Abstract

Understanding of written texts is one of the important competencies that learners of German as a foreign language must master. Therefore, making students good readers is the main goal in the German middle class, where students must reach level B1. During online learning German there are obstacles in the learning process, especially in learning reading skills for middle-level German classes in the course. Deutsch 3. Students tend to be less active and teachers cannot control it directly because there is no face-to-face process. The results of the questionnaire to students showed that the teaching method used was considered less cooperative and boring. To overcome this problem, an integrated reading method or reciprocal reading is applied. This method (Palinscar and Brown 1984) requires interaction between students through an integrated reading strategy, namely summarizing, questioning, clarifying, predicting, and responding to what they read. The interaction between students increases their activity in class because they have to interact in order to understand the content of the reading that is being discussed. After the application of the reciprocal reading method, online learning reading skills in the Deutsch 3 course experienced significant changes. This is evidenced through the results of research findings which indicate differences in values and motivation between the control class and the experimental class. The post-test results showed that the experimental class experienced a higher increase in scores than the control class. In addition to increasing the value of the experimental class, there was also an increase in motivation as evidenced by the results of student questionnaires

Abstract

The study completion in undergraduate program (S1) requires the completion of thesis writing for students. The flow of thesis preparation at the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), has followed the Thesis Writing Guidebook issued by FBS Unesa. In the manual, the requirements and procedures for writing a thesis are clearly written. But even so, there are still many students who have not been able to complete their thesis writing on time, which hinders the completion of their studies. Therefore, it is necessary to identify students' difficulties in completing their studies, especially at the thesis writing stage. From the results of the distribution of research instruments in the form of questionnaires, it was concluded that there were five categories of difficulties faced by students, namely: 1) Difficulties in submitting / selecting research titles, 2) Difficulties in the consultation process, 3) Difficulties in data collection and processing, 4) Difficulties in the examination process, and 5) Difficulty in the revision process.

Abstract

This article describes the use of quantitative data processing using the Chi-Square Test (X2) analytical statistical technique, which is applied to linguistic problems related to the relationship between first singular pronouns and the data corpus. Based on a corpus of data collected from the website of Badan Bahasa in the form of books by 18 writers in 2016, 2017 and 2018, this article measures the relationship between singular first person pronouns AKU and SAYA to a data corpus. Chi-Square test (X2) determines the relationship between these two variables (namely AKU and SAYA) to the data corpus. The results of the analysis show that there is an association pattern that cannot be said to be statistically random between the appearance or absence of the pronouns AKU and SAYA in the existing corpus. With quantitative analysis like the one shown in this study, the association pattern of apparently random variants can finally be statistically proven as well. The existence of a statistically significant distribution raises the possibility of linguistically interesting things to be investigated further.

Abstract

This study describes the language phenomenon that occurs at Pererenan Beach, Badung Regency, Bali. A variety of outdoor signage were found at this beach, such as banners, information boards, signboards, etc. Data was obtained through observation and photographic documentation. The data were then analyzed qualitatively. In these public signs there are interesting language phenomenon, namely the phenomenon we know as multilingualism. Multilingualism that appears in the form of code mixing, bilingualism, and interference. A comparison of data collected from two years shows that outdoor signs at Pererenan Beach need to be made better in the context of aggregate. Aggregate signs at Pererenan Beach are still dominated by non-permanent aggregate signs. A better long-lasting aggregate signs could be made of stone or ceramic components. Although these code mixing, bilingualism, and interference do not lead to misunderstandings in interpreting the information contained in the outdoor signs, but it is still an interesting phenomenon to be discussed.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology in the Society 5.0 era demands innovation in foreign language learning. This study focuses on the utilization of the digital learning medium Educandy as an effort to enhance students’ competence and motivation in learning German. This topic is considered important because most teachers still use conventional teaching methods that tend to be less engaging and result in low student involvement. The research activities were conducted through a community service program at SMAN 1 Driyorejo, involving teachers and students of German language subjects. The method employed was descriptive qualitative with a participatory training model, which included the stages of preparation, training, mentoring, and evaluation. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation of activities. The results show that the implementation of Educandy in the learning process is able to improve students’ mastery of vocabulary and grammar, foster learning motivation, and encourage active participation in classroom activities. Teachers also experienced greater ease in the assessment process and in creating interactive learning media. These findings demonstrate that interactive digital media can serve as an effective, innovative, and relevant learning tool that meets the educational needs of the modern era. Thus, the use of Educandy contributes significantly to improving students’ language competence while simultaneously strengthening teachers’ digital pedagogical skills.

Abstract

This community engagement program addressed the need to strengthen the capacity of teachers at Pondok Pesantren Bumi Shalawat Sidoarjo to serve as internal TOEFL ITP trainers. The program was conducted from September to October 2025 and involved 15 teachers. It employed a participatory training and mentoring approach through needs analysis, pre-test, workshops on TOEFL ITP sections, item analysis practice, lesson-plan development, microteaching, post-test evaluation, and follow-up planning. The results indicated measurable improvement. Participants’ understanding of TOEFL ITP increased from 75% before the program to 100% after the program, while teaching readiness increased from 35% to 80%. The development of training products, including lesson plans, practice materials, and follow-up plans, also improved by 50%. These results show that the program strengthened teachers’ conceptual understanding, pedagogical readiness, and institutional capacity to initiate an internal TOEFL ITP training program. The novelty of the program lies in its train-the-trainer orientation, which focuses on empowering teachers as local facilitators rather than preparing them merely as test takers. Overall, the program contributed to teacher empowerment and provided a practical foundation for sustainable TOEFL ITP support in Islamic boarding school settings.
