Abstract

This research was aimed to find the appropriate combination of glycerol and tapioca concentration in the production of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed dreg-based biodegradable films.  A two factors experiment was arranged in a Complete Randomized Design with three replications.  The first factor was three levels of glycerol concentration : 0.25%; 0.5% and 0.75%.  The second factor was three levels of tapioca concentration: 5%; 6% and 7%.  The data of visual observation, Fourier transform infra red  analysis, biodegradability and water vapor permeability were analyzed descriptively.  The tensile strength, elongation and solubility of biodegradable films were analyzed using by ANOVA.  The homogenity was use barlett test and the aditivity was use Tukey test.  The data were continue by HSD test at 5% level of significant.  The concentration of glycerol and tapioca significant effects on tensile strength and percent elongation, but not on solubility.  The best characteristics of the Eucheuma cottonii seaweed dreg-based biodegradable film was produced from a combination of 0.25% of  glycerol and 7% of tapioca concentration. The best biodegradabe film had  characteristic of an f 53.92  MPa tensile strength, an 3.647 % elongation, 86.17% solubility, 14 day biodegradability, 6.13 g/(m2/day) water vapor permeability .  The addition of glycerol and tapioca concentration in producting of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed dreg-based biodegradable film has caused the film characteristics more plastic and homogeneous. Abstract

Jambu biji ‘Crystal’ memiliki masa simpan yang singkat dan mudah mengalami kerusakan. Masa simpan buah jambu biji ‘Crystal’ hanya berkisar 2 – 7 hari. Upaya pascapanen yang dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan masa simpan adalah denganaplikasi Aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), pengemasan dengan plastic wrapping, dan penyimpanan suhu rendah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh aplikasi AVG, plastic wrapping, suhu simpan, dan interaksi antara aplikasi AVG,plastic wrapping dan suhu simpan terhadap masa simpan dan mutu buah jambu biji ‘Crystal’. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Pascapanen Hortikultura, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Lampung pada bulan September – Oktober 2014.Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Teracak Sempurna (RTS) dengan tiga ulangan. Rancangan penelitian ini disusun secara faktorial 2 x 2 x 2. Faktor pertama adalah AVG (dengan dan tanpa AVG), faktor kedua adalahplastic wrapping(dengandan tanpa plastic wrapping), faktor ketiga adalah suhu simpan (suhu ruang 26,87 °C dan suhu rendah 21,53 °C). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi AVG tidak mampu meningkatkan masa simpan, kekerasan, susut bobot, °Brix, asam bebas, dan kemanisan pada buah jambu biji ‘Crystal’. Aplikasi plastic wrapping mampu menekan susut bobot, tetapi tidak mampu meningkatkan masa simpan, mempertahankan kekerasan, °Brix, asam bebas, dan tingkat kemanisan buah jambu biji ‘Crystal’. Penyimpanan suhu rendah tidak mampu meningkatkan masa simpan, kekerasan, susut bobot, °Brix, asam bebas, dan kemanisan pada buah jambu biji ‘Crystal’ dan tidak terdapat interaksi antara AVG, plastic wrapping dan suhu rendah dalam meningkatkan masa simpan dan mempertahankan kekerasan, susut bobot, °Brix, asam bebas, dan kemanisan pada buah jambu biji ‘Crystal’.

Abstract

Guava ‘Crystal’ is one of the leading export product of guava. Postharvest problem that occur on guava ‘Crystal’ is the rapid process of ripening and the development of brown spots, so the shelf-life is shorter and causes a decrease in fruit qualities. Damage to fruit can be solved by soaking the fruit in a solution or by coating the fruit, so the rate of respiration and transpiration can be slowed. The material used for soaking the fruit was a plant growth regulators of benziladenine (BA). This research was aimmed at (1) studying the effects of the addition of BA into chitosan coating on the quality and shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’, and (2) obtaining the best concentration of BA added to the chitosan coating to maintain the quality and prolong the shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’. The results showed that (1) the addition of 2.5% chitosan coating was significantly able to prolong the fruit shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’ of 2.83 and 6.12 days longer than control and acetic acid 0.5%, (2) the addition of BA concentrations of 25, 50 and 100 ppm shortened significantly the fruit shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’, but did not influence its qualities, and (3) the using of 0.5% acetic acid as a solvent in 2.5% chitosan did not cause a bad affect, but soaking in 0.5% acetic acid as a main solution adversely affected the fruit qualities and shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’.

