Abstract

Islamophobia is a concept that includes various types of discrimination against Muslims and their followers. This study explores trends in previous research on Islamophobia between 2013 and 2022, focusing on factors that contribute to Islamophobia in the media and prevalent stereotypes. A systematic literature review was conducted, involving the identification, evaluation, interpretation and analysis of relevant studies. The study found that Islamophobia in the media has gained significant attention and requires further investigation to understand current trends and develop solutions. Factors associated with Islamophobia include negative portrayal, structural bias, and a lack of understanding of Islam, which contributes to anti-Muslim sentiment. The study also identified stereotypes, such as Muslims being suspected of attacks, seen as a societal threat, labeled as "other," and women wearing headscarves being stigmatized as religious fanatics. Addressing Islamophobia in the media is crucial, and recognizing these contributing factors and stereotypes can help challenge biases and promote inclusivity in society

Abstract

Microlearning is a short-term learning strategy that can increase students' interest in learning. It is in line with the characteristics of today's students who cannot focus on learning for long periods of time. The study was conducted at three senior high schools in Bogor, Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze microlearning in writing English learning materials for the tenth grader. This research employed a content analysis approach. The data sources are learning materials from two student books from two publishers that refer to Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar as well as additional learning materials developed by teachers such as PowerPoint slides, explainer videos, and infographics. Interviews with three English teachers were also conducted. The result of the study showed that the microlearning features in each unit are not entirely satisfied, although numerous media have been found in a short amount of time, there are still certain components that have not been addressed. The study suggested that to improve students' writing English learning experiences, book writers and teachers should emphasize microlearning aspects and critical thinking skills more in learning materials.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the mechanical engineering vocational education students’ difficulties in making paraphrasing in academic writing course and to investigate the use of the online paraphrasing tools in overcoming those difficulties. The data were taken from two questionnaires distributed to the students regarding the two problems mentioned previously. The items were adapted from Paraphrasing Strategy theory by Schuemann (2006), and Kirszner (2008) which consists of four strategies: 1) changing its synonym; 2) changing part of speech; 3) changing the sentence pattern from active to passive; 4) keep using keywords from the original text. The study revealed that the most commonly used strategy was to change the synonyms with a percentage of 69%. Then, the most difficult problems in terms of content, structure, language, and paraphrase strategy are paraphrasing itself, using punctuation, identifying the part of speech, and inability to state the same information as the source text. Further research is needed in which a more significant number of participants and various academic writing difficulties should take part in, and a variety of research instruments should be employed.

Abstract

Background: Machine translation has been proved to be a favourable style to execute. However, some research evidence difficulties indicates that its focus is on students' difficulties in academic writing, not on how to overcome them by using machine translation. As a result, this research aims to determine how machine translation might be optimized to help mechanical engineering vocational education students with academic writing difficulties. Methodology: The data was collected from 27 second-semester mechanical engineering vocational education students currently enrolled in an English college course at one of the Universities in Jakarta. Questionnaires online were used to obtain the data, which was analyzed and interpreted descriptively. Questionnaire 1 is used to determine whether or not the subject utilized machine translation and, if so, what type of machine translation they used most frequently. Question 2 was split into two sections. PART A was modified from Xiao & Chen (2015), who described students' challenges with academic writing. It comprises 12 items that were delivered to 27 students via Google Form. Meanwhile, the findings of Lee (2020) have been adapted into PART B. Findings: The result of this study revealed that 27 students of mechanical engineering vocational education in one of the Universities in Jakarta encountered several academic writing difficulties such as grammar (construct grammatically correct sentences, the use of appropriate tenses), expressions (discourse markers, part of speech), and vocabulary (proper vocabulary choices and finding synonyms). Grammar problems are the most challenging, followed by vocabulary and phrases. The optimization of machine translation was also discovered to be the most effective way of overcoming vocabulary issues followed by grammar and expression. Conclusion: Academic writing issues emerge in the classroom. According to the findings, the most difficulties students encountered fell into the grammar aspect. On the other hand, the students considered that machine translation would be the most helpful in overcoming their vocabulary challenges. Although machine translation helps deal with academic writing difficulties like developing vocabulary skills, increasing knowledge of grammar rules in context, and finding more authentic expression, teachers should also guide them in writing academically. Keywords: optimizing machine translation; academic writing difficulties; grammar; vocabulary; expressions.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate learning strategies used by Junior High school to enhance English speaking skill, with a particular focus on identifying the dominant strategy. To achieve this, a descriptive qualitative method was used to examine interaction patterns within the classroom. The participants were comprised of 5 at VIII Grade Junior High School students who achieved the highest scores and willingly provided essential data to address the research questions. Data were collected through multiple sources, including transcribed interviews and observation. The results showed that 1) Students improved their accents by rehearsing and mimicking speech sounds, listening to native speakers, engaging with music, watching English flicks, consulting Google Translate, reading English books, singing English songs, swapping written notes, as well as requesting for opportunities to converse with teacher and peers in English. 2) Students frequently asked for guidance from peers on proper sentence construction, practiced speaking regularly, learnt from English movies, and occasionally referenced a dictionary. These observations suggested a dominant use of cognitive learning strategy, characterized by repetition, summarization, and contextual imagery, and driven by students’ personal preferences or available resources. Meanwhile, Socio-Affective strategy, including interaction with others to aid in learning, ranked second, as students actively collaborated with peers. This research could potentially assist teacher in enhancing student speaking skill by gaining insight into learning behaviors and preferences, facilitating the selection of appropriate teaching strategies.
