Abstract

The existence of people living around the buffer zone in recent times has led to negative interactions in the form of conflicts between humans and wild animals, one of which is with the Sumatran tiger. The purpose of this study was to identify the sources of livelihood for the community in the buffer area of the Batang Gadis National Park (BGNP), and calculate the total economic losses suffered by the community due to human and wildlife conflicts in the buffer area of the national park. This study used a survey method, data were collected through interviews with selected respondents based on purposive sampling method with snowball technique. Data analysis is done by descriptive analysis. The results of the research show that the source of livelihood for the people living around the TNBG area is mostly farmers. The community's perception of the disturbance of wild animals and Sumatran tigers in Hutabaringin Julu Village and Bangkelang Village is that some people consider wild animals or Sumatran tigers to be beneficial to them in the balance of nature, and some others consider wild animals to be no useful in life because they are considered to disturb community plantation lands. The tiger conflict caused an economic loss of IDR 14,400,000 in Hutabaringin Julu Village and Bangkelang Village of IDR 35,280,000.

Abstract

Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) currently face various threats, such as deteriorating habitat quality and quantity due to forest conversion, exploitation, forest encroachment, and increased poaching. Bukit Mas Village, Besitang District, Langkat Regency is one of the villages that are quite close to the Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) area. This study aims to analyze community perceptions of human and Sumatran tiger conflicts (HTC). This study used a descriptive quantitative method. The respondents were taken using a non-probability sampling technique. Criteria were designed with purposive sampling type. The results of the study explain that the existence of conflict can affect people's perceptions of the existence of Sumatran tigers. The community considers tigers to be not beneficial to people's lives because tigers disturb public order. Age and latest education do not correlate (relationship) with community perceptions. Due to the Asymp. Sig values of 0.772 and 0.625. This value is greater than the significance level of 0.05

Abstract

Bahorok is a sub-district in the Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP), LangkatRegency, North Sumatra Province. Bahorok has buffer villages directly adjacentto the national park such as Timbang Lawan Village, Batu Jongjong Village, andLau Damak Village. These three villages have many interesting tourist attractions,such as natural scenery, rivers, mountains, waterfalls, caves, and wildlife. Theprominent attractions in the villages are the beautiful landscape and wildlife. Thisstudy aims to determine the potential of natural tourism and develop a strategy fortourism in the buffer villages of GLNP, Bahorok Resort. The methods used in thisstudy are observation and interview with purposive sampling. Data was analyzedusing guidelines for developing destination and SWOT analysis. The results ofthis study show that the potential of tourism objects in buffer villages is feasibleto be developed, and increases business opportunities. The three villages arefeasible to be developed as new destinations. Tourism feasibility of the threevillages varies, in Timbang Lawan Village 72.75%, Batu Jongjong Village79.88% and Lau Damak Village 73.58%. Furthermore, they have differences indeveloping tourism strategies based on the specific internal and external factor.The progressive strategy for Timbang Lawan Village (quadrant I), a changingstrategy for Lau Damak Village (quadrant III), and a diversification strategy forBatu Jongjong Village (quadrant II). It shows how important the role of buffervillages at Bahorok Resort in developing tourism in the future.
