Abstract

The rapid integration of AI-assisted writing tools in English language education has transformed instructional practices while raising unresolved ethical concerns related to academic integrity, student autonomy, and fairness. The research aims to explore lecturers' views regarding the application of AI in writing courses, especially concerning academic integrity, student autonomy, and fairness. Collecting data from 30 English lecturers of Islamic higher educations in Indonesia, this study examines the ethical implications of the AI-assisted writing tools’ integration in English language instruction. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and analyzed thematically using NVivo software. Descriptive statistics such as percentages were used to support the presentation of qualitative themes. The results suggest that numerous lecturers recognize the advances of AI tools such as real-time feedback, improved writing accuracy, and increased efficiency concerns persist about excessive dependence on AI, erosion of critical thinking skills, and algorithmic bias. The study also reveals a lack of institutional guidelines to support ethical AI integration. The study recommends the need for a transformative approach to AI integration that moves beyond technical adoption toward ethically informed pedagogy, institutional policy reform, and the cultivation of lecturers’ and students’ critical AI literacy in higher education writing contexts.

Abstract

According to Bryman’s model, the research procedure involves several systematic stages: (1) identifying theoretical foundations, (2) formulating hypotheses, (3) designing the research, (4) operationalizing variables, (5) collecting data, (6) quantitatively analyzing data, (7) drawing conclusions, and (8) revising or confirming theoretical implications. These steps guided the development and validation of the discovery-learning model throughout the study. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests, expert validation, and student response questionnaires. The pre-test total score was 1,200, while the post-test total score increased to 2,270, indicating a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension achievement. Statistical analysis confirmed that Discovery Learning significantly improved students’ ability to identify main ideas, infer meanings, and comprehend textual details. Validation by material experts indicated that the developed product was valid, effective, and practical for classroom implementation. The students’ responses also reflected positive perceptions of the learning process, particularly in terms of motivation and engagement.  Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the Discovery Learning-based reading comprehension model developed through the quantitative R Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers apply this model to enhance students’ analytical and interpretive reading skills. The researcher used a classroom action research (C.A.R) that was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings; this study used a qualitative approach. The location of this research was eighth-grade students of MTs SKB 3 Menteri Bingkat, with a total of 28 students

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools, commonly known as pesantren, which have been established for a long time, require consistent teaching patterns and must face new problems that arise in adapting, such as the current technological era, without losing the uniqueness or distinctiveness of Islamic boarding schools as their character. Islamic boarding school is a place for deeper religious learning and is believed to bring blessings to students who study religion there. This study continues two previous studies on Islamic boarding schools and multicultural education in Islamic boarding schools by focusing more on the conditions of Islamic boarding schools, which are starting to lose their uniqueness due to the adaptation of government policies, the influence of technology, and responses to the development of demands for students whose diversity changes all the time. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach to solve problems and achieve research objectives. Data collection techniques were carried out through direct observation and in-depth interviews. The data obtained were then analyzed by the triangulation technique. The study results indicate that Islamic boarding schools face internal and external conflicts to maintain their existence in the era of technological change. Islamic boarding schools try not to change their uniqueness but face external demands as they accommodate students from different cultures, regions, languages, and even other countries who study religion. Even Islamic boarding schools cannot adapt to government regulations in determining policies for developing Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia.

Abstract

Bridging the Affective-Linguistic Gap: A Mixed-Methods Exploration of AI-Assisted Speaking Practice and Willingness to Communicate. Objectives: This study examined the effectiveness of AI-assisted learning in enhancing students’ Willingness to Communicate (WTC) and speaking proficiency in an Indonesian higher education context. It also explored students’ perceptions of AI-based tools' support for communicative confidence and readiness during speaking practice. Methods: A convergent mixed-methods design was employed with 60 undergraduate students enrolled in a Business English course. The experimental group received six AI-assisted speaking sessions (100 minutes each) using the SmallTalk2Me platform, while the control group received conventional instruction. WTC and speaking proficiency were measured using parallel pre- and post-tests, and qualitative data were collected through open-ended reflection surveys. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and two-way mixed ANOVA, and qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Findings: Quantitative results showed a significant main effect of time, indicating that students in both groups improved their speaking proficiency and communicative readiness across the semester. However, neither the group effect nor the interaction effect reached significance, suggesting that AI-assisted practice did not produce statistically greater gains than conventional teaching. Qualitative findings, however, revealed perceived affective benefits among AI users, including reduced speaking anxiety, increased confidence, and appreciation of a low-pressure practice environment with instant feedback and opportunities for repetition. Some students also reported challenges, including occasional misrecognition in AI feedback, dependence on stable internet access, and interactions that felt less natural than human communication. Conclusion: The findings indicate that AI-assisted learning did not yield statistically greater gains in speaking proficiency or WTC than conventional instruction. Although qualitative data suggest that some learners perceived changes in their affective experiences during AI-assisted speaking practice, these perceived advantages did not translate into statistically superior outcomes. Overall, the results indicate that the pedagogical impact of AI-assisted learning remains limited within the scope of the present study. Keywords: AI-assisted learning, higher education, language learning, speaking proficiency, willingness to communicate.
