Abstract

Research on improving the quality of rajumas wood (Duabanga moluccana) through heat treatment aims to determine the effect of heat treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of rajumas wood. This study used an experimental method with an experimental design in the form of a non-factorial complete randomized design, namely the temperature factor with the treatment of three temperature variations of 140oC, 160oC, 180oC and three replications. Heat treatment carried out in this study caused changes in the three parameters of the physical properties of rajumas wood tested, namely moisture content, density, and dimensional stability. Changes in the physical properties of wood occurred in all three variations of treatment temperature (140oC, 160oC, 180oC). Heat treatment results showed a positive response that can improve the physical properties of rajumas wood. Heat treatment showed an increase in MoE and MoR wood mechanics properties as the treatment temperature increased. The use of 160oC heating temperature gives the highest MoE and MoR improvement results and the use of higher heating temperatures will reduce wood mechanics. Heat treatment method can be an effective method in improving wood properties.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic conditions of farmers in the Alam Lestari Community Forest (HKm), Jangkok Resort, West Rinjani Forest Management Unit (KPH). The approach used is qualitative descriptive, with purposive sampling to select 71 respondents from two Forest Farmer Groups (KTH). The analyzed variables include farmers' social characteristics, livelihood diversity, income, and poverty levels. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, and analyzed using descriptive methods. The results show that most farmers have a low education level, their primary occupation is farming, and they cultivate less than 0.5 hectares of land. The main income sources are non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as durian, coffee, and cocoa. Poverty level analysis based on World Bank standards indicates that most farmers live above the poverty line and are considered prosperous. Socially, farmers' participation in HKm management is relatively high, especially in physical activities such as communal work. However, access to cooperative institutions remains low due to a lack of trust. This study concludes that HKm management contributes to improving farmers' economic conditions, although challenges related to land access and institutional participation need to be addressed for program sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of yakisugi surface charring treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of Rajumas wood (Duabanga moluccana). The method involved surface burning for 0 (control), 20, 40, and 60 seconds using a butane gas torch. Tests were conducted on moisture content, density, shrinkage, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of rupture (MoR), and modulus of elasticity (MoE). Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s HSD test (α = 0.05) was performed to evaluate treatment effects. The results showed that burning duration affected both physical and mechanical properties of Rajumas wood. Longer burning durations improved dimensional stability by reducing moisture content, water absorption, and swelling; however, mechanical strength (MoR and MoE) tended to decrease at 60 seconds due to partial thermal degradation of cell wall polymers. Moderate exposure (20–40 seconds) provided an optimal balance between improved stability and acceptable strength retention. This study highlights the novel application of Yakisugi to a fast-growing tropical hardwood, offering a sustainable surface modification technique for enhancing durability and performance in non-structural wood applications.

Abstract

Selat Village in West Lombok Regency is known as a bamboo sunshade craft center with abundant bamboo resources. However, the production of bamboo blinds is still done traditionally without the application of preservation technology, making it vulnerable to attacks by destructive organisms such as powder beetles and fungi. Lack of information on effective preservation techniques leads to low product quality and selling value. Therefore, this service activity aims to provide training and assistance to artisan groups in applying simple and environmentally friendly preservation methods. The methods used include an initial survey to understand the condition of the craftsmen, counseling with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) approach, and the design and implementation of a bamboo preservation tool based on soaking in 5% borax solution. Socialization was conducted to 30 craftsmen from the “Karya Mandiri” group and involved the village and surrounding community. The results of the activity show that the soaking preservation method is more suitable for the needs of craftsmen than the VSD method because the bamboo raw materials used are already in the form of blades. The application of this method can increase the durability of bamboo, speed up the curing process from 1 month to 7-10 days, and increase the selling value of bamboo blinds. The follow-up plan includes periodic evaluation, further training on product finishing and packaging, and promotion through social media to expand the market. This activity contributes to improving the quality and competitiveness of bamboo sunshade products, which is expected to strengthen the economy of the Selat Village community through more effective and sustainable bamboo processing.
