Abstract

The study examines the spirituality of Saint Ignatius of Loyola by positioning the discernment of spirits as the core of the Ignatian faith experience and by exploring its relevance within the context of contemporary Christian life. Drawing on Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s conversion experience as processed through profound reflection, the study demonstrates that Ignatian spirituality developed as an approach to faith rooted in the dynamics of the human interior life and in openness to the action of the Holy Spirit within concrete life situations. Employing a qualitative method through library research, the study analyzes the principal works of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, particularly the Spiritual Exercises, as well as relevant contemporary literature in spiritual theology. The findings indicate that the discernment of spirits cannot be reduced to a form of psychological introspection; rather, it constitutes an integrative spiritual process that engages reason, affectivity, and the will in responsible decision-making oriented toward Gospel values. The Spiritual Exercises are understood as a holistic method of personal transformation, while the principles of finding God in all things and magis affirm the continuing relevance of Ignatian spirituality in addressing the challenges of the modern world. Accordingly, Ignatian spirituality offers a reflective, dialogical, and transformative framework of faith for contemporary Christian living.

Abstract

Religious radicalism is a multidimensional phenomenon arising from the complex interaction of theological, social, political, economic, and educational factors. In pluralistic societies such as Pontianak, radicalism has the potential to disrupt social cohesion if not addressed through a comprehensive approach that integrates faith, ethics, and social practice. This study aims to analyze how Catholic monks and nuns internalize and actualize the spirit of nationalism as a counter-radicalism strategy, while also understanding the meaning of Church teachings in the context of diversity, democracy, and respect for human dignity. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious figures across several parishes of the Archdiocese of Pontianak and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that radicalism prevention is carried out through enlightening Catholic religious education, interfaith dialogue, the reinforcement of tolerance values, respect for human dignity, development of critical thinking, and active engagement in diverse communities. The implementation of the spirit of nationalism not only strengthens loyalty to the state but also affirms the Gospel’s call to live in fraternity, solidarity, and justice. Accordingly, monks and nuns serve as agents of social transformation, embodying Gospel values while enhancing cohesion and peace in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

This article examines suicide from the perspectives of the sociology of religion and Catholic theology in order to understand its social, moral, and pastoral dimensions. The study employs a qualitative approach through interdisciplinary library research, integrating sociological theories of religion with theological reflections within the Catholic tradition. The analysis shows that suicide cannot be understood solely as an individual act but is closely related to social integration, communal solidarity, and the protective role of religious communities. From a theological perspective, Bunuh Diri Dalam Perspektif Sosiologi Agama dan Teologi KatolikCatholic teaching emphasizes the inherent dignity of the human person, the complexity of moral responsibility in situations of psychological suffering, and the primacy of divine mercy. The study argues that an interdisciplinary approach provides a more comprehensive framework for interpreting suicide and responding pastorally to those affected by it. It proposes a contextual pastoral response that includes spiritual accompaniment, compassionate pastoral care, and the strengthening of community support systems. Such an approach enables the Church to address the issue of suicide in a more humane, reflective, and pastorally responsible manner.

Abstract

This study explores in-depth the concept of freedom to marry within the framework of the Catholic Church’s Canon Law by examining three contemporary issues: the legal–moral capacity of prospective spouses, the Church’s position on same-sex marriage, and the juridical–moral status of couples who intentionally choose not to have children (childfree). Grounded in the Church’s teaching that marriage is a sacrament between one man and one woman—permanent, exclusive, and open to the gift of life—this research highlights that freedom and canonical capacity constitute fundamental prerequisites for the validity of the sacrament. Employing a qualitative approach through juridical-canonical analysis of the Code of Canon Law, magisterial documents, and contemporary moral theological scholarship, the study demonstrates that interior freedom and psychological maturity are essential elements in the giving of matrimonial consent. Furthermore, canonical impediments are understood as mechanisms safeguarding the integrity of the sacrament. Same-sex unions cannot be recognized either naturally or sacramentally, as they fail to fulfill the unitive and procreative dimensions of marriage. Likewise, an explicitly intended childfree choice may affect the validity of marriage as stipulated in Canon Law. The findings affirm the internal coherence of Canon Law in addressing modern moral challenges and present practical implications for marriage preparation, pastoral accompaniment, and moral formation. Consequently, this research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of freedom to marry, the sacramental purpose of matrimony, and the juridical and pastoral issues emerging within contemporary social contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the leadership model of the Apostle Paul and its relevance for contemporary leadership amid accelerating transformations across social, political, economic, and technological domains. The current leadership crisis—characterized by moral decline, corruption, and the misuse of authority—underscores the urgent need for a renewed leadership paradigm grounded in spiritual and moral integrity. Within this context, Paul is widely regarded as an archetype of transformative leadership who integrates vision, spirituality, and adaptability in his cross-cultural missionary work. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through a library research approach, this study examines primary and secondary sources, including the Scriptures, theological literature, and scholarly works on Christian leadership. The analysis demonstrates that Paul’s leadership is characterized by five core principles: serving as a divine calling, involving co-workers, nurturing spiritual maturity, delegating ministry according to gifts, and releasing responsibility without abandoning guidance. These principles emphasize collaboration, character formation, and ongoing mentorship, indicating their applicability across contemporary ecclesial and secular leadership contexts. Consequently, Paul’s leadership exemplifies a transformative model rooted in love, integrity, and spiritual responsibility, offering contemporary leaders a paradigm of servant leadership grounded in humility, faithfulness, and moral conviction.

