Abstract

This article focuses on conflict resolution in Aceh, Indonesia, and Bangsamoro, Phillipines, as a comparative study. The two different regions have at least two similar characteristics: both are recognised by central government as widely autonomous provinces compared to other provinces, and both have same problems with revolutionary groups that attempt to withdraw from central government. This qualitative research aims to examine conflict resolution process and result in both local governments. The main objective is to identify similarities rational choice (survival, security, economy/welfare, prestige, and influence) especially how political elites would still feel enjoy to conduct those agreements in both regions. The findings confirm that both GAM (Aceh) and MILF (Bangsamoro) have similar political preference sequence, but such of MNLF factions still continues their military movements. It is argued that Aceh-Indonesia conflict resolution could not automatically be applied in the Bangsamoro-Philippines issue.

Abstract

This book provides a thorough analysis of the dynamics of international relations between the United States and China during the first term of Joe Biden's presidency. In his book, Cipto makes the case that the United States has to be more cautious while preserving its relationship with China, particularly during the Biden administration when it is important to protect both domestic and global interests. As the subsequent president of the United States, Joe Biden exercised prudence when dealing with China in a new rivalry. Biden has specific demands to improve the role of the United States in the international world after being considered to have experienced a setback in the era of Donald Trump's leadership with his "America First" policy. In addition, Donald Trump openly launched a trade war strategy with China which increased tensions between the two countries. The efforts made by Joe Biden can be likened to the efforts of “Rambo”, a fictional character who represents United States patriotism in “cleaning up” all forms of international threats. But this time what they faced was not an ordinary threat, this special thread can be reimagined as a dragon that had just awakened and could pounce at any time and turn terrifying. Therefore, instead of using firearms blindly as the films illustrate, Rambo must be able to dance beautifully to face the rise of the dragon.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of the method local integration of ex-East Timorese residents in the refugee settlement area of Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The author uses the Functional Theory by Talcott Parsons and the Local Integration concept by UNHCR as set out in Refugee Convention 1951. While related to research method, the author uses qualitative methods with descriptive approaches and secondary data. The results showed that the implementation of local integration of ex-East Timorese was not as expected. This is due to obstacles in every level of the local integration process, both related to legality, economy and socio-culture. Social harmony between local residents and ex-refugees isn’t always become the commitment of the central and regional governments, but requires the role of the informal sector, especially local communities at refugee settlement areas. The process of local integration that is not going well can lead to social conflict in the community.
