Abstract

The present study aims at examining EFL teachers’ perceptions of Language Assessment Literacy (hereafter LAL) in the context of Indonesian higher education. To this aim, purposive sampling technique was employed to select sixteen EFL university teachers to participate in an online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The finding showed that the participants had applied six types of LAL in their teaching practices with formative assessment methods and test validity and reliability being the two most applied (more than 80%) by the participants. Following this, between 75% and 80% participants had applied two other types of LAL, linguistics competence and test results. The last two types of LAL, digital literacy and grading criteria, were applied by less than 70% participants. Another finding from qualitative data revealed that the majority of participants (over 70%) ranked their level of LAL knowledge and skills as low. Despite some limitations, the present study provides some implications including the necessity for the EFL teachers to be equipped with relevant knowledge and skills to make the way for quality assessment. It is therefore university authorities should organize professional development programs with the purpose to help teachers improve their assessment literacy. In addition, all educational parties should collaborate to consistently conduct literacy assessment projects throughout teachers’ professional career. Some suggestions for future research in the field of language assessment are also presented.

Abstract

This study aims to develop learning media in the form of learning videos of Phymol (Physics Mobile Learning) Integrated Games on the material of Temperature and Heat. The research method used is the R&D (Research and Development) research method with the ADDIE development model, including the stages of Analysis (analysis), Design (design), Development (development), Implementation (implementation) and Evaluation (evaluation). In this study, the product was validated using an expert validation instrument which was distributed to two lecturers and three teachers and a limited trial was conducted using student response questionnaires. The results of product validation show an average percentage of 92% with a very feasible category. The limited trial conducted by the researcher involved 30 students of SMA Negeri 5 Cilegon. Student responses showed an average percentage of 86% with a very good category. Based on the results of expert validation and student response questionnaires, physics learning media in the form of Phymol learning videos (Physics Mobile Learning) integrated Games on Temperature and Heat material is very feasible and can be used as a physics learning medium. Keywords: physics learning, games, temperature and heat . DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i1.pp111-122

Abstract

Public health is part of a lifestyle that is used to prevent disease, extend life span, and improve the quality of human resources. Therefore, it is very necessary to study public health from various aspects, so that the goals and targets to be achieved can be realized. One of the studies presented was the use of contraceptives for rural communities, especially rural communities in Suralaga District, East Lombok Regency - West Nusa Tenggara. The use of contraceptives, which is one of the methods used in implementing family planning, is still at a relatively low level. Based on the data held relating to this matter, analysis and data processing are needed in determining the decisions to be taken to determine the effect of contraceptives in improving public health. Data processing and analysis is carried out using the Random Forest algorithm, which is due to the appropriate characteristics of the datasets used. To get the best results or performance in determining the level of accuracy, the datasets used have 10 attributes, namely: full name, age, last education, couple of childbearing age, age at first pregnancy, age at first birth, ready for birth control, contraceptives, following the contact program, and birth distance. The accuracy obtained was 71.99% with the decision tree output that the most common and efficient contraceptives used in the Suralaga District area were birth control pills and birth control injections.

Abstract

This study aims to examine assessment strategies employed by thesis supervisors in assessing their students qualitative research, and to explore the thesis supervisors’ perceptions of their assessment strategies. Conducted in an Indonesian university, this study adopted an explanatory sequential design of mixed-research by using a purposive sampling technique to recruit ten thesis supervisors as the research participants.  The findings showed that the supervisors made a total of 1,002 feedback comments on the 20 thesis drafts. The feedback comments focused on five different aspects of students’ theses including research components (58.98%), coherent and cohesion (22.32%), grammatical accuracy (10.27%), vocabulary used (4.49%), and reference and citations (3.89%). Meanwhile, data gained from interview sessions revealed four dominant themes in supervisors’ perceptions of their assessment strategies including instructional scaffolding, time efficiency, students’ engagement, and researcher independence. Despite some limitation such as limited number of participants and inadequate research instruments, this study provides pedagogical implication including the necessity to facilitate students with relevant trainings to help improve their thesis writing skills. Suggestions for future research are also presented.

Abstract

This community service aims to provide TOEFL training to students of grade XII SMA I Masbagik (East Lombok Regency-West Nusa Tenggara). The knowledge and skills they gained from this TOEFL training can later be used to meet the requirements when applying for overseas scholarship programs. 20 students participated in this TOEFL training which was held three times a week for one month, in December 2022. The results of pre-test and post-test indicated that each participant showed an increase in their TOEFL score after the training. In addition, the data gained from interview process revealed the participants’ perceptions which reported positive responses to this TOEFL training. The implication of this community service is that we acknowledge what difficulties students of grade XII have experienced in learning TOEFL and solutions that can be done to help them. Despite this, the limitation of this TOEFL training is that it only involves relatively few participants and in a relatively short amount of time. The next TOEFL training can recruit more participants and allocate a longer training time to obtain maximum result.

Abstract

It has been argued by scholars that ESP (English for Specific Purposes) has several absolute features which distinguish it from EGP (English for General Purposes). It is not surprising that many EGP teachers face difficulties when teaching ESP classes. This mixed-method study randomly recruited EGP teachers (N=50) to complete an online survey regarding barriers they have experienced in teaching ESP courses. Some of them (N=20) were then invited to participate in interview sessions to discover their strategies in breaking the barriers. The results from quantitative data in the online survey showed that the teachers have been dealing with five different barriers with Subject Knowledge being the most difficult barrier to handle (M=3.14, SD=0.86). Meanwhile, the qualitative findings from the interview process revealed several strategies employed by the teachers to break the barriers appeared to have been intercorrelated and affected to each other. As this finding revealed, university authorities need to provide EGP teachers with some supports (i.e. training programs, financial aid, and relevant textbooks) to minimize potential barriers when teaching ESP classes. Limitations and suggestions for future research are also presented.

Abstract

This study discusses the challenges and strategies involved in using ChatGPT as an academic writing tool. The purpose of this study is to identify user perceptions, obstacles encountered, and strategies applied in effectively utilizing ChatGPT in the context of academic writing. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods through closed questionnaires, open questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews, involving 25 participants for questionnaire completion and 3 participants for interviews. Data from closed questionnaires were analyzed using percentage calculations in Microsoft Excel, while data from open questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing stages. The results showed that most respondents had a positive view of ChatGPT as an academic writing tool (S4 = 1.56; S10 = 1.64), although their proficiency level was still in the moderate category (S1 = 1.28). The main challenges identified include over-reliance on ChatGPT, which has led to a decline in independent writing skills (S5 = 1.92), the provision of irrelevant answers (S6 = 2.48), and a decline in creativity (S9 = 2.16). In addition, respondents also highlighted the inaccuracy of references and overly general answers as additional obstacles. In terms of strategy, users attempted to verify information sources, use ChatGPT only in the early stages of writing, and maintain the originality of their writing. Overall, the results of this study show that ChatGPT can be an effective tool in supporting the academic writing process when used wisely, critically, and responsibly.
