Abstract

The study investigated features of mobile phone that EFL students potentially use as one as explores their perception toward mobile phone features. Located in one private university in Jakarta (English major and non-English major), this research focused to answer two main questions; 1) what are the features of mobile phone that EFL students’ mostly use to support their English learning? and 2) what are EFL students’ perceptions towards the use of mobile phones features in English learning context? To be able to answer the questions, the quantitative survey method was used by involving 200 students as respondents using Google form questionnaire online. After the data was collected, the researcher calculated and analyzed using IBM SPSS 24 to find mean and percentage. The result of questionnaire showed that students truly use mobile phone features for learning English with the most features that they used were MP3 Players for listening to English music. Next features used by students were Internet Browser, Educational Application, Video Recorder-Application, Game, Camera-Social Media Application, SMS, E-mail, Audio Recorder, and the last is Video Recorder. Meanwhile, from perception questionnaire, the students clearly stated that they enjoyed learning English by using mobile phone features. They strengthened mobile phone features can help them in self-learning than traditional learning.

Abstract

The global workforce of the 21st century needs not only young and skilled human capital capable of technical skills, but also academic skills in English as a priority. This study employed a quantitative approach with the survey design. The aim was to investigate how importance of English communication skills and Employability skills of Jakarta graduates post covid-19 in the workplace. The data showed that the questionnaire with total 20 items was sent to 101 Human Resource and Senior Manager in Jakarta, Indonesia, the highest selected options Human Resource and Senior Manager chose was very important and important. This data showed that the Human Resource and Senior Manager stated that the communication skills perceived as important for graduates. The questionnaire with total 40 items was sent to 203 graduates who have graduated in the last five years and works in StartUp company in Jakarta, Indonesia, the highest selected answers from graduates was Strongly Agree and Agree with total mean score 7.01. This data showed that graduates agreed that English communication have big impact for their employability skills. Based on the findings, this research revealing that the English communication is important for Graduates at the StartUp company in Jakarta. Human Resources and the graduates who are working in StartUp company, who already filled out surveys approval that the English communication has an influence on their ability.

Abstract

Universities have an important role in generating amazing alums who can compete with others. This role makes universities try to find a way to increase the alums' quality. One of them is the tracer study. Tracer study is a technique to track the alums' quality. Therefore, the research objective was to investigate the status, quality, and accomplishment of the graduates/alums of the English Education Program of FKIP UHAMKA. This research employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory research design which combined quantitative and qualitative research design. As many as 98 graduates from the English Education Program participated in the study. A questionnaire that was validated using a validity test before it was distributed through several social media was used as the instrument of this study. Findings have discovered that most of the graduates of the English Education Program who graduated in 2021 can implement their knowledge and abilities per the field of education they had on campus. Unfortunately, graduates whose jobs were in line with their field of study still got low payment. Further research is needed to evaluate the competencies and training that need to be accommodated by the campus to prepare upcoming alums before entering the workspace.

Abstract

Speaking English as a foreign language is a complex process that involves not only speaking skills but also various psychological aspects. Students’ anxiety in speaking English as a foreign language has been a prominent area of concern since many English as a foreign language student have been suffering from this feeling and dealing with various strategies to cope with it. This study aimed to investigate the strategies students used to deal with speaking anxiety. The research was conducted in a junior high school in East Jakarta. A total of 100 respondents were selected based on the criteria, which were students who felt anxious about speaking English. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The instruments applied in this study were interviews and Likert scale questionnaires. The data obtained were then accumulated and narrated. The findings indicate that students do not only use one strategy. The highest strategy used by students was Preparation Strategy (69%). Meanwhile, the least strategy (30%), is the Positive Thinking strategy.

