Abstract

Vocabulary development has an important role in English language learning, especially in supporting reading comprehension and oral communication. This research tries to explore the impact of reading English on vocabulary mastery among students and learners in informal housing environments. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 53 participants through a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The questionnaire examined four key variables: interest in reading, reading comfort, vocabulary improvement, and motivation. The findings indicate that most students show high interest and comfort in reading English texts. A significant majority agreed that reading helps them learn and retain new vocabulary. Additionally, reading activities were found to enhance students’ motivation to engage further with English learning. These results support existing literature that extensive reading positively influences vocabulary acquisition. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of promoting English reading habits outside formal education environments. It is recommended that educators, parents, and communities provide accessible reading materials to foster vocabulary growth and language learning motivation among learners. By encouraging reading as a regular practice, even in informal settings, learners can develop a stronger foundation in vocabulary that benefits their overall English proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing whether there was a correlation between students’ learning styles and their reading comprehension achievement. This research applied quantitative method, i.e., a correlation study. There were 20 eleventh-grade students of MAN Bintan participated as subject of this research. The data were collected through questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to know the learning styles the students have, and the test was used to know their reading comprehension achievement. In analyzing the data, the authors used Pearson Product Moment formula to figure out its coefficient correlation. In this research, the authors found that R-values of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles were 0.99, while the value of R-table was 0.468. Therefore, it can be said that there was a significant correlation between students’ learning styles and their reading comprehension achievement. Hence, learning to read as much possible as also pays attention to students’ learning styles.

Abstract

Junior high school students still experience significant difficulties in reading comprehension, particularly when dealing with narrative texts that require the ability to distinguish between main ideas and supporting details. This study aimed to investigate the effect of skimming and scanning strategies on the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 14 Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative approach, the study used a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design involving 24 students. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test consisting of ten essay questions, which was administered before and after the treatment across four instructional sessions. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension following the implementation of skimming and scanning strategies. These strategies effectively assisted students in identifying main ideas and specific information in narrative texts, leading to improved overall comprehension. Therefore, skimming and scanning can be considered effective techniques for enhancing students’ reading comprehension and English literacy.

Abstract

Increasing Production Capacity of Oyster Mushroom Farmers in Karangpring Village through Baglog Two-Level Pressing Technology. The production capacity of baglog manually by oyster mushroom farmers in Karangpring Village, Sukorambi District, Jember Regency is 1,250 baglogs/month with a low average productivity of about 625 kg/4 months which is only done by 2 workers. About 25% of the total baglog made had poor oyster mushroom mycelium growth due to the lack of density of baglog so oyster mushrooms could not be harvested. The problem that can be identified is the lack of experienced workers who can properly compact baglog from F3 oyster mushroom seeds. Oyster mushroom baglog that is less dense causes the growth of oyster mushroom mycelia to be inhibited, resulting in decreased productivity. There needs to be empowerment that aims to provide education on the technique of properly compacting the oyster mushroom baglog while at the same time providing assistance with a two-lever baglog press. The method used in this empowerment activity is training and demonstration of the use of a two-lever baglog press. The result of this service activity is that baglog pressing training is carried out with a two-lever baglog pressing machine for oyster mushroom farmers. With this tool, the baglog compaction process is faster with the right density (100%) where previously 25% of the total baglog that was compacted could not be completely compacted if done manually. The production target of F3 oyster mushroom seeds, which was originally very late, became on time with only 2 workers assisted by a two-lever baglog pressing machine. Empowerment of oyster mushroom farmers through training and the provision of a two-lever baglog press was able to increase the production of F3 oyster mushroom seedlings of 10,500 baglog per month with an increase in production efficiency of 573% compared to before using the tool.
