Abstract

Abstract: The integration of technology into the EFL teaching and learning has become very important since technology can present real life English communication with its complexities into the classroom. This integration has challenged EFL educators to be digitally literate in using technology to support English teaching and learning context. However, problems dealing with technology context in EFL classroom setting such as inaccessible high technology tool, unstable electricity source and unreliable data connection sometimes occur and therefore limit the teaching and learning experience. This paper aims to explore the way of coping with limited technology contexts by carefully selecting and then integrating three most familiar technical tools to the EFL classroom activity namely Facebook, mobile phone and computer, and by manipulating its features to construct the students’ learning experiences in both actual and virtual learning environment. Keywords: Facebook, mobile phone, computer, EFL, technology

Abstract

This article reports a phenomenological study investigating the implementation of guided literacy instruction, geared to L2 students in reading multiple texts as the fabric of today’s literacy practice. Guided literacy instruction in this study aimed to promote the role of a student reader as a designer, navigator, interrogator, and interpreter in reading multimodal English-medium texts. Interviews, observations, and think-aloud protocols were used to collect data. Two L2 students volunteered to take part in this multimodal text-based reading project. Findings showed that the students experienced different reading activities resulting from the absence and presence of guided literacy instruction. The students’ experiences differed in the ways the students maximized the use of webpage text features, navigated texts across hyperlinks, and interpreted multiple modes of texts during a meaning making process. The empirical implication of this study is that future research is needed to investigate factors influencing the implementation of guided literacy instruction in reading multimodal English-medium texts. Pedagogically, multimodal text can be a meaningful learning resource that students can use to learn a range of knowledge and language resources beyond the classroom zone.

Abstract

A mismatch between students’ learning styles and teacher’s teaching styles can cause ineffective instructional activities to happen. To avoid that, a teacher must be informed about students’ behaviors in the classroom that shape one’s learning styles, and use such information to develop teaching styles that are compatible with students’ learning styles. This paper discusses about the spectrum of learning styles and its impact on teaching styles taken from the perspectives of Lawrence’s and Grasha’s explanations and theories on teaching styles and their implications to classroom instructions. Suggestions of instructions that match learning styles and teaching styles and to overcome teacher’s resistance to modify one’s teaching styles are presented. The discussions and suggestions made contribute to instructional theories. Keywords: learning styles, teaching styles, instruction