Self-regulated learning enables some self-motivated students to find opportunities outside the classroom to have face to face and virtual interaction to enhance their English speaking. This study is intended to examine the level of self-regulated motivation of university students to improve their Speaking of English as a foreign language (SRMIS-EFL). Moreover, this study investigates if students' SRMIS-EFL differ accross academic levels. 156 EFL students from an English Department in a private university in Jakarta took part in this study. Self-reported SRMIS-EFL questionnaire was used as the data collecting method. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was then conducted. The findings showed that the overall SRMIS-ELF level of students was high. Moreover, students used various self-regulatory motivation strategies to enhance their EFL speaking skills. As for the aspect of academic level, the results of this study shows that SRMIS-EFL of senior students are lower than SRMIS-EFL of junior students , and there is a statistically significant difference of students’ SRMIS-EFL across academic levels. The findings of this study suggest the need for motivational regulation training into EFL programs to increase students’ awareness of motivational self-regulation strategies to enhance their self-regulated motivation.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of the impact of watching English movies on vocabulary acquisition. The research involved interviews with seven 12th-grade students from one state high schools in Jakarta, focusing on their experiences with English movies and their effects on vocabulary acquisition. The findings reveal that watching English movies offers significant benefits for language learning, including vocabulary enrichment, contextual learning, and improved pronunciation and accent. Participants showed preferences for specific movie genres such as comedy, romance, and science fiction, which aligned with their interests and motivated them to continue engaging with English media for learning purposes. Despite encountering challenges such as understanding dialogues and accents, students found diverse exposure to language contexts beneficial for enhancing linguistic competence. Strategies such as using subtitles and note-taking were highlighted as effective methods for maximizing vocabulary learning. Overall, personal preferences in movie genres played a crucial role in motivating students and increasing enjoyment in the language learning process. This study provides insights into the positive impact of English movies on vocabulary acquisition and suggests practical strategies for incorporating movie-based learning approaches in language education.

Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions of the influence of teachers' attitudes on their English learning achievement in senior high schools. Employing a qualitative research design, data were gathered through observations and semi-structured interviews with nine students from a senior high school in Jakarta. The analysis revealed four key themes: Teachers’ Attitudes and Student Confidence, Adaptability in Teaching, Creating Positive Learning Environments, and Impact on Learning Achievement. The findings showed that positive teacher attitudes significantly boost student confidence, while negative attitudes diminish enthusiasm for learning. Adaptability in teaching methods, including the integration of technology and varied learning resources, was found to enhance student engagement. Additionally, creating positive and supportive learning environments through engaging teaching strategies, such as games and discussions, fostered student interest and motivation. Constructive feedback and practical language skills development were linked to improved academic performance and language proficiency. The study underscores the critical role of positive teacher attitudes and student-centered approaches in facilitating successful English language acquisition, highlighting the importance of fostering supportive and engaging learning environments to enhance students' academic achievements and language proficiency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study to investigates the perspective of fanfiction readers on Twitter to improve their daily writing skills through Alternate Universe. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to obtain data from interviews. The type of method is a phenomenological approach by exploring the participant's subjective perspective on the Alternate Universe phenomenon on Twitter. The researcher interviewed five sources of Twitter users based on criteria have been settled, such as age, how often they read, how they felt about reading Alternate Universe, and their opinion about the Alternate Universe phenomenon. Data analysis applied consists of reduction of data, display of data, and conclusion illustrating or verification. The researcher used a variety of data-gathering procedures, such as in-depth interviews, to collect data or obtain information in a more detailed manner. The results of research through in-depth interview process with various informants' backgrounds. Based on interviews, they get heartfelt every time they read AU. Also, Alternate Universe can provide them with new knowledge. Thus, they could learn something new, such as new vocabulary, and discover motivation to write neatly.

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine Indonesian students' experiences in using technology in learning English outside the classroom with regards to learner autonomy as an important capacity for students learning success. The subjects of the study were students of a private Senior High School in South Tangerang. As for the methodology, this research applied quantitative and qualitative design. Quantitative elements include questionnaires as the data collecting method, while qualitative elements used semi structured interviews. In this interview, five students were chosen purposively based on students responses on the questionnaires. The findings of this study indicate that the use of technology to learn English outside the classroom has encouraged the development of learner autonomy which includes aspects of learning motivation, metacognitive awareness, self-confidence and social skills. This research is expected to help English teachers improve their students' English proficiency with the concern on the development of learner autonomy by using various information and communication technology.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship between employment status and employment to the perceptions of Indonesian teachers about the discourse of the implementation of full day school system. The data in this study was collected online with media questionnaires developed through googleform. The data collected is further processed using regression analysis method with SPSS to see the existence of relationship or relationship between variables. The result of the research shows that there is a relationship between employment status and work period to the perception of Indonesian teachers about the discourse of the implementation of full day school system. Based on the SPSS output results in the summary model table the value of "R" is 0.096 and 0.123 respectively. The results of this research can be used as one of the starting point to conduct a more comprehensive study related to the implementation of full day scholl system in the school system in Indonesia.
