Abstract

Vocabulary development has an important role in English language learning, especially in supporting reading comprehension and oral communication. This research tries to explore the impact of reading English on vocabulary mastery among students and learners in informal housing environments. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 53 participants through a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The questionnaire examined four key variables: interest in reading, reading comfort, vocabulary improvement, and motivation. The findings indicate that most students show high interest and comfort in reading English texts. A significant majority agreed that reading helps them learn and retain new vocabulary. Additionally, reading activities were found to enhance students’ motivation to engage further with English learning. These results support existing literature that extensive reading positively influences vocabulary acquisition. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of promoting English reading habits outside formal education environments. It is recommended that educators, parents, and communities provide accessible reading materials to foster vocabulary growth and language learning motivation among learners. By encouraging reading as a regular practice, even in informal settings, learners can develop a stronger foundation in vocabulary that benefits their overall English proficiency.

Abstract

Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacum L.) is an agricultural commodity that is widely cultivated by the community. The decline in productivity is due to the uncontrolled use of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides, resulting in the degradation of organic matter. To deal with the problem can use Liquid Organic Fertilizer according to the dose for tobacco plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Liquid Organic Fertilizer treatment of shallot skin waste, banana stem waste, banana peel waste, and coconut coir waste on the growth and yield of tobacco plants. The study used a 1-factor Completely Randomised Design (CRD), with 5 levels, namely P0: Without Liquid Organic Fertilizer (Control), P1: Liquid Organic Fertilizer of shallot skin waste dose (300 ml/plant), P2: Banana stem waste Liquid Organic Fertilizer dose (300 ml/plant), P3: Banana peel waste Liquid Organic Fertilizer dose (300 ml/plant), P4: Liquid Organic Fertilizer ofcoconut fiber waste dose (300 ml/plant). The research variables observed included plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter, root length, root volume, wet weight of leaf production, and dry weight of leaf production. The effect of Liquid Organic Fertilizer application had a very significant effect on the variables of plant height, leaf length, leaf width, root length, leaf wet weight, and leaf dry weight. Coconut coir Liquid Organic Fertilizer treatment (P4) has a tendency to produce the best tobacco plant growth.

Abstract

Watering is one of the keys to cocoa plant growth, where proper watering enhances plant development, while infrequent watering can lead to drought stress. Melatonin can help mitigate the negative impacts caused by drought stress. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates various physiological processes and is believed to enhance plant tolerance to stress while stimulating growth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of melatonin application on the growth of cocoa seedlings under different watering frequency. The study was arranged by randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement, consisting of two factors with three replications. The main plot represents watering frequency of 3 days, 6 days, and 9 days. The subplot represented melatonin concentrations of 0 ?M, 50 ?M, 100 ?M, and 150 ?M. Observational parameters included plant growth based on plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, and leaf area, as well as plant dry weight based on the dry weight of the shoot, roots, and total plant. The results showed that at the 3-day irrigation frequency, melatonin concentrations of 50-100 ?M enhanced plant growth parameters including plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, as well as shoot dry weight and total plant dry weight. At the 6-day frequency, melatonin application up to 150 ?M reduced growth and had no effect on total plant dry weight, but increased root dry weight. At the 9-day irrigation frequency with application of 150 ?M melatonin improved all growth parameters and total plant dry weight. Therefore, melatonin can enhance drought tolerance and promote plant growth under limited irrigation conditions.
