indonesia, are directly related to ecological problems.The high demand for wood can reduce timber supply.Until now, these conditions encourage the furniture industry in Indonesia to use alternate various kinds of solid wood, wood processing and wood waste.Wood has a role in the dynamic cultural development of Java, both from the aspect of spiritual, philosophical, aesthetic and economic.The role can be assessed through one of the symbols of culture, namely furniture products. This study aims to describe the shift in social and cultural values that occurred on the island of Java, in particular the use of wood materials.The development of wood utilization will be explained based on the changing needs of the community, through Material Cultural Studies viewpoint. By looking at the changes in technological trends, social conditions and public taste, will be known tendency of any type of wood used today. Abstract

Product Sound design has been an integral part for many renown company in designing product, due to its big contribution in shaping the user's experience (Langeveld, van Egmond, Reinier; dan Özcan (2013)). According to what cause the sound, consequential product sound is the product sound that happens because of the product's internal mechanical interaction, and the charachters are dependent on the material, size, and mechanism. However, there are stillvery few people who develop and apply these principles for products made of natural material, such as wood. Whereas, by understanding the product sound produced by the wooden product, there could be a unique user experience, that in turn, will increase the product's economical value. That's why, we try to identifies the percieved product sound that may be produced on a rubber band powered mechanical toy car made of plywood as a pilot research in defining the product sound charachter of wooden toy made fromplywood. In the next research, some sound charachter concluded in this paper could be a reference and a starting point in determining the desired product sound outcu\ome. The sound identification was done on 4 test product with different mechanism, yet same basic looks. The identification include the physical sound charachter (difference in intensity, frequency, and waveform) and the perceived sound charachter (using semantic diferential). The unique perceived sound charachter found are then connected to the physical sound charachter as a general conclusion. Abstract

This study is an evaluation of perception and identification of attractive scooter design by female motorcycle riders. Survey with questionaire using Likert scale was conducted on 150 female scooter riders who provided assesment of six scooter design representing design of scooter in Indonesia. Descriptive analysis results show that scooter designs in Indonesia have perception: quality, comfortable to use, can be used by all family members, fun to use, relax and easy, and give confidence, which included in physio, socio, and psycho-pleasure also only reached the visceral and behavioral stage.Female riders’ perception is inline with the female gender characteristics, communal and have high empathy or emotional skill. Attractive scooter design for female riders has ideo-pleasure related perception and is determined from the details of the product design. From the factor analysis, it is described the pleasurability factors has different perception for each design. Conclusion of this study is beside size, type, and design characters, total shape as well as the details of the shape from the scooter design are the things that will affect the perception of the female rider and may provide a different perception of pleasurability evaluation from the female riders.

Abstract

Eceng gondok merupakan tumbuhan air yang sangat sulit diberantas. Hal ini disebabkan pertumbuhan eceng gondokyang sangat cepat dan daya tahan hidupnya tinggi. Selain itu eceng gondok dapat menyebabkan berkurangnya debitair permukaan air terbuka (seperti danau, rawa, sungai atau daerah berair lainnya) hingga 4 kali lipat dan dapatmenyebabkan pendangkalan pada daerah-daerah berair tersebut. Pemanfaatan eceng gondok dalam penelitian iniditujukan untuk menghasilkan tekstil dari enceng gondok bertekstur tiga dimensi.Perancangan busana wanita menggunakan eceng gondok yang menghasilkan tekstil tekstur tiga dimensi inimenggunakan pendekatan eksplorasi material dengan cara teknik anyam keper dan sistem pewarnaan alam berbahankayu secang (Caesalpinia sappan). Gagasan dari penelitian ini adalah menggali potensi eceng gondok yang sangatberlimpah tersebut agar dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai media pembelajaran/kursus bagi mahasiswa desain tingkat dasardan oleh masyarakat awam yang bekerja di bidang industri tekstil di Indonesia.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah masyarakat awam pemilik industri tekstil dapat menciptakan rancangan busanacouture wanita menggunakan tekstil dari serat alam eceng gondok yang bertekstur tiga dimensi, sehingga dapattampil dengan daya tarik visual yang tinggi dan bernilai tambah. Hasil dari penelitian ini diharapkan menjadi modelpembelajaran bagi industri tekstil kecil dan menengah untuk dapat menghasilkan produk busana/fashion yang unikdengan kualitas tinggi. Penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat menjadi salah satu media pembelajaran dasar desainuntuk masyarakat luas maupun mahasiswa desain tingkat dasar. AbstractWater hyacinth is a water plant that difficult to eradicate. This happen because the growth of water hyacinth is fastand shown its high durability. In addition, it affects to reduce open air surface discharge (such as lakes, swamps,rivers or other watery areas) up to 4 times and siltation effect in these aqueous areas. The use of water hyacinth inthis study was to produce three-dimensional texture of nature textile.The design of women's clothing uses water hyacinth which produces three-dimensional texture textiles uses thematerials exploration approach by applying the keper weaving technique and the sappan wood natural coloringsystem (Caesalpinia sappan). The idea of this research is exploring the potential of the abundant water hyacinth inorder to be used as a learning medium / course for elementary level design students and for the empowerment oftextile industris in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is that ordinary people who own the textile industris can create design women's coutureclothing using tree-dimentional textiles from natural hyacinth fiber, so that they could appear with high visualappeal and added value. The results of this study are expected to be a learning model for the small and mediumtextile industris to produce unique high quality fashion products. This research is also expected to be one of the basiclearning media designs for the wider community as well as basic level design students.

Abstract

Rumah batik Oey Soe Tjoen adalah salah satu workshopbatik tulis tradisional Nusantara yang mempertahankan orisinalitas dalam menghasilkan kain batik secara turun temurun. Proses produksi kain batik dengan canting memegang peranan penting dalam rumah batik Oey Soe Tjoen.  Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk meninjau kedudukan proses pembuatan kain batik dengan canting pada usaha batik tulis tradisional, baik dalam lingkup proses kerja maupun dalam lingkup tatanan ruang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan etnografi melalui studi literatur, observasi dan wawancara langsung kepada nara sumber. Data dipaparkan secara deskriptif dan dianalisis sehingga menghasilkan temuan bahwa, proses produksi kain batik dengan canting adalah sebuah proses yang signifikan dalam menghasilkan batik tulis secara tradisional. Sehingga ruang yang mewadahi proses ini menjadi ruang penting dalam tata ruang sebuah workshop batik tulis tradisional yang perlu dipertimbangkan guna mendukung kelancaran produktivitas kerja. Kata kunci: batik tulis, canting, hirarki, Oey Soe Tjoen, workstation
