Abstract

Japanese language learners at Universitas Andalas face significant challenges in achieving oral proficiency, particularly spontaneous speaking fluency and confidence. To address this, the present study investigates the implementation of the ippunkan supīchi (one-minute speech) method in Japanese kaiwa (conversation) courses. This quantitative and qualitative study utilized a questionnaire to evaluate student perceptions across ten key indicators of speaking competence, administered to 34 Japanese literature students who practiced weekly one-minute speeches for seven consecutive weeks. Results demonstrated unanimous improvement in confidence and spontaneous speaking ability (100%), with 85.3%–94.1% of participants reporting enhanced vocabulary retention, grammatical accuracy, reduced speaking anxiety, and faster response times. The findings substantiate the method's efficacy in fostering cognitive processing efficiency (e.g., lexical retrieval) and affective outcomes (e.g., self-efficacy) in L2 Japanese speakers. This study contributes empirical evidence for task-based language teaching approaches that combine time constraints with repetitive practice to optimize speaking proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the psychological aspects of the main character in Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel Musashi, using Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory. Using qualitative descriptive methods and a literary psychology approach, this study analyses how Musashi’s life struggles illustrate his efforts to fulfil the five levels of human needs, namely physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The results show that Musashi’s character development is a complex and gradual process, beginning with his efforts to survive physically after the war, his search for moral purpose through the guidance of Takuan Soho, his inner conflict regarding his relationship with Otsu, and concluding with his search for recognition through the battles he fought. The culmination of this achievement is when Musashi realizes that the true victory is not defeating opponents but controlling oneself. This understanding underwent a comprehensive psychological change in line with the fulfilment of needs at each level of Maslow’s hierarchy. With a literary psychology approach, Musashi is not only understood as a story revolving around battle and honour, but also as an existential narrative about a person struggling to achieve self-recognition. This research offers a deeper insight into the relationship between psychology and literature, demonstrating that fictional characters created by authors can illustrate the dynamics of personality that humans also experience in general.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of faith conflict experienced by Kakure Kirishitan as depicted in Martin Scorsese's film Silence (2017), which portrays the persecution of Catholic Christians in seventeenth-century Japan during the Tokugawa period. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies intrinsic literary analysis—particularly literary psychology—to explore the inner conflicts of three Catholic priests: Cristóvão Ferreira, Sebastião Rodrigues, and Francisco Garupe. An analysis of mise-en-scène complements the study to evaluate how cinematographic elements such as lighting, costume, and acting construct a historical atmosphere of religious oppression. The findings reveal distinct responses to faith conflict among the three priests. Ferreira and Rodrigues experience profound moral dilemmas between preserving doctrinal integrity and saving the lives of persecuted converts, ultimately choosing apostasy while maintaining their faith secretly as Kakure Kirishitan. In contrast, Garupe remains steadfast in his beliefs and decides to martyr himself. His analysis demonstrates that inner conflict is central to the narrative, shaped by guilt, the silence of God, and ethical responsibility toward others. Furthermore, cinematographic techniques effectively reinforce psychological tension and historical realism, strengthening the film's role as a medium of historical memory. This study contributes to literary-historical and film studies by illustrating how cinematic adaptations of historical narratives function as critical reflections on faith, power, and resistance under religious persecution.