Abstract

The research was aimmed at (1) studying the effects of the addition of IAA into chitosan coating on the fruit qualities and shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’, and obtaining the best concentration of IAA added into the chitosan coating to maintain the fruit qualities and prolong the shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’. The treatments were arranged in a factorial 3 x 3 in a completely randomized design with three replications. The first factors were fruits without any treatment but water (K0), acetic acid 0.5% (K1), and 2.5% chitosan (K2). The second factors were the concentrations of IAA in three levels: 0 (A0), 5 (A1), and 10 μM (A2). The results showed that (1) the chitosan coatings of 2.5% concentra-tion was effective in prolonging the fruit self-life of guava ‘Crystal’ 2.56 and 6.45 days longer compared to the control and acetic acid 0.5%, (2) IAA application did not prolong the fruit shelf-life, and did not decrease the fruit qualities, and (3) the addition of 0.5% acetic acid as a solvent in 2.5% chitosan did not cause a bad affect, but soaking in 0.5% acetic acid as a main solution adversely affected the fruit qualities and shelf-life of guava ‘Crystal’ Key words: guava, IAA, chitosan, browning, quality

Abstract

The rice bran and spirulina are Indonesia's local product that have high nutritional content. Their postharvest with processed it to cookie hoped to enhance diversification of rice bran and spirulina in order to increase people's nutritional intake. The purpose of the study was to study the postharvest of rice bran and spirulina to cookies with rich of protein. This research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method and the advanced test Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) with four treatments of cookies was 13.3%, 11.1%, 8.8%, and 6.6% rice bran. The analysis used proximate tests (water content, proteins, fat, and ash) and hedonically sensory tests (color score, aroma, taste, texture, and overall acceptance). The best cookies were 11,1% concentration of rice bran. Their chemical properties were 3.34% water content, 7.26% protein, 37.2% fat, and 47.01% carbohydrates that have filled up the National Standart of Indonesia (SNI) of biscuits whereas ash content 4.31% exceeds the maximum limit. The sensory characteristics of coockie was neutral color, neutral aroma, rather fond taste, liking texture, and overall like. Keywords:   cookies, rice bran, sensory test, spirulina

Abstract

One of the common problems that can be easily found in educational institutions in general, and Islamic boarding schools in particular, is the poor handling of organic and inorganic waste. If waste is handled correctly, it will not only minimize environmental pollution but can also be a source of fundraising. Ulul Albab Islamic Boarding School (UA IBS), which is located in the village of Banjaragung, dist. Jatiagung, reg. South Lampung, Lampung province, Indonesia, was the target partner in organic and inorganic waste management assistance activities. This initial assistance activity, in the form of counseling, was the initial part of the Assistance Program for Organic and Inorganic Waste Management at UA IBS. The main objective of this extension activity was to increase the knowledge of UA IBS managers and residents about integrated organic and inorganic waste management. The method of carrying out this activity was a face-to-face discussion on the concept and technique of integrated waste management to produce a value-added product in the form of compost. The results of this counseling activity were evident from the response of the manager, asatidzah, and students who enthusiastically participated in the activity and increased their knowledge about integrated organic and inorganic waste management to become value-added products.