Abstract

This article examines the conversion of Saint Dismas in Luke 23:39–43 to uncover its theological meaning and relevance for contemporary Christians. Using a qualitative, descriptive-analytical literature review, it analyses the biblical text through a hermeneutical approach alongside recent theological scholarship. The findings show that Dismas’s conversion comprises three key elements: awareness of sin, confession of faith in Jesus, and acceptance of saving grace, which form a basic paradigm for understanding the Sacrament of Penance and Christian renewal of life. Jesus’ promise, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise,” affirms the universality and immediacy of God’s saving grace that transcends time and social status. These insights speak to Christians today, who face individualism, moral relativism, and a tendency to postpone conversion. Saint Dismas thus inspires Church and faithful to practice ongoing repentance, open themselves to God’s forgiveness, and foster a culture of mercy in personal, family, and social life. Keywords: Conversion; Pastoral Theology; Sacrament of Penance; Saint Dismas; Saving Grace.

Abstract

The expression “I am” (egō eimi) constitutes one of the most distinctive and theologically significant elements in the Gospel of John and plays a central role in the revelation of Jesus’ identity. Far from functioning merely as a linguistic marker of self-identification, this expression serves as a medium of self-revelation through which Jesus discloses His relationship with God and the salvific meaning of His mission for humanity. This study aims to examine the theological significance of the “I am” sayings in the Gospel of John by exploring their biblical context, their roots in Old Testament tradition, and their christological and soteriological implications. Employing a qualitative approach through library research, this study applies an exegetical–theological method to the Johannine text, supported by relevant biblical-theological and exegetical literature. The findings indicate that the “I am” sayings with predicates portray Jesus’ role in the work of salvation through symbolic and relational language, while the absolute (without predicate) “I am” sayings explicitly affirm Jesus’ divine identity by echoing the revelation of the divine name in the Old Testament tradition. Consequently, the Gospel of John presents a high-level Christology that situates Jesus as the center of divine revelation and the source of salvation. This study affirms that the “I am” sayings carry not only doctrinal significance but also existential implications, inviting a response of faith and a lived relationship with Christ in the contemporary life of believers.

Abstract

Social change in the context of liquid modernity has significantly influenced how people understand interpersonal relationships, love, and commitment. Contemporary relationships tend to be flexible, temporary, and oriented towards the fulfillment of subjective needs, making loyalty and long-term commitment often viewed as a threat to personal autonomy. Based on Zygmunt Bauman's analysis of liquid modernity and liquid love, this study examines the crisis of modern relationships as an anthropological and theological crisis of meaning. Specifically, the study focuses on the Nota Doktrinal Una Caro as the Catholic Church's theological response to these relational dynamics. Using a library research method with a qualitative and analytical-hermeneutical approach, this study interprets magisterial texts in critical dialogue with the sociological theory of liquid modernity. The research findings show that the Nota Doktrinal Una Caro offers an integrated anthropological-theological vision by affirming Catholic marriage as a permanent, monogamous, and indissoluble communion of life and love. Fidelity is understood as the highest actualization of freedom, while sexuality is seen as an expression of total self-giving, offering an alternative to the fragmentation of modern relationships. The study also emphasizes the importance of a dialogical and formative approach in family counseling.
