Abstract

Soil is one of the most important elements in any civil engineering work, almost all construction activities are related to soil. One of the most common soil problems is expansive soil. This type of soil has a high potential to expand when compared to other types of soil. This research aims to find out how expansive the tested soil is and how it reacts when wetting. The test in this research is experimental, where the expansive soil test is modeled in a rectangular test box with a soil volume of 0.08 m3. The swelling and expansion pressures were measured using proving rings and dials, each totaling five units. The expansive soil used came from Sambungmacan Subdistrict, Sragen Regency, Central Java. The results of the property index test of Sambungmacan soil have a plasticity index percent value of 49.33% and a liquid limit (LL) of 90.16%. The test results showed that the maximum swelling reached 28.3% of the initial soil height of 200 mm and the maximum soil swelling pressure reached 103.23 kPa with a moisture content of 22.62%. The maximum pressure that occurs in each proving ring is at an average moisture content of 31.81%. The results of this study also show the effect of every 1% moisture content will produce a percent soil swelling of 0.40% to 1.08% and the average percentage of swelling pressure that occurs is in the range of 4.65 kPa to 10.26 kPa at every 1% swelling.

Abstract

The usage of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls has grown in popularity over the last few decades and has been widely used in many countries for highway construction, including Indonesia. As a country with a high risk against seismic hazards, a considerable stability analysis against earthquakes for construction must be conducted. This paper is directed to evaluate the static and seismic stability of MSE wall by adopting design criteria from SNI 8460:2017 using the pseudo-static approach with Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) which modelling earthquake as a seismic coefficient, a one-way constant load and dynamic response approach with Finite Element Method (FEM) which modelling earthquake as ground motion, a fluctuating load which varies in time. The stability analysis is performed by considering three failure mechanisms that mostly occurred in MSE Walls; base sliding, tensile overstress, and slope failure. The earthquake load is modelled based 1000-year return period earthquake. Based on the analysis result, the most potential failure mechanism that may occur in the MSE wall is tensile overstress, while the least potential failure is base sliding. The analysis result also shows that the finite element method obtained higher safety factors compared to limit equilibrium, while on the other hand, the remaining two failure mechanisms shows the different result, with the finite element method obtaining lower safety factors than limit equilibrium. Modelling seismic load as an accelerogram indicates that earthquakes have higher impacts on structure stability compared to seismic coefficient, based on seismic safety factor reduction of each method. Although show differences in the value of the safety factor, the minimum safety factor required still complies with both methods.

Abstract

The pullout behavior of ground anchors in sand is governed by inter-particle friction and mechanical interlocking; however, conventional designs often fail to fully mobilize the surrounding failure zone, resulting in limited uplift capacity. To address this limitation, a jack-like ground anchor was developed, incorporating mechanically expandable wings to increase the soil–anchor contact area and enhance shear resistance. Laboratory pullout tests were conducted in a cylindrical steel tank to investigate the influence of relative density (Dr = 27%, 50%, 80%), embedment depth (H = 0.50–1.00 m), and wing opening angle (0°–75°) on the anchor’s performance. Test results interpreted using the Mazurkiewicz method revealed that increasing wing expansion and soil density substantially improved pullout resistance. In medium-dense sand, capacity increased by up to 250%, and in dense sand, up to 220%, depending on embedment depth. At the deepest embedment and densest condition, capacity increased from 6 kN (closed) to 16 kN (fully opened). These findings confirm that integrating geometric adaptability with soil density optimization significantly enhances uplift efficiency, providing a novel and practical solution for improving anchor performance in granular soils.

Abstract

Abstract

The geophysics test using electrical resistivity method has been conducted in the area of UNS Campus to indicate the lithological of subsurface. This method is categorized as a Non-Destructive Test (NDT) due to the data acquisition is done at the ground level and no destruction during the test, which is more advantageous than destructive method such as drilling and SPT test. This study was performed with Schlumberger configuration in three location by electrical resistivity sounding. The acquisition data uses Resistivity meter OYO 2119 McOHM-EL with the track length is 100 m, while the data processing use IPI2Win to get a logarithmic graph between distance and resistivity and Origin to obtain graphic of resistivity and SPT. The result of this study indicates that electrical resistivity has a good correlation with SPT data. The electrical resistivity graph shows a linear increase along with increment of the depth, which is similar to the SPT graph. The slope difference at the first location is 2.44±1,197, the second location is 2.028±0.822, and the third location is 0.622±0.735.

Abstract

Plasticine is an artificial material made from solids such as gypsum, lime, mixed with petroleum jelly or micro wax and acid fat. The properties of plasticine are likely similar to natural clay and is influenced by oil content. The information about mechanical properties of plasticine is still very rare, and as such the study on it is riquired and must be conducted intensively. The preliminary laboratory study has been conducted to understand the behaviour of plasticines. Microwax and petroleum jelly based plasticines were utilised with the variation of oil content, whereas kaolin clay with the variation of water content is utilised as a reference material. The study is focusing on the stress-strain behaviour for both microwax and petroleum jelly based plasticines compared to the stress-strain behaviour of kaolin clay. This paper reports the result of preliminary investigation regarding the use of plasticine as an alternative artificial material for substitution of clay in soil modeling. Some engineering properties from unconfined compression strength (UCS) test and hand penetrometer are shown. The result indicates that the stress-strain behaviour of plasticine resembles the stress-strain behaviour of kaolin clay. The plasticine is suitable as a substitute cohesive material and it has a potential to be utilised for geotechnical material modelling in the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Road infrastructure issues need great attention, considering that this was a link and a cross-economy between one region and another. Damage to the pavement (pavement) would have fatal consequences for the development of an area and an increase in financial needs. Therefore, it was necessary to strengthen a solid road body so that it was able to strengthen the road and be comfortable for traffic loads to pass. Damage to the road body was a major concern in road maintenance efforts. This was due to several very complex problems in terms of the materials used, work implementation, traffic loads passing through the road body, and existing natural conditions. This research studies and analyses the behavior of dynamic-loaded rigid pavements. This load was a traffic load model, and the behavior was reviewed in a small-scale laboratory model. The expected result was to know the model’s behavior with and without rigid pavement reinforcement on both sandy and soft soils, namely in the form of analysis and the ability of the reinforcement to accept traffic loads. This research showed that the plate test model shows that multiple plate thickness supports plate stiffness. The cakar reinforcement plate affected the stiffness of the plate. The deflection value due to loading on the 3-layer plates (6.3 mm thick) was comparable to the 1-layer plate (2.1 mm) with cakar. FEM analysis can be performed to predict deflection due to loading in the center of the plate, and this value was very close to the results of the laboratory small-scale loading test. The CBR value used to calculate the deflection was closest to the real condition, namely the value before loading 0.2 kN and after loading 0.8 kN.
