Abstract

Given the fact that online teaching has been widely implemented across the globe during this Covid-19 pandemic, teachers are required to have a high level of IT skills to be able to conduct online teaching. It is without exception that EAP (English for Academic Purpose) teachers need to familiarize themselves with electronic devices due to the benefits they have to offer in an e-learning environment. The current study aims at examining teachers’ perceptions of using e-learning tools in the context of Indonesian EAP classrooms. Forty-five Indonesian EAP teachers participated in the current study with different ages, academic backgrounds, and lengths of EAP teaching experiences. The instruments used to collect the research data were an online survey and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that video and VLEs were the two most commonly-used e-learning tools among the teachers with “self-taught” and “colleagues” being the two most favorite approaches the teachers have employed to learn such tools. Besides, promoting student engagement and developing learner autonomy were perceived as positive impacts of using e-learning tools by the teachers. Pedagogical implications of this study’s findings suggested that school authorities should organize more regular pre-service teacher training programs with the purpose to help novice teachers to improve their IT skills. Besides, e-learning tools should be more used in online teachings due to the benefits they have to offer for promoting student engagement and facilitating learner autonomy. A number of limitations in the current study are also presented along with some suggestions for future studies

Abstract

The current study aims to investigate challenges experienced by ESP students. Conducted at the University of Hamzanwadi (East-Lombok, Indonesia), this study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods with two instruments to collect data, questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire was electronically sent out to 100 ESP students to discover challenges they have been dealing with, which was then statistically analyzed. In addition, semi-structured interviews were carried out with a representative of 20 ESP students to examine their perceptions of the challenges, which were then qualitatively analyzed using a coding system. The results of quantitative data revealed that the students have been experiencing 5 types of challenges in learning ESP with Linguistic Competence and University Support being the two most challenging issues for over 90% of students. Meanwhile, the qualitative data showed that the five challenges were intercorrelated and affected each other. Pedagogical implications gained from this study include university officials should provide support to facilitate ESP students with potential challenges and to help them eradicate the challenges. Despite these, several limitations in this study are found including it recruited a relatively small number of participants, and it missed to explore solutions that students have employed to tackle the challenges as it can provide us with meaningful insight into the general overview of ESP courses from students’ perspectives.

Abstract

This study describes how phase composition affects the ability of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) chip-based sensors to detect magnetic labels made of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/chitosan that were synthesized using the co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the synthesized nanoparticles were a mixture of magnetite and maghemite phases. The most intense diffraction peak at 2θ = 35.6° (311) confirmed the presence of the magnetite phase. The addition of chitosan significantly increased the proportion of the maghemite phase from 10% to 25%, with the appearance of an additional peak at 2θ = 33° (221). The modification of Fe3O4 nanoparticles into Fe3O4/chitosan nanocomposites resulted in changes in sensor sensitivity. The GMR sensor successfully detected Fe3O4 and Fe3O4/chitosan magnetic labels within 30 seconds with high sensitivities of 0.746 and 0.761 mV/( g/mL), respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) was also very low at 0.419 and 0.428 g/mL. These findings show that Fe3O4/chitosan nanocomposites integrated GMR chip-based sensors can be a dependable instrument for detecting a variety of biomolecules such as Bovine serum albumin (BSA).

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the specific English-speaking needs of local guides in Tete Batu by exploring the relevant learning topics for their guiding roles and examining the challenges they face in delivering effective services to tourists. This research used a sequential explanatory mixed-method design. In the first phase, questionnaires were distributed to 27 active local guides to identify the most frequently used English topics in their guiding activities. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS 26.00 to determine topic priorities. In the second phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five selected guides to gain deeper insights into the challenges they face and to confirm the questionnaire results. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings revealed that a total of 22 English learning topics are used by local guides in Tete Batu. Among these, 11 topics are frequently used in daily guiding practices, while the other 11 are applied only in specific or situational contexts. In addition, the guides reported several challenges in their work, such as sudden weather changes, limited destination knowledge among new guides, tourists’ entrance tickets, the absence of a Tourist Information Center (TIC), and the lack of learning resources. The findings suggest that English training should focus on practical, topic-based content aligned with real guiding tasks.

Abstract

The use of steel panels in conventional bulletproof vests is no longer relevant to current needs. In addition to being heavy, troop flexibility is disrupted. It is necessary to develop lighter and more reliable composite panels. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of organosilica resin composite panels that were given variations of 5, 7 and 9 layers of woven fiberglass to withstand 9 mm caliber bullets using the NIJ-0101.06 Standard. The results of the firing test showed that the bullets were held back in the 7th and 9th layers. This result shows that this composite is a worthy candidate to replace conventional steel panels in bulletproof vests.

Abstract

This study examines junior high school students’ motivation in developing reading habits and identifies the supporting and hindering factors. A mixed-method design was applied, involving questionnaires completed by 64 students at SMPN 2 Sikur, as well as interviews and classroom observations. Findings revealed that most students demonstrated moderate (39.06%) to high (32.81%) levels of reading motivation, with an overall average of 3.15. Intrinsic factors, such as curiosity, enjoyment, and the desire for knowledge, emerged as the strongest drivers, while extrinsic factors, including encouragement from teachers and parents, played a role but inconsistently. Major obstacles included boredom, limited time, and difficulties in understanding texts, particularly in foreign languages. The school environment, such as poorly maintained libraries and the lack of literacy activities, was also found to be unsupportive. These results indicate that intrinsic motivation is crucial for fostering reading habits, yet it must be reinforced by external support and a conducive learning atmosphere. The study suggests revitalizing school literacy programs

Abstract

It has been argued by scholars that ESP (English for Specific Purposes) has several absolute features which distinguish it from EGP (English for General Purposes). It is not surprising that many EGP teachers face difficulties when teaching ESP classes. This mixed-method study randomly recruited EGP teachers (N=50) to complete an online survey regarding barriers they have experienced in teaching ESP courses. Some of them (N=20) were then invited to participate in interview sessions to discover their strategies in breaking the barriers. The results from quantitative data in the online survey showed that the teachers have been dealing with five different barriers with Subject Knowledge being the most difficult barrier to handle (M=3.14, SD=0.86). Meanwhile, the qualitative findings from the interview process revealed several strategies employed by the teachers to break the barriers appeared to have been intercorrelated and affected to each other. As this finding revealed, university authorities need to provide EGP teachers with some supports (i.e. training programs, financial aid, and relevant textbooks) to minimize potential barriers when teaching ESP classes. Limitations and suggestions for future research are also presented.
