Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of politeness strategies used by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie. The objectives of study are to find out type of politeness strategies used by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie, to derive the dominant type of politeness strategy that is produced by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie and to elaborate the context of politeness strategies used by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie. The data are dialogue of the main character in a letter to Juliet movie. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design and only focused on the main character. The research findings are positive and negative politeness strategies. There are fifteen strategies of positive politeness and twelve strategies of negative politeness in a letter to Juliet movie. The most dominant politeness strategy uttered by the main character in a letter to Juliet movie was positive politeness strategy. Among them is intensify interest to hearer is dominant type of positive politeness strategy. This type of politeness strategy occurred since character mostly just shared about her experience and inform to other.   Keywords: Politeness strategies, positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies

Abstract

One aim of this article is to show through a concrete example how metaphors used in advertisement. The illustrative example is taken from the Cosmopolitan magazine. Central to the analysis of proper meanings of advertisement are the journalistic practices that contain the production of metaphor; i.e. the symbols, the words, or color of different values. Ten advertisements were interpreted by 103 students, and it was found that the use of symbols outnumbered the words, particularly those symbolized the nature. Keywords: advertisement; metaphor

Abstract

Abstract One aim of this article is to show through a concrete example how speech function and speech role used in Holy Quran. The texts were taken from the verses in Juz Amma of Holy Quran. All surahs in Juz Amma of Holy Quran were taken as the data by using dexcriptive qualitative method. The result shows that the six types of process are found in the verses in Juz Amma of Holy Quran. Material Process  is dominantly used because many surahs in Juz Amma of Holy Quran contain about action, activity, things that are doing or happened physically, bodily, and materially.   Keywords: Juz Amma of Holy Quran, process, transitivity

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research aims to get information of sociolinguistics about code mixing in a film titled From Bandung with Love uttered by the characters. The characters use some types of code mixing. The main type is Intra Lexical Code Mixing. The results of this research are (1) There are three types of code mixing in the film, (2)The most type which has big effect is Lexical (3) Lexical code mixing as the dominant type shows that the teenagers in Indonesia like to mix their language per word to show that they are educated and modern.       Keywords : Sociolinguistics, code mixing, From Bandung with Love

Abstract

Abstract One aim of this article is to show through a concrete example how language style used in movie. The illustrative example is taken from the dialogue of King’s Speech movie. Central to the analysis proper form of dialogue in King’s Speech movie that contain of language style; i.e. frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. 339 dialogue were interpreted by actor, and it was found that the use of language style.   Keywords: movie; language style

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of code switching and reasons why people switch their language in social media Twitter. The objectives of study are to find out contextual type and the grammatical type of code-switching which is mostly used in social media Twitter and to explain audience’s reasons switch the code in social media Twitter. The research conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The primary data collected by tweets from the timelines of Twitter users, the secondary data were the questionnaires to collect information about audiences’s reason switch the code on Twitter. The result showed that the dominant type of grammatical types that used by the  user is Inter sentential code switching, then it is followed by tag code switching type and intra sentential code switching. The dominant type of contextual types that used by the user is metaphorical code switching and it is followed by situational code switching. There are eight reasons why people switch the code in the social media Twitter, the most common reasons for people switch the languange is due to the lack of equivalent lexicon in the languanges. Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this article are to find out the types of metaphor, and to describe the implication of the most dominant type of metaphor used in the Invictus film. By using documentary technique, six selected scene were taken randomly from the script, there were fifty dialogues uttered by Nelson Mandela used as the sample. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative technique. It was found are six types of metaphor used in Invictus film and the most dominant type of metaphor is Subjective Metaphor. This implies that the films tends to show the portray of Nelson Mandela as the President of South Africa who is subjectively in constructing his ideas, opinions and message in the film about sport and apartheid.
