Abstract

The Aceh peace process has been ongoing for nearly two decades. Some studies note that an essential aspect contributing to the Aceh peace context is the presence of local political parties in the post-peace era. This article aims to describe the declining existence of local political parties in the political life of Aceh society. This study employs a qualitative method, with primary data obtained from interviews and secondary data gathered from relevant literature reviews. The study reveals that local political parties in post-conflict Aceh have essentially gone through three of the four phases and are beginning to enter the fourth. The first phase is the formation of local political parties, the second is their rise, and the third is their victory in Aceh's political contestation. The fourth phase is decline or reduction, characterized by local parties being abandoned by their supporters. This research identifies several factors indicating the current existence of local political parties in the decline phase: 1) Loss of public trust; 2) Pessimism among political actors; 3) Weak party integrity and human resources; 4) Unprofessional organizational management; and 5) Internal conflicts within the party. These factors are not independent but are interconnected with one another.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is an ethnographic note about the Mawlid celebrations in Aceh. In contrast to most studies by previous scholars who saw Mawlid as a medium for normative theological discourse, this article aims to narrate the Mawlid phenomenon by focusing on how the Acehnese celebrated Mawlid, how the religious expression was, and how Mawlid became a political medium. This study showed that the Mawlid celebration in Aceh is not just a tradition or an expression of love for the Prophet but a cultural construction inherent to the Acehnese society, religious expression, and political media. Mawlid as a cultural construction is manifested in various forms of unique food dishes, as a religious expression manifested in typical Dhikr and Lectures Mawlid, and as a political medium seen from the invitations of Mawlid, Mawlid Pemda, and Mawlid at home. Keywords: Acehnese; Mawlid Celebration; Culture; Social Identity; Religious Expression; Political Medium.

In the context of Aceh, the word “Ulama" refers to an Islamic scholar who own boarding school (In Aceh language known as Dayah) or a leader of an Islamic boarding school (known as Teungku Dayah). The assumption that Ulama are unable running their authorities in Acehnese society especially in the post-conflict era. Ideally, their roles are needed in the reconciliation regarding the agents of reconciliation who have authority like the Ulama and are trustworthy by Acehnese society. Therefore, this article aims to discuss the position of Ulama in the process of post-conflict reconciliation in Aceh. To investigate the problem, a descriptive qualitative method was used, where the method is to describe the nature of a temporary situation that occurs when the research is carried out in detail, and then the causes of the symptoms were examined. The data were literature studies, participatory observation, and in-depth interviews. The results of this research showed that during an important period of Aceh's history, the Ulama constantly become guardians that provide a religious ethical foundation for each socio-political change in Aceh, and subsequently they also act as the successor to the religious style that developed in the society. Even the formation and development of the socio-political and cultural system occurred partly on the contribution of the Ulama. The position of Ulama in the process of post-conflict reconciliation in Aceh can be found in four ways. Firstly, knowledge transmission. Secondly, as a legal decision-maker which refers to Sharia law, especially related to the reconciliation process. Thirdly, as a mediator. Fourthly, cultural roles in the form of ritual or ceremonial guides that are carried out when the parties of the conflict have met an agreement to reconcile.

Abstract

Peace education is vital for fostering harmony and sustainable development, particularly in post-conflict areas like Aceh, Indonesia. This study explores the synergy between government policies and educational practices in implementing peace values at MAN 1 Pidie. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Informants included school staff, teachers, and government officials. Data were analyzed using Miles and Hubermans interactive model, focusing on the translation of government policies into school practices. Six core peace values”cooperation, tolerance, mutual respect, teamwork, leadership, and recognition of rights”are integrated into MAN 1 Pidie's curriculum, extracurricular activities, and school culture. Government support through policy frameworks, teacher training, and resource provision is instrumental in sustaining these efforts. While the program has successfully fostered inclusivity and reconciliation, challenges such as resource disparities and limited teacher capacity remain. Collaborative efforts between stakeholders are essential for improving sustainability and relevance. This study highlights the importance of government-education collaboration in embedding peace values.

Abstract

The way past conflict narratives are understood and taught plays a crucial role in reconciliation and peacebuilding efforts in post-conflict regions such as Aceh, Indonesia. However, the effectiveness of this process depends on how complex and sensitive historical knowledge is transmitted and internalized by key educational actors. This study aims to examine the depth, sources, and characteristics of historical knowledge about the Aceh conflict held by high school teachers and students in Pidie District. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, passive classroom observation, and document analysis at MAN 1 Pidie. The findings reveal a significant knowledge gap. Teachers’ understanding of the Aceh conflict tends to be fragmented, heavily reliant on personal experiences, and constrained by perceptions of limited formal teaching resources. As a result, students acquire minimal formal knowledge from school, often relying on informal sources—such as family narratives and digital media—whose validity is questionable. This knowledge gap hinders the development of students’ critical understanding of the past and limits the potential of education as a transformative vehicle for peace. The study underscores the urgent need for systemic interventions, including curriculum reform, foundational capacity-building for teachers (content mastery and critical pedagogy), and the enhancement of students’ critical literacy in navigating contested historical narratives.
