Abstract

The extension of private land ownership into marine territories in Sumba has generated socio-economic tensions by restricting traditional fishing grounds and undermining communal access to coastal resources; yet, scholarly attention to its cultural and digital implications remains limited. This study aims to examine how such privatization affects the livelihoods and cultural identity of coastal communities in the context of globalization and algorithmic power. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach combined with digital discourse analysis, the research investigates community narratives, policy documents, and representations across social media platforms. The findings reveal that privatization disrupts indigenous systems of reciprocity, compels local communities to renegotiate their cultural identity, and exposes them to global economic models that privilege individual ownership. Moreover, algorithmic amplification in digital media tends to marginalize indigenous voices while reinforcing dominant narratives aligned with commercial interests. The study concludes that marine privatization in Sumba not only reshapes socio-cultural relations but also illustrates how globalization and algorithmic systems jointly reconfigure cultural identity and resource legitimacy in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the use of ChatGPT as a conversational partner to support speaking practice among first-semester EFL students in a blended learning setting. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through classroom observations, reflective responses, and informal interviews with sixty-five English Literature students. The findings show that AI-supported rehearsal mainly influenced students’ emotional readiness and willingness to participate rather than immediate linguistic improvement. Many learners used ChatGPT to practise privately, organise their ideas, and prepare for classroom interaction, which reduced the fear of judgement and encouraged more active participation. At the same time, students recognised that AI could not replace authentic peer communication, particularly during spontaneous discussions. The study suggests that conversational AI functions most effectively as a preparatory space that complements classroom speaking activities. These results contribute to ongoing discussions about the role of AI in EFL speaking development by highlighting how private rehearsal and collaborative interaction can work together to support early-stage university learners.

Abstract

Globalization and modernization have brought significant changes to the way communities understand and preserve their cultural identities. In this context, literature plays a vital role as a medium capable of both representing and passing on cultural values to future generations. The Toba Batak community possesses a wealth of cultural values reflected in its kinship system, respect for tradition, social solidarity, and the role of women in family and community life. The anthology Palito Ni Si Boru Toba is a literary work that highlights the life experiences of Batak Toba women and represents various cultural values that remain alive in the community. Although previous research has addressed issues of women and patriarchy in this anthology, studies on its role as a medium for the transmission of cultural identity remain limited. This study aims to describe the forms of Batak Toba cultural identity transmission represented in the Palito Ni Si Boru Toba anthology. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis to examine the narratives, dialogues, and cultural depictions found in the texts. The data were analyzed from a cultural studies perspective to identify the cultural values passed down through literary works. The results of the study indicate that this anthology represents the cultural values of the Batak Toba people, such as respect for tradition, the importance of kinship ties, the value of boru ni raja, family responsibility, and awareness of ethnic identity. Through these representations, literature functions as a vehicle for cultural transmission that helps preserve Batak Toba identity amidst social change. These findings confirm that literature serves not only as a medium for artistic expression but also as a vital instrument in the sustainable transmission of cultural identity.

One example of this is the strong urge and motivation to advocate for women's rights in society, particularly in the position of leadership, within the realm of music. In addition, this movie presents other issues, including social, cultural, and political challenges that are primarily connected to Antonia Brico's personal battle. Conclusion. Brico shows her intellectual ability by studying with renowned musicians and conductors, even studying abroad, to gain knowledge and achieve her goals. She also demonstrates the courage to self-actualize, which is shown by her efforts to challenge perspectives that undermine women, such as the belief that women cannot lead and must hold positions below men. Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed cultural communication and identity construction among younger generations in Indonesia. Batak Toba youth increasingly engage with social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to access, share, and reinterpret the cultural values of Dalihan Na Tolu in contemporary digital spaces. Previous studies mainly discuss Dalihan Na Tolu from philosophical and traditional cultural perspectives, while limited research examines its digital representation among Batak Toba youth. This study analyzes how Batak Toba youth represent and preserve Dalihan Na Tolu through digital media in the digital era. The findings show that digital media has a dual impact on cultural preservation. Globalization and modern lifestyles reduce youth participation in traditional ceremonies and weaken the use of Batak language; however, social media also functions as a platform for cultural learning, identity reconstruction, and cultural dissemination. Batak Toba youth actively preserve cultural values by sharing digital content related to Batak traditions, music, language, and customary practices. This study highlights the relationship between youth digital participation and the reconstruction of Dalihan Na Tolu within contemporary digital culture. Digital platforms can function as strategic media for sustaining local cultural identity among younger generations through adaptive and participatory cultural practices.
