Abstract

The effective and efficient use of biomass briquettes is strongly influenced by the type of stove used and the way it is used. This study aims to design a briquette stove by adding an adjuster: the test fuel used honeycomb briquettes and forest fern charcoal. The heat transfer from burning honeycomb briquettes to a pot of water needs to be maintained so that the heat (temperature) remains constant during the combustion process. In the current use of briquettes, the distance between the briquette flame and the pot of water is unstable because the space is getting further away from the pool of cooking water. The combustion distance is getting farther because the bottom of the initial honeycomb briquettes burns out, causing the surface of the briquettes to decrease and move away from the surface of the water pot. Thus the heat given to the pool of water will reduce. The briquette stove needs to be added with an adjuster to overcome this problem. This adjuster serves to raise the honeycomb briquettes if the surface of the briquettes decreases. With the addition of an adjuster, it will be analyzed how much the heat transfer rate and the stability of the burning distance of the honeycomb briquettes will be. In this study, 2 test models will be used: a stove with an adjuster and a stove without an adjuster, using 14 holes in honeycomb briquettes made from forest ferns using starch (tapioca) adhesive. The distance between the surface of the briquettes and the pot of boiled water is 5 cm. The results showed that the briquette stove using an adjuster could maintain the stability of the combustion distance between the surface of the briquette and the pot of water being cooked with an average temperature t = 567.83 0C and conduction heat transfer q = 5285.699 Watt.

Abstract

Tujuan utama dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilaksanakan di Kampung Abar, Distrik Ebungfauw, Kabupaten Jayapura, adalah memberikan pelatihan kepada masyarakat—khususnya kelompok pengrajin gerabah—dalam pembuatan kompor briket berbahan dasar tanah liat (tanah lempung). Kampung Abar dikenal sebagai sentra kerajinan gerabah yang telah diwariskan secara turun-temurun. Para pengrajin lokal mampu menghasilkan berbagai bentuk gerabah sesuai kebutuhan dan pesanan konsumen. Pengabdian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh kelompok usaha briket “Yabahey” di Kampung Nolokla, yang mengalami keterbatasan dalam penyediaan kompor briket sebagai sarana pendukung produksi briket. Untuk menjawab tantangan tersebut, tim PKM dari USTJ hadir di Kampung Abar untuk menawarkan solusi melalui pelatihan pembuatan kompor briket dari tanah liat. Metode yang digunakan meliputi sosialisasi, pengambilan dan pengolahan tanah liat, penyaringan, pembentukan kompor, hingga proses pembakaran untuk menghasilkan produk yang kuat dan tahan lama. Kegiatan ini berhasil dilaksanakan dengan dukungan penuh dari aparat kampung, gereja, dan masyarakat. Lima kelompok pengrajin—Roliyauw, Hunuyo, Yauw Enggo, Titian Hidup, dan Holinarei—berhasil membuat dua jenis kompor: model sarang lebah dan kotak. Hasil dari kegiatan ini tidak hanya meningkatkan keterampilan teknis masyarakat, tetapi juga mengoptimalkan pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal, mendorong kemandirian teknologi, serta membuka peluang peningkatan ekonomi melalui penerapan teknologi tepat guna yang berpijak pada kearifan lokal.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of hydraulic pressure variation on the thermal characteristics of briquettes made from areca palm stem waste (Areca catechu), particularly in terms of material density, heat conduction rate, and calorific value. The briquettes were molded in a box shape using pressures of 60, 80, and 100 kg/cm². The test results show that increasing the pressing pressure is directly proportional to the increase in the heat conduction rate (q), which were 0.2635 W, 0.2772 W, and 0.2867 W, respectively. In parallel, the calorific value also increased from 5124 kcal/kg to 5245 kcal/kg. This is due to increased density and reduced porosity of the material under high pressure, which strengthens interparticle bonding and enhances heat transfer paths. The analysis indicates a trend of diminishing thermal performance gains at the highest pressure level, suggesting a saturation point in material compaction. The study concludes that a pressing pressure of 100 kg/cm² yields optimal thermal results and improves the combustion quality and energy efficiency of areca palm briquettes. These findings contribute to the utilization of local biomass as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative energy source.
