Abstract

Abstract: Grammar is one of the most important elements of the English language. There is not a single word in English that does not involve grammar. In fact, a lot of English proficiency tests use grammar as one of the parts. Mastering grammar is as easy as mastering writing and speaking. This makes grammar has a big contribution in mastering English. The purpose of this research is to improve English Grammar skills through the implementation of a grammar game application in English classes in the digital era. This application contains grammar exercises and interactive training games and is very contemporary. The approach used in this study is a quantitative experimental method, employing a pretest-posttest control group design. The study involved two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The data analysis process is divided into two stages. The first stage involves analyzing the pretest and posttest data, while the second stage focuses on analyzing data from the questionnaire on the application's use. For the pretest and posttest data, a t-test is applied. Specifically, an independent t-test, which is a type of parametric test, is used to compare two independent groups. The analysis is based on two criteria: (1) if the significance value (2-tailed) is greater than 0.05, it indicates no significant difference between the groups; (2) if the significance value (2-tailed) is less than 0.05, it indicates a significant difference. The comparison of pretest and posttest scores between the experimental and control groups serves to address the research question about the effectiveness of the English Grammar Practice application in enhancing grammar skills. The results suggest that the application has a positive impact. Although the experimental group initially scored lower on the pretest than the control group, the posttest results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group, demonstrating the effectiveness of the application in improving grammar proficiency.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the novel The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry through intrinsic and extrinsic elements. This article analyzes qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. This study focuses on four aspects: theme analysis, character analysis, plot and setting analysis, and extrinsic context including the author's historical background. From the results of the analysis, 4 elements were found: (1) prominent themes in the novel The Little Prince, such as loneliness, friendship, love, and the serch for meaning; (2) the development and nature of his unique character; (3) The author's reflection on his life, especially when he was a pilot and faced the harshness of war, greatly influenced the depth of meaning and symbols scattered throughout his narrative; and (4) moral and existential messages conveyed through the story. Through contemplative reading, the researcher found that the harmony between the intrinsic elements and the author's life background created layers of emotion and messages that transcended cultural boundaries. This study proves that qualitative literary analysis is not only a tool to appreciate the beauty of language, but also a window to understand the human values that live in it.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental literacy skill that determines students’ academic success and readiness for the workforce. However, Indonesian students’ low performance in international assessments highlights the urgency of addressing reading literacy, particularly at the vocational high school level where learners are preparing for internships and direct entry into employment. This study examines the influence of verbal-linguistic intelligence and teacher competence, within the framework of the Understanding by Design (UbD) approach, on students’ reading comprehension, with learning motivation considered as a mediating variable. A quantitative research design was applied, involving 104 students from a Vocational High School (Phase F), selected using Slovin’s formula and simple random sampling. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with the Partial Least Squares method. The findings demonstrate that both verbal-linguistic intelligence and teacher competence have a significant positive effect on learning motivation. These factors also showed a positive influence on reading comprehension, although their direct influence had weak significance. Importantly, learning motivation is confirmed as a strong mediator, strengthening the impact of teacher competence and verbal-linguistic intelligence on reading comprehension. This study underscores the importance of fostering students’ linguistic capacity and enhancing teacher competence through the UbD approach, as these efforts are more effective when supported by high learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the phonological aspects of English pronunciation mastery among eighth-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Pringsewu. The research focuses on students ability to pronounce English sounds, including vowels and consonants, word stress, and sentence intonation, as well as identifying dominant phonological errors and the factors influencing them. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in this study. The research subjects consisted of 20 eighth-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observation, a pronunciation test, and interviews. The findings reveal that students are generally able to pronounce basic English sounds, particularly those similar to Indonesian phonological features. However, difficulties were still observed in pronouncing specific English sounds such as the interdental sounds /?/ and //, the fricative /?/, distinctions between long and short vowels, as well as in applying appropriate word stress and intonation. The main phonological errors include sound substitution, incorrect stress placement, and flat intonation patterns. These difficulties are influenced by first-language interference, limited pronunciation practice, and minimal exposure to authentic English pronunciation. The study concludes that although students have acquired a basic level of phonological competence, their mastery remains moderate and needs further development. Therefore, more structured and continuous pronunciation practice is vital to improve students phonological awareness and speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of English pronunciation errors made by Nursing students and to identify the factors contributing to these errors in the context of English for Nursing instruction. A qualitative descriptive research design was employed, involving 18 fourth-semester Nursing students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Pringsewu, Indonesia, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a pronunciation test consisting of medical and nursing-related terminology and semi-structured interviews. All pronunciation performances were audio-recorded and analyzed phonologically, while interview data were examined thematically. The findings revealed that Nursing students experienced systematic pronunciation errors, particularly related to silent letters, consonant clusters, vowel reduction, and incorrect word stress in multisyllabic medical terms. Errors were predominantly influenced by first-language phonological interference, limited exposure to spoken medical English, and instructional practices that emphasized reading comprehension rather than oral and pronunciation-focused activities. These pronunciation difficulties have the potential to affect intelligibility and professional communication in clinical settings. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for pronunciation-focused instruction that is contextualized within authentic clinical communication. It is recommended that English for Nursing courses integrate more listening activities, clinical simulations, and explicit pronunciation training. Future research is suggested to involve larger samples and to examine the effectiveness of instructional interventions designed to improve pronunciation accuracy and clinical communication skills among Nursing students.
