Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance the capacity of local cadres and parents in community-based early childhood education (PAUD) in Lasitae Village, Barru Regency, South Sulawesi. The program was implemented through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, which actively involved coastal communities in planning, training, mentoring, and evaluation. The pre–post test results showed a significant increase in knowledge (55.4→81.5; +46.9%), skills (57.8→84.3; +45.8%), and participatory attitudes (62.3→82.3; +32.0%). Community engagement also rose from an average of 35.4% to 79.0%, marked by the establishment of the local initiative “Kelas Cerita Bahari” (Maritime Story Class) and active collaboration among cadres, teachers, and parents. Learning products such as the storybook Ikan Parappo dan Ombak Ramah (“Parappo Fish and the Friendly Waves”) and the song Marennu’ Ri Lautta (“Joy of the Sea”) strengthened the integration of maritime cultural values into the PAUD curriculum. These results demonstrate that community-based education and the funds of knowledge approach effectively build critical awareness, strengthen social capital, and promote sustainable early childhood education rooted in local culture. The program recommends replicating this model in other coastal villages to strengthen a participatory and socially just education ecosystem.

Abstract

The Coastal Lab for Fishers’ Children program was developed to address limited access to non-formal education, the absence of cultural expression spaces, and low ecological literacy in the coastal community of Lasitae Village, Barru Regency. Activities were conducted from June to September 2025 using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach that positioned children, parents, community leaders, and volunteers as active subjects from planning through reflection. Core interventions included: interactive reading classes and a marine-themed literacy corner (contextual literacy), art workshops/art corner (maritime cultural expression), and conservation education (simple experiments, a Mini Waste Bank, and coastal campaigns). Evaluation employed pre–post tests, participatory observation, attendance logs, and FGDs, analyzed using descriptive–thematic methods. Findings indicate substantial improvements in knowledge (55.4%→81.5%; ↑46.9%), skills (57.8%→84.3%; ↑45.8%), and community participation (35.4%→79.0%; ↑43.6%). In addition, social capital was fostered, marked by increased family logistical support, learning assistance, and participation in beach festivals and children’s art exhibitions (≥20 works). In the ecological domain, the Mini Waste Bank collected approximately 125 kg of sorted waste in three months and spurred household waste segregation adoption (>70% of respondents). The results affirm that a community-based learning model integrating literacy, arts, and conservation within a PAR framework effectively enhances cognitive, affective, and social outcomes while cultivating ownership and sustainability through village policy. The model is recommended for replication in other coastal villages with strengthened local cadres and triple helix partnerships.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of social media on the formation of children's social identity in the city of Makassar in the digital age. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, this research involves children aged 10-15 years who are actively using social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. The results show that social media plays a crucial role in the process of social identity formation through symbolic interaction, where children construct an ideal self-image to gain recognition and validation from their peers. However, alongside these benefits, children also face social pressures to always appear "perfect," which can affect their mental health, leading to anxiety and low self-esteem. The study further reveals that children in Makassar often experience conflicts between local cultural values, which emphasize family and cooperation, and the more individualistic global norms presented through social media. They must navigate between their real-world identities and the identities they are expected to display in the digital world. This research provides insights for parents, educators, and policymakers about the importance of healthy media literacy education and monitoring children’s social media use to help them build more positive and authentic social identities.

Abstract

The social assistance of the Family Hope Program (PKH) is closely related to the cultural poverty that exists in beneficiary women. PKH carries out empowerment by using all the potential, natural resources or even human resources with the support of the government, so that the community becomes more independent. Based on the concept of empowerment theory with the using dimension and the theory of women’s empowerment from the Impact dimension, research data show PKH could not empower women individually or in groups (KPM). This research uses a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques are observation, interviews, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results showed that 32 people could not understand and implement this independence because of education and understanding of the program or training provided. Social capital is a form of strengthening among these components.
