Abstract

Idiomatic expressions are expressions whose meanings cannot be derived from their literal meaning. Thus, it is viewed as a challenging part for EFL learners in either understanding or practicing them. However, using them in oral spoken adequately signifies that someone is a proficient English user. This research is carried out to depict the learner's application of idiomatic expressions in spoken English. It is performed to address the accompanying examination questions: (1) Do EFL learners of the English Department in IAIN Takengon use idiomatic expressions in speaking? (2) What type of idioms do they produce in speaking? (3) What is the most frequently used idiom type in their speaking?. 20 students' recordings were collected and analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The result shows that the learners use idiomatic expressions. The learners produced only three types of idiomatic expressions, namely phrasal verb idiom, tournures idiom, and irreversible compound idiom. Of all, phrasal verb idiom is the most frequently used. It is suggested that the learners are encouraged to be exposed to English more often to apply more idiomatic expressions in their speaking.

Abstract

This study was carried out to overcome the difficulties in reading comprehension encountered by high school students. The SQ6R method was offered as the appropriate method to solve the problem in this school. It is aimed at assisting students to get reading information and its meaning. This research utilized quantitative method, i.e. experimental research to find the answer as to whether the SQ6R method could increase students' reading comprehension. The sample of this study was 30 students, equally distributed in both experimental group (class IX3) and control group (class IX2), of a junior high school in Central Aceh, Indonesia. The data of the study was gathered by conducting two tests (pre and post with the treatment in between) which was further analyzed by using t-test. The results indicated that although both classes increased their scores in the post-test, the scores of experimental class who experienced the SQ6R method in their learning increased significantly (39 – 84) and outperformed those in the control class (33 – 63). Furthermore, the result of t-test was found to be 13.53 which was higher than t-table of 1.4 at a significance level of 0.05. This signified that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, SQ6R method could increase the students’ reading comprehension. Based on the results, the teachers are recommended to apply this method in their teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing errors of verb tense usage found in the learners’ writing production. The second semester students of English Department, STAIN Gajah Putih Takengon enrolled in Writing II course were taken as the participants in this investigation. Eight narrative paragraphs were scrutinized closely to detect errors pertaining to verb tense. In this case, a classification of errors proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982 in Ellis and Barkhuizen, 2005) called Surface Strategy Taxonomy is applied. It comprises four sorts of errors: addition, omission, misformation, and misordering. The finding reveals that the learners’ errors encompass three types of four aforementioned above, i.e. addition, omission, and misformation. Among those, misformation is found to be the most prevalent type commited by the learners, as many as 62 errors making up 72.94 % of all. It was subsequently followed by omission and addition which were 13 errors (15.29 %) and 10 errors (11.77 %) successively. Whereas misordering was not identified among the learners’ errors on paragraph composition. Eventually, a pedagogical implication as a result of this research was made. English instructors are expected to accentuate more on likely-to-produce-errors items to the learners prior to composing a paragraph.

Abstract

Gaining comprehension when reading has become a challenge for students in EFL context. The present study was undertaken to deal with the hardship that EFL learners confront in their reading class. A strategy called fix up was considered effective in coping with the issue. This research employed a quantitative approach with an experimental design involving 40 students from a senior high school in Takengon, Aceh Tengah, Indonesia. They were equally divided into experimental and control groups, each consisting of 20 students. The instrument utilized here was a test comprising 25 multiple-choice questions, which has passed through validity and reliability test. The scores were analyzed by utilizing a t-test. The results showed that the learners in experimental group performed a much more significant increase compared to those in the control group. In addition, t-score was found greater than the t-table (6, 66 > 2,024) at a significance level of 0, 05 with df (38) suggesting that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. It can be concluded that the fix-up strategy affects the students’ reading comprehension, and it is recommended that other English instructors apply this strategy to create more active learners and to provide a better learning circumstance.

Abstract

Due to English's global significance, it indirectly affects Indonesia's education system. In this area of study, most scholarly publications speak English. All Indonesian nationals are required by law to take English classes. Many students have trouble understanding the grammatical rules of English because they are so different from those of their native language, Indonesian. The most important distinctions are those of tense and aspect. Many students struggle with grammar because of this. This analysis aims to determine which tenses and aspects are used in the script for "Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and which are employed most often. This research makes use of content analysis and qualitative descriptive methods. Data collection made use of record-keeping. The data was examined using the Miles and Huberman dynamic model. After the data has been compiled and presented, inferences can be made. The data shows that there are nine distinct permutations of tense and aspect. There are 33 current tenses, 37 past tenses, 6 future tenses, 35 progressive tenses, 3 past progressive tenses, 3 perfect tenses, 1 perfect tenses, 2 future perfect tenses, and 2 present perfect tenses. The present progressive is only represented by 35 occurrences, while the plain past tense is represented by 37. There are twelve permutations of tense and aspect, nine of which are used here. There is no distinction between past and future occurrences in the progressive tenses (future, past, and future perfect).

Abstract

Writing has been a very challenging skill for students especially for eight grade learners of one Islamic junior high school in Central Aceh. This research was conducted to see whether the picture and picture-learning model could increase the students’ capability in writing. To investigate it, the quantitative approach, i.e., experimental method was employed. The population of this study was four classes, totaling 124 students. By using random sampling, classes VIII1 and VIII3 consisting of 30 and 32 students, respectively, were selected as the sample of this research. To collect the data, both pretest and posttest were given to the students before and after applying the picture-learning model. The results showed that the learners performed better after the intervention for both groups; however, the experimental group made better improvement in their writing (post-test = 84; pre-test = 60). In addition, the t-test also displayed that t-test (3.603) was higher than t-table (3.0) indicating that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. The conclusion, therefore, was that the picture and picture-learning model increased the students’ writing ability.
