Abstract

Housing is one of basic needs in modern society driven by the population growth and limited land resource. Housing for low-income segment has minimum standard features which difficult personalization. Nevertheless, people have means to create personal identity symbol on facade material to show personalization in the simplest way. Purpose of this research is to investigate diversity symbol type created by housing resident despite personalization limited constraint. Transdiciplinary housing theory (Salama et al, 2017) is served as basic framework of this research. Observations conducted in five housing in Palembang discover fewer collectivism symbols and many individualism symbols. Thus author revised the transdiciplinary model and create housing social architecture model for better descriptions on how housing dweller responses to housing architecture and defines their cultural identity. Instead of tune down culture symbolism, mass housing exhibits more basic roots of this symbolism.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Sustainable development has become a significant issue nowadays. The passive cooling technique is used instead of the active cooling technique for less operation energy consumption. Previous research has identified urban heat island (UHI) phenomena in big cities because of climate change. Efforts have been made to reduce and mitigate this phenomenon, and the passive cooling technique is one of the efforts that count off. A comprehensive literature review has yet to highlight passive cooling techniques to overcome UHI. This paper will systematically review research on passive cooling techniques as UHI mitigation. The result indicates the pros and cons of various passive cooling techniques considering every previously identified factor that will help every stakeholder to reduce and mitigate UHI using passive cooling techniques.

Abstract

The province of Bangka Belitung Islands requires a high-quality human resource pool in the field of shipping and nautical studies. To support the education and competency development of human resources in the maritime sector, the construction of the Politeknik Pelayaran Bangka Belitung (POLTEKPEL BABEL) is deemed necessary. POLTEKPEL BABEL is envisioned to be a sustainable school building, characterised by its lower consumption of energy, water, and resources, as well as reduced waste generation compared to conventional buildings. This research focuses on the implementation of the green building concept in the design of POLTEKPEL BABEL. The study employs a quantitative descriptive method and a design method that integrates systems with existing ecological processes on-site, including orientation, wall-to-window ratio (WWR), the cumulative value of Roof Thermal Transfer Value (RTTV) and Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV), as well as technical planning assessments for green buildings. Both primary and secondary data are utilised in this research. The findings indicate that the design of POLTEKPEL BABEL incorporates the principles of green building by considering various indicators outlined in the technical guidelines for green building assessment. These indicators encompass site management, energy usage efficiency, indoor air quality, the use of environmentally friendly materials, and waste management. Consequently, the implementation of these principles in the design of POLTEKPEL BABEL is expected to support sustainable development encompassing environmental, energy, and occupant well-being aspects.

Abstract

The development of new urbanism paradigm in the world today, has been reminded of the importance of vernacular architecture in urban planning.. It would be advantageous for areas with high ethnic diversity as South Sumatra. This study aims to inventory the vernacular house typology in South Sumatra. Methods of study is to examine the vernacular houses of all ethnicities in South Sumatra (29 ethnicity) plus two ethnic from neighboring provinces (Kubu and Lambak). The study found 18 different types of houses, and also found that the typology of the roof consists of a limas roof, pelana roof, and a perisai roof. The variety of roof reflects the high ethnic mobilization in South Sumatra. Even so, as a result of acculturation that occurs in these dynamics, the variety is found only on the shape of the roof, while the other part of the building does not have a clear marker of difference. Implications of the New Urbanism presented in the design of contemporary urban planning in South Sumatra.

Abstract

Abstract

As one of the educational institutions, pesantren have significant potential to contribute to sustainable development, both within the local context where they operate and in the broader environment. The aim of this study is to measure the sustainability index of pesantren and develop a typology based on space utilization characteristics to generate improvement recommendations that will enhance the sustainability index. The researcher formulated the sustainability index concept based on three parameters: the proportion of low-albedo roofs (white roofs), the proportion of trees (green space), and the proportion of water bodies (blue space) relative to the total land area. Additionally, data was collected on areas of buildings with non-white roofs (orange space) and open land areas (gray space). Dimensional data for the five parameters were obtained using Google Earth satellite images for 46 pesantren members of the Ecopesantren program, located across Sumatra and Java. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using the Wald method to categorize the pesantren and recommend strategies for enhancing their sustainability index. The analysis revealed that none of the pesantren had a sustainability index above 50%, primarily due to the limited use of white roofs and blue spaces. Five distinct clusters were identified: developed pesantren, pesantren toward development, pesantren with space competition, green pesantren, and compact pesantren. Specific recommendations for improving sustainability were proposed for each cluster type.

Abstract

The process of building traditional houses requires sizes of activities to determine dimensions of  spaces. This study seeks to reveal how the activities of occupants relate to the dimensions of space in the vernacular society in Indonesia. It uses a literature study approach by reviewing various studies on vernacular housing in Indonesia. A total of 18 vernacular houses were reviewed and compared to find common relations between the activities and dimensions of the vernacular space. It was found that there were high variations in various placements, uses, and relations between activities and human living spaces, influenced by anthropometric factors, location, and socio-cultural factors. There are a very flexible space utilization and very rigid space utilization and between the two. This finding is expected to be a material for the development of simple, mass-built houses considering the habits of local residents in their activities.
