Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance tank cleaning process on tankers to prevent cargo contamination, maintain cargo quality, and ensure crew safety. MT. Marina Prosperity, a chemical/oil tanker, uses the Butterworth system as the primary method for tank cleaning at every cargo change. However, in practice, technical and operational constraints are still found that affect the results of tank cleaning. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through direct observation on the ship, interviews with the Chief Officer and Boatswain, and documentation studies in the form of log books and SOPs. Data were analyzed by focusing on three aspects, namely work efficiency, work safety, and operational procedures for using Butterworth. The results show that the use of Butterworth can increase time and energy efficiency compared to manual methods, with an average cleaning time of 2–4 hours per tank depending on the type of cargo. From a safety aspect, Butterworth reduces the need for crew to enter the tank, thereby reducing the risk of exposure to chemicals and hazardous atmospheres. However, work effectiveness and safety are greatly influenced by the condition of the equipment, the stability of water pressure, and the crew's discipline in implementing the SOP. On several occasions, steps such as nozzle cleaning, manual mopping, and safety meetings were not consistently performed, resulting in residual load in certain areas. With routine equipment maintenance, close supervision, and ongoing crew training, Butterworth can be optimized to produce more effective, safe, and standards-compliant tank cleaning process.

Abstract

Operational activities on board a ship constitute a work environment with a high risk of workplace accidents. One of the challenges that is still frequently encountered relates to the crew’s suboptimal compliance with safety procedures and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), resulting in a significant potential for accidents. This study focuses on evaluating the implementation of workplace safety equipment on ships as well as examining crew behavior in support of workplace accident prevention efforts. A qualitative approach was applied in this research, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection methods during a 12-month period of sea training aboard the KM. Kelud. Research findings indicate that the occupational safety system has been supported by the availability of safety equipment, standard operating procedures, and the regular conduct of safety meetings. However, its implementation in the field has not been consistent, as it remains influenced by individual awareness levels, established work habits, factors related to workplace comfort, and supervision that has not yet been optimized. Consequently, the use of workplace safety equipment has not been fully effective in reducing workplace accident rates, where human factors remain the most dominant cause. This situation highlights the need to strengthen safety culture through continuous training, improve the effectiveness of supervision, and enforce strict penalties to foster discipline among the ship’s crew.

Abstract

The article “Family as the Basis of National Education: An Islamic Perspective” emphasizes that the family is the first and foremost educational institution with a strategic role in instilling values of faith, morality, and nationalism from an early age. Amid the challenges of globalization and the moral crisis facing the younger generation, the family functions as a madrasah ula (the first school) that shapes children’s character through role modeling, affection, communication, and the habituation of noble values. In the Islamic perspective, national education cannot be separated from religious teachings, as both complement each other; values such as justice, brotherhood (ukhuwah), tolerance, consultation (musyawarah), and social responsibility are not only moral pillars but also foundations for national unity. Through parental example, children learn love for the homeland, social responsibility, respect for diversity, and the spirit to contribute to community life. Family-based education that integrates Islamic and national values provides a strong foundation for creating a generation with noble character, religious commitment, and nationalism, while also caring for the integrity of the nation. In conclusion, the family serves not only as a place of nurturing but also as a center for shaping identity, character, and national spirit that is harmonious, inclusive, and relevant for building a just, prosperous, and civilized society.
