Abstract

The purpose of this study is to prove that stereotypes about women are gentle and protective, and irrational because they are only suitable in the domestic sector and are not worthy of being driving actors in the field of philanthropy. However, these stereotypes do not always have a negative impact, but under certain conditions they actually raise concern for vulnerable groups in the era covid-19 pandemic. This can be proven in the women's movement, the community of Kartini UIN SUKA, a community engaged in education and the Fetus and womb community which is engaged in mental health by direct interviews and using content analysis on the Fetus and Womb community Instragram which is strengthened, supported by observations and data from journals and websites. This study concludes that, during the Covid-19 pandemic, with limited space and movement due to the WFH policy, women formed a community engaged in philanthropy as a form of concern for others affected by Covid-19. Providing assistance to students in the form of groceries and educating women on mental health through virtual space is a movement that is urgently needed during the Covid-19 pandemic. This movement is not only beneficial to recipients but is also able to provide a stimulus to other groups to be motivated to foster a diverse attitude towards others even in limited circumstances. The act of driving philanthropy as well as being an actor of change is a way to break through patriarchal culture.

Abstract

The current study examined the challenges of women living under Lampung’s highly stringent customary law pertaining to the acquisition of home ownership rights in 3 villages in Hulu Sungkai, North Lampung, Indonesia. In Lampung customary law, the home is conferred to the male descendant. This study employed the constructivist perspective and used data collected from field observations, interviews, document analyses, and literature reviews to address the practices of traditional power among Lampung women. The research results indicate that the construct of customary law has positioned women and men differently, subsequently leading to unequal treatment of women in the family. Patriarchy’s dominance in Lampung customary law has made life more difficult for women, who are already responsible for housekeeping and enriching education. Still, customary practices provide them no opportunity of any kind, and this has negative consequences. Women are highly dependent on men, and women frequently become victims of domestic violence. The construct of Lampung customs has established how women are treated in society. Lampung’s customary construct needs to be counterbalanced by a better public understanding of property ownership laws so that people have more gender awareness regarding home ownership.

Abstract

The case of a state official required a Deaf person to answer questions submitted to a Deaf person on World Disabilities Day in 2021 by using spoken language and refusing to use sign language because it was considered that the disabled have the same abilities as the non- disabled group. The perception of these state officials is a representation of the Indonesian population in understanding disabilities. The purpose of this research is to prove that Indonesia already has a policy to align the life positions of disabled people with non-disabled people, but these policies do not reach the community level, so that people are not friendly to people with disabilities. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by analyzing interview data and indirect observation, as well as combining secondary data obtained from previous research, the website found that facilities in the form of infrastructure were uneven and low sign language skills for non-disabled groups led to a lack of knowledge about the existence of disabilities. The result of this study shows that the disabled group cannot adapt to their own environment so that the existence of disabilities is not widely known by the public. The lack of knowledge about people with disabilities causes people to think that disabled groups are the same as non-disabled groups. Such perception is then considered by the people of Indonesia to be unfriendly to persons with disabilities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe rationality of the people who live in the eruptionprone areas of Mount Merapi and who refuse to be relocated. A qualitative research method with interpretative phenomenological analysis is used in this research. Informants are selected by snowball sampling technique. The location of research is in Pangukrejo village which is a village in the southern slopes of Merapi. The results show that people think Merapi as a place of origin where they obtain senses of comfort and safety. Merapi is also a place where they acquire and preserve community value system. Merapi is a symbol of their dignity that must be maintained. In this relation, eruption is interpreted as destiny, eruption is interpreted as destiny of God that can not be circumvented. At that time, their living conditions were on the bottom and could be overcome by means of mutual cooperation to return to normal condition. The value rationality motivate them to resettle in their homes after the great eruption of Merapi.

Abstract

Traditional practices are one of the factors that cause gender inequality because they consider women to be inferior to the superiority of men. The purpose of this study is to reveal the customary practices of Lampung which then cause gender inequality to be hereditary by focusing on the term mikhrul. By using qualitative research data was collected through interviews with traditional leaders, religious and community leaders. In addition, indirect observation was used to strengthen data that was not disclosed at the time of the interview. Secondary data obtained from journals and books. By using descriptive analysis, the findings of this study are: mikhrul is a customary term that is socialized to girls from a young age which means that girls are daughter-in-law while boys are biological children. Consequence, girls do not have access, participation, and control in the family, because the role of girls is temporary, namely before marriage. Therefore, daughters are only custodians of family assets. Meanwhile, sons have a substitute role for their parents, are responsible for family members who are not yet independent, and have responsibilities for their wives, so that sons have power over all parental assets. Abstract

The practice of “Ngeloop” (bathing and soaking in seawater) when welcoming Ramadan fasting is a tradition of the South Lampung ethnic group. But in practice, this tradition is not only carried out by the South Lampung ethnic group, but also other ethnic groups that are Muslim. This research aims to determine the actions of Muslims in Lampung in carrying out the local tradition of “Ngeloop Haga Puasa”. This research was a descriptive qualitative research with interview and observation methods. The informants were selected using the purposive sampling and snowball sampling technique. The location of the research was conducted in Kalianda, South Lampung District, Lampung Province, Indonesia. The results of the research concluded that the religious value which obliges Muslims to practice fasting has been internalized which is expressed in the form of the practice of ngeloop. Expression in the form of local cultural practices is a strengthening of Muslim identity in South Lampung.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has erased the stereotype of the domestication of women with the status of women as housewives and career women, which has an impact on women’s double burden, namely doing domestic work and public work. This article aims to prove that the domestic sector has strengthened the existence of women. This research is descriptive qualitative by interviewing three career women in Yogyakarta. They were selected by direct pointing because these women can provide relevant information in this study. Indirect observations were carried out to explore information that was not conveyed at the time of the interview. Information from journals, websites, and newspapers was used to strengthen the data. The results showed that women’s ability to manage the household had an effect during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely the Work From Home (WFH) policy. Women’s domestic roles include women’s managerial abilities in utilizing home facilities such as the living room, family room, workspace, and even the kitchen room and mastery of home facilities such as Wi-Fi, laptops, and cellphones used by other family members. It also provides ample opportunity for women to demonstrate their ability to carry out domestic sector jobs such as cooking, protecting family members, and doing public work such as seminars, teaching, selling services, business, and forming social groups to help disaster victims. In line with that, the role of women in the domestic sector and public sector is balanced, thereby strengthening women’s existence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
