Chuzhen acupuncture or in English-language publications called “pestle needle” or “Chuzhen acupuncture” is a non-invasive method of acupuncture therapy by massaging along the meridians and pressing on acupuncture points. So Chuzhen therapy is a combination of massage (“tuina”) and acupressure. The hechelu in the back of the neck used for the treatment of cervical syndrome consists of seven lines, namely one running on the median line according to the GV meridian along the spine, three lines each on the left and on the right running parallel to the GV, spaced about 0.5 inches, 1 and 1.5 inches lateral to the GV, from the level of Naohu point (GV17) at the upper border of the atlas vertebra, to the level of Dazhui point (GV14) at the base of the seventh cervical vertebra (7 cervical vertebra).

Abstract

Background: Homeostasis is a key concept in life survival. Today, researchers are discovering redox homeostasis as the basis of a wide variety of degenerative diseases. Various methods are studied to maintain redox homeostasis, especially by increasing the body's antioxidant defenses, so that they can prevent and treat various modern diseases, one of which is through acupuncture. Methodology: This article is a systematic review of the therapeutic effects of acupuncture on redox homeostasis published in the PubMed database, Researchgate, CNKI, in the last 10 years. Results: The concept of redox homeostasis is identical to that of Yin-Yang homeostasis in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine). It turns out that acupuncture therapy, which has the effect of maintaining and restoring Yin-Yang homeostasis, has also been shown to have an effect on increasing antioxidant power and reducing body oxidants in various pathological conditions. There are no adverse effects from acupuncture therapy. Conclusion: Acupuncture therapy is effective and safe for maintaining and restoring redox homeostasis, especially for its anti-oxidant effect in various redox reward conditions.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia due to abnormal insulin secretion, insulin function or both. Based on World Health Organization, DM was the eighth leading cause of death in the world (2012), 43% of deaths happened at age less than 70 years. Microvascular and macrovascular complications caused by DM, long-term therapy, and side effects of therapy have greatly affected the patients’ quality of life. Hence, people have seeked many DM adjuvant therapy from herbs, one of which is goji berries [Lycium barbarum]. The Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) has been shown to have blood glucose lowering effect. Methods: This study aimed to investigate the effect of goji berries on reducing blood glucose levels. The research was conducted through pre and posttest design on fasting and two hours postprandial blood glucose levels in young adult males before and after receiving 20 g dried goji berries per day for 14 days. Statistical analysis used in this research was paired t test with α=0.05. Results: This study showed that the consumption of goji berries for 14 days did not significantly affect the fasting and two hours postprandial blood glucose levels (p>0.05) of the volunteers. Conclusion: Goji berries did not reduce fasting and two hours postprandial blood glucose levels in normoglycemic males.
