Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertolak dari tuntutan peningkatan kompetensi penulisan akademik dosen dan mahasiswa dalam hal publikasi internasional. Khususnya kualitas penulisan abstrak artikel dikarenakan abstrak merupakan subbab pertama dan utama yang dijadikan dasar bagi para pengelola jurnal untuk meriviu manuskrip penulis. Tujuan dari PkM ini untuk memediasi pengembangan kompetensi peserta pelatihan dalam mengorganisasi pola wacana abstrak dan merealisasikan fitur-fitur kebahasaan dari wacana abstrak yang berterima dan berstandar internasional. Instrumen yang digunakan yaitu: pedoman analisis pola wacana abstrak artikel jurnal internasional, silabus pembelajaran, modul pembelajaran, materi pelatihan, alat bantu analisis pola wacana abstrak, kuesioner, dan protokol interviu. Metode PkM yang dipakai adalah pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk publikasi internasional berbasis genre dan berbasis data. Hasil menunjukkan: (1) proses pelaksanaan pelatihan penulisan abstrak untuk tujuan publikasi internasional, (2) persepsi dan sikap para peserta pelatihan, dan (3) perkembangan kualitas penulisan abstrak peserta pelatihan. Pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat mendongkrak tingkat diterimanya manuskrip para peserta pelatihan.

Abstract

Foreign language acquisition is one of the important issues in the current era of globalization. Indonesian is not an exception because, within the last twenty years, the significance of Indonesian language has increased. This study aims to reveal the problem of the learning of Indonesian language as a foreign language. It focused on adolescent learners from the United States of America in a reputable language institution. More specifically, there are two questions in this study. First, what are the barriers of learning Indonesian that were found by the American learners? Second, what are the types of teaching materials that these learners like? This study is a case study with descriptive methods. It was conducted in a training institution focusing to train Christian preachers. Four learners from the United States of America were the informants in this study. The data were generated from the four American learners in obtained through (1) observation; (2) depth interviews with informants; and (3) relevant documents. This study concluded that (1) in general, the barriers faced by the American learners can be classified into four types: social, mental, phonological, and grammatical; and (2) the learners prefer various teaching materials but their common preference is the authentic learning materials that consider aspects of audiovisual media use, Indonesian cultural diversity, and language formality. Since the study only relied on four informants, the results cannot be generalized to all learners of Indonesian Language. However, they can provide a figure in the learning of Indonesian language involving non-native speakers, especially the Americans.

Abstract

This research purposes to know the results of the Supreme Court's decision on fake news by implementing linguistic forensic and critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough's 1995 grand theory approach. Some categories of analysis include representation, relations, identity, and sociocultural practices. Individual who break the law by spreading fake news may imprisonment. This is in accordance with the rules stated in Article 45A paragraph (2) of law number 19 of 2016, which amends law number 11 of 2008.The research method used is descriptive qualitative by collecting and analyzing data from defendants who are proven to have committed acts of insult and hatred of Ethnic Religion and Intergroup. The results of data analysis are in the form of representation of news information, power relations contained in it, the identity of the defendant formed, and the sociocultural practices that arise. Sociocultural practices that occur in this context, such as discrimination, controversy, and manipulation of information. The results of this study can become a foundation to sensitize the public about the dangers of fake news, encourage changes in creating truth in media practices, and increase defendants' awareness of the importance of justice in the criminal justice system.

Abstract

Language documentation plays a critical role in preserving linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. However, balancing the academic goals of linguists with the practical needs and interests of indigenous communities remains a challenge. This study reports on the first phase of documenting the relatively isolated indigenous language of Baduy Dalam in Banten, Indonesia. Using a linguist-centered approach, the fieldwork involved eliciting language data and recording daily narratives, culminating in the creation of a small Baduy dictionary. While the project succeeded in capturing targeted word forms and sentence structures, local informants expressed concerns about its relevance to their community. These findings highlight the limitations of linguist-driven documentation efforts, suggesting the need for approaches that prioritize community engagement and shared ownership of language preservation initiatives. A shift towards community-based and multidisciplinary methodologies may foster greater participation, ensuring that language documentation aligns with both academic and local community objectives.