Abstract

Salah satu masalah Pondok Pesantren Islam Ulul Albab Lampung adalah keinginan untuk memperbaiki pengelolaan sampah di lingkungannya. Kegiatan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan mendampingi pengelola dan warga pondok pesantren untuk melaksanakan pengelolaan sampah secara terpadu dan mengubahnya menjadi kompos. Metode pelaksanaan terdiri dua kegiatan utama, yaitu: (1) penyuluhan dan (2) pendampingan. Hasil evaluasi awal memperlihatkan bahwa jenis sampah yang banyak dibuang adalah plastik dan sampah dapur. Jumlah sampah yang dihasilkan per orang warga adalah 1-2 kg/hari. Evaluasi proses memperlihatkan bahwa pengelola pondok sudah mulai melakukan perbaikan pengelolaan sampah. Hal tersebut antara lain diperlihatkan dengan: (1) penetapan unit dengan dilengkapi SOP dan personalnya, yang khusus ditugasi untuk mengelola sampah, (2) penggantian dan penambahan fasilitas kotak sampah, menjadi model kotak sampah terpisah antara organik dan anorganik.  Evaluasi dalam aspek pengetahuan memperlihatkan bahwa pengetahuan warga pondok pesantren tentang pengelolaan sampah meningkat. Pengetahuan responden meningkat dalam hal: (1) sampah bisa diolah menjadi bernilai tambah, (2) pemilahan perlu dilakukan sejak awal, (3) sampah organik bisa dibuat menjadi kompos, dan (4) proses perlu dikontrol dan bisa dipercepat, agar dihasilkan kompos yang berkualitas dan siap pakai.

Abstract

Button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) have become an attractive agricultural product due to their high nutritional value and use as food. However, since it has a low shelf life, further storage condition needs to be studied. This research investigated the quality changes of button mushrooms under different storage conditions. The mushrooms were stored both in cold and room temperature. The treatments used are different packaging materials such as Styrofoam, polyethylene, and edible coating, where the unpacked mushroom is used as control. Observed parameters are sensory, water content, and weight loss. Button mushrooms with edible coating at cold and room temperature storage were determined as the best treatment that resulted in the lowest decrease in weight loss and water content. Based on this study, the recommended storage condition for button mushrooms is using edible coating in cold temperatures.

Abstract

Biodegradable film berbasis selulosa memiliki potensi dijadikan bioplastik yang mudah terdegradasi di alam yang dibuat dari berbagai bahan terbarukan (renewable sources). Sabut kelapa muda mengandung selulosa sebesar 43,4%. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh konsentrasi pati sagu dan kitosan terhadap karakteristik biodegradable fillm dari selulosa sabut kelapa muda, serta mengetahui interaksi konsentrasi pati sagu dan kitosan dengan karakteristik terbaik sesuai SNI 7818 : 2014. Penelitian ini disusun dengan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok Lengkap (RAKL) dengan dua faktor dan dua ulangan. Faktor pertama adalah konsentrasi pati sagu dengan kode (P) yang terdiri dari empat konsentrasi (0%, 1,5%, 3% dan 4,5%) (b/v). Faktor kedua adalah konsentrasi kitosan denngan kode (K) yang terdiri dari tiga konsentrasi (0%, 1% dan 2%) (b/v). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya pengaruh yang berbeda terhadap karakteristik biodegradable fillm berbasis selulosa sabut kelapa muda. Semua karakteristik, kecuali nilai persen pemanjangan dari biodegradable fillm yang dihasilkan yang sudah memenuhi standar SNI 7818 : 2014, dapat terdegradasi selama 3 minggu dan memiliki ketahanan suhu ruang selama 3 minggu

Abstract

Biodegradable film is an environmentally friendly plastic replacement packaging. Areca fruit peel has the potential to make biodegradable film because it contains high cellulose, which is 34.18%. This study aims to determine the effect of glycerol addition on the characteristics of areca nut peel-based biodegradable film, to determine the effect of CMC on the characteristics of areca nut peel-based biodegradable film, and to determine the interaction of glycerol and CMC to produce the best characteristics of areca nut peel-based biodegradable film. The study was arranged in RAKL with 2 factors and 3 replications. The first factor was the addition of glycerol with concentrations of 0.5% (G1), 1% (G2), and 1.5% (G3), and the second factor was the addition of CMC consisting of concentrations of 1% (C1), 2% (C2), and 3% (C3). Areca fruit peels were dried, mashed, filtered, soaked using 2.5% NaOH, hydrolyzed using 2% H2O2, and mixed with other ingredients. The data obtained were analyzed for variance and further tested with the Least Significant Difference Test (BNT) at the 5% level. The best research results were obtained in the interaction of 1% glycerol and 3% CMC treatment with a tensile strength of 71.87 MPa, percent elongation value of 26.27%, a thickness of 0.32 mm, water vapour permeability of 7.41 g/m2/hour, and biodegradability for 28 days.
