Abstract

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict reached its peak in 2014. Conflict exacerbated by theexistence of war crimes has caused a humanitarian crisis with various socio-economicimpacts and also increased the number of refugees. Since August 2014, Russia has decidedto issue humanitarian aid policy in the conflict. This research analyzes the motives ofRussia's humanitarian aid policy in Donbas using the theory of neoclassical realism. Theresults reveal that the policy is a strategy to increase Russian influence in Ukraine.Anarchic international structure with nations competing for power became an independentvariable in this research. Putin's view on seeing Russia as a major power and Russia's rolein the international world becomes an intervening variable that translates the internationalsituation into the policy. The strategy of humanitarian aid policy with the motive ofmaintaining influence in Ukraine will also have an impact on the increasing position ofRussia in regional countries that can strengthen its status as a global player.

Abstract

The Syrian Civil War is yet another war in a series thereof in the Arab Spring in which the United States and its allies are involved. However, an anomaly has occurred in the military coalition: Canada has significantly decreased the degree of its involvement by stopping its airstrikes within the Western coalition’s campaign. Employing a dual-perspective of classical realism and constructivism, this thesis seeks to find the determining factors to the event using the concepts of transcendent purpose and of norm dynamics. To arrive at the conclusion, this thesis investigates norms projected by Canada in relation to its military alliances, including but not limited to NATO. This thesis finds that, on the one hand, Canada has historically always defended its image by joining military coalitions involving the United States; on the other hand, however, Canada is always reluctant to engage in wars which defy its transcendent purpose, hence the best of both worlds. This thesis concludes that Canada’s foreign policy, in line with its transcendent purpose, constitutes of two factors: the Axworthy norms and legitimacy. In the Syrian Civil War, the United States-led coalition lacks both.

This research aims to find out the reason why the join patrol in the Malacca Strait and Singapore, the Malacca Straits Patrol (MSP) ineffective to maintain security in the Malacca Strait and Singapore. The ineffective can be seen in the 2014 ReCAAP data where in 2014 there were 44 cases of piracy in the Malacca Strait and Singapore. Up 32 cases from 2013 and in 2015 it rose again to 94 cases. In analyzing the case this research will use realist theory. In the realist theory it is stated that in achieving a goal a country needs its national power. But the national power must be transformed into the real power of the country's government. Then for the data this study uses a literature study. Whereas for data analysis this research uses congruent data analysis. The results of this study indicate that the ineffective of the MSP in tackling cases of piracy and piracy is caused by thelimited military power of MSP members to carry out anti-piracy operations. Abstract

Under President Rodrigo Duterte, Philippines pursues the so-called independent foreign policy that’s associated with the decline in its special relationship with the United States. By conducting a case study based on the theory of foreign policy restructuring, this research seeks to explain why the Philippines undertake foreign policy change in a dramatic and fundamental manner. Following Holsti, this research argues that the Philippines’ foreign policy restructuring is a response to non-military threat. The United States’ interference in Duterte’s anti-drug campaign and South China Sea (or SCS) policy constitutes such threat. This research finds that non-military threat led the Philippines to restructure its foreign policy that undermines its bilateral relations with the United States, while improving its relations with non-traditional state partners such as China and Russia.
