Abstract

Background: Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for breast cancer to prevent cancer progression, but health protocols, such as social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, hinder timely treatment. Although many qualitative studies have investigated the experiences of breast cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, few have explored the coping strategies of women undergoing chemotherapy during this time.Purpose: This study explored the coping strategies of women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological design was employed to explore the experiences of women living with breast cancer and their coping mechanisms. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants who met the following criteria: (1) women diagnosed with breast cancer who had chosen to undergo chemotherapy and (2) women attending chemotherapy sessions at the treatment center. Patients with a history of severe chemotherapy side effects were excluded from the study. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 25 participants, and transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Four key themes emerged from the data analysis, including (1) feeling the uncertainty of life, (2) emotional turbulence, (3) surviving under pressure, and (4) accepting the situation. Participants demonstrated positive adaptive coping strategies to manage the challenges of breast cancer and chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Surviving and accepting conditions were identified as vital coping mechanisms that help women with breast cancer maintain their quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. These strategies play a crucial role in maintaining mental well-being amid uncertain and stressful circumstances.

Abstract

Introduction: Patient safety remains a primary concern in healthcare, focusing on the prevention of medical errors and adverse side effects affecting patients. Despite numerous efforts to improve patient safety, incidents continue to occur, resulting in significant harm to patients. One critical factor in addressing this issue is the role of caring behaviors. Nurses' caring behaviors can serve as a strategy to enhance patient safety. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' caring behaviors and the implementation of patient safety protocols in the Emergency Department (ED) of Dr. Soegiri Lamongan Hospital. Methods: A correlational research design was employed using a cross-sectional approach. The study involved 28 nurses working in the Emergency Room. The instruments used included the CBI-24 (Caring Behavior Inventory) and a patient safety implementation questionnaire based on the International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG). Data were analyzed using univariate analysis (frequency distribution and percentage) and bivariate analysis (Coefficient of Contingency, with a p-value < 0.05). Results: The results showed that most nurses exhibited caring behaviors, with 18 respondents (64.3%) demonstrating these behaviors, and the majority had implemented patient safety protocols, with 21 respondents (75%) adhering to these measures. The coefficient of contingency test yielded a p-value of 0.023. Conclusions: A significant relationship was found between nurses' caring behaviors and the implementation of patient safety in the Emergency Department. This study highlights the critical role that nurses' caring behaviors play in enhancing patient safety. It is recommended that nurses continue to improve their caring behaviors and implement patient safety measures effectively. This approach will contribute to providing professional and cautious services, thereby improving the overall quality and safety of patient care.

Abstract

Introduction: The overcrowded Emergency Department (ED) conditions often make nurses feel overwhelmed when handling patients, causing family members to want their loved ones to be treated more quickly. However, in reality, the patient's condition may not be critical or an emergency. This leads the family to feel dissatisfied and unwilling to accept the services provided by nurses. This study aimed to determine the level of satisfaction among patient families in the ED of Dr. Soegiri Lamongan Regional Hospital. Methods: The research used a descriptive quantitative method with a convenience sampling technique. The sample consisted of 103 respondents who were family members of patients in the Emergency Department of Dr. Soegiri Lamongan Regional Hospital. The variable examined was family satisfaction, which was measured using the 20-item RATER questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using univariate techniques and presented in frequency distribution tables. Results: The study show that the level of satisfaction among patient families in the ED of Dr. Soegiri Lamongan Regional Hospital was generally categorized as quite satisfied. Conclusions: Efforts undertaken by nurses and hospitals to improve and maintain patient and family satisfaction include routine room supervision and the implementation of nursing training activities to enhance the quality of nursing services and patient satisfaction at Dr. Soegiri Lamongan Regional Hospital. Institutions must be committed to fostering a high-quality service environment by providing staff with the necessary resources, facilities, and policies.

Abstract

Introduction: Spirituality plays an important role in the physical health of patients with chronic diseases. This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurses in providing spiritual care to patients with heart failure (HF) in Indonesia. Method: This study employed a descriptive exploratory design with a qualitative approach. Thirteen nurses from the cardiology unit were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and field notes. Thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the data. Results: Five major themes emerged, including perceptions regarding spiritual care, the importance of meeting the spiritual needs of patients, implementation of spiritual care, obstacles in providing spiritual care, and nurses’ hopes. Most participants associated spiritual care with religious practices. All participants believed that the spiritual needs of patients with HF must be met. However, spiritual care was still rarely implemented. Nurses commonly assisted patients in performing religious practices rather than addressing existential needs. The barriers to providing spiritual care originated from patients, nurses, and the availability of tools. The nurses hoped that specific personnel could provide spiritual care and that spiritual guidance activities in the hospital could be reactivated. Conclusions: Spiritual care remains a neglected aspect in the treatment of patients with HF. Facilitating religious practices is the primary intervention that fulfills the spiritual needs of patients with HF in Indonesia.