Abstract

This study intends to identify the types of deixis (personal, temporal, spatial) used in bilingual classrooms, to examine how deixis functions as a linguistic tool to support comprehension in bilingual learning environments, and to provide practical recommendations for lecturers on how to effectively integrate deixis and translanguaging in teaching. To answer the problems, classroom interaction was examined using a qualitative study through classroom observation, audio-recorded interactions, and interviews. The English-speaking Indonesian students and lecturers are participated in this study. According to the results, first, three types of deixis (personal, temporal, and spatial) were identified in bilingual classroom interactions using translanguaging practices. Second, deixis was functioned as an essential language tool for tying communication to particular people, places, and times, which promotes more seamless and contextually relevant interactions. Temporal deixis planned classroom activities, spatial deixis made collaborative work clear, and personal deixis promoted inclusion and relational dynamics. Last, the practical recommendation covered encouraging critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, and participation in multilingual environments. This study emphasizes how crucial it is to incorporate deixis and translanguaging into bilingual education in order to establish welcoming, stimulating, and productive learning environments. To extend these findings across other language and cultural contexts, more study is advised.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the language attitude tendencies of the millennial Sundanese-speaking group in the city of Bandung, along with the factors that influence them. A sociolinguistic approach using a mixed-methods design is employed to measure the dominance of language attitudes among millennials within various domains of their daily communication. This can indicate whether this generation is inclined to maintain their mother tongue or shift toward using other languages in their interactions. A total of 97 individuals responded to the distributed questionnaire; however, only 80 met the predetermined criteria. In this context, the researcher utilized a modified version of the instrument developed by Cohn (2013). In addition, interviews and observations were conducted to gain a deeper perspective on the language attitude tendencies of this millennial group. Millennials like Indonesian and international languages better than Sundanese online because they perceive them as more functional and global. However, though Sundanese use declines in everyday life, a significant majority of respondents are also concerned about language conservation and have encouraged electronic means of preserving Sundanese to thrive in new communication spaces. This study determines that while millennials are cognizant of Sundanese’s cultural and identity value, pragmatic limitations such as speech-level complexity and technological influence are contributing factors in its gradual decline. The findings emphasize the need for innovative strategies, including online content creation and policy implementation, to preserve the use and liveliness of Sundanese among the younger generations.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of metaphors in the conventional language employed by Indonesian food vloggers when describing food, claiming it as a form of linguistic creativity influenced by their cognitive capabilities. Creativity in language is a gift that humans inherently possess, enabling them to freely communicate, share information, and convey intentions. This premise is grounded in the claim that humans cognitively possess mental faculties allowing for unrestricted language production (Saeed, 2003). Traditionally, metaphors are understood as a literary style often used in poetry, novels, or drama. However, in reality, humans are inseparable from metaphors (Lakoff in Lakoff and Johnson, 2003). Cognitively, humans use metaphors to facilitate understanding by associating one term with another in language (Lakoff in Jackendoff and Aaron, 1991). The data source for this research comprises several videos from Indonesian food vloggers, including 4 videos each from Anak Kuliner, Boengkoes Network, Mamank Kuliner, and Nex Carlos. These vloggers are well-known in Indonesia with a substantial number of subscribers. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, which allows for a comprehensive explanation of phenomena observed in the data. The analysis reveals that in describing food, food vloggers tend to use structural metaphors more frequently than other types of metaphors, with 26 occurrences recorded. This finding indicates that equating the domain of food taste with another domain structurally makes it easier to convey and understand abstract taste experiences through the shared experiences of vloggers and their audiences

Abstract

Phonological difference between geographical areas is a primary topic for dialectology and sociolinguistics, especially in multilingual settings like Indonesia. Previous studies of Cirebon Javanese have been mostly concerned with lexical matters and general dialect groupings, whereas the more detailed phonemic differences and their geographical dynamics are understudied. This research is intended to describe the spatial distribution of consonantal phonemes /w/ and /b/ in Cirebon Javanese and identify points of conservatism and innovation. This research applied a descriptive qualitative research design, with data obtained from 534 respondents from 267 villages in four distinct areas (North, East, Central, and Northwest Cirebon). The five key lexical items that showed variation between /w/ and /b/ were examined through structured interviews, phonological coding, and geospatial analysis with the help of QGIS. The /w/ phoneme was predominantly present in the Northern and Eastern regions, with archaic linguistic features. The /b/ phoneme was discovered to be more prevalent in Central Cirebon, with phonological innovation as a result of urbanization and contact with Standard Indonesian. Also, transitional zones with merged forms were discovered in Northwest Cirebon. The geographical, social, and contact factors influence the phonological variation of Cirebon Javanese. This research underscores the need to incorporate spatial technologies into sociophonological investigation and informs a more nuanced understanding of dialect change in multilingual settings. Theoretically, it advances micro-level geolinguistic analysis; practically, it aids dialect documentation and preservation.

Abstract

This research examines Cirebon Javanese phonological variation from a geolinguistic perspective, highlighting the lack of in-depth studies on its phonological structure compared to other Javanese dialects. The aim is to delineate and characterise systematic vowel, consonant, elision, and epenthesis variation across geographical and social settings. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, data were gathered using the Swadesh list from native informants in 267 villages of the Cirebon regency, which comprised a diverse range of social and geographical settings. The data thus obtained were phonetically transcribed and subsequently analysed through a programmed algorithm that sorted phonological differences. The findings demonstrate the presence of systematic vowel shifts (e.g., /a/ → /ɔ/, /i/ → /ə/), consonant alternations (e.g., /b/ ↔ /w/), as well as elision and epenthesis. The above variations are due to internal linguistic factors, such as syllable structure and stress patterns, as well as external sociolinguistic and geographical considerations. The impact is especially marked in the transitional dialect areas with hybrid phonological characteristics due to language contact and social identity dynamics. This study enhances insight into the phonological variation and evolution in multilingual and dialect-diverse areas.
