Abstract

Food security of the Indonesian population is threatened because climate change has the potential to reduce technical efficiency of rice production. To adapt and reduce these negative impacts, farmers implement climate change adaptation strategies. This study aims to determine how the effect of climate change adaptation on the technical efficiency of rice farming. Research data was collected through interviews with 112 rice farmers in Sleman Regency. We carried out two stages of analysis, namely stochastic frontier analysis to determine the production function and efficiency level, and tobit regression to determine the effect of adaptation strategy on technical efficiency. The findings indicate that most farmers use short-lived varieties and apply two types of adaptation strategies in one growing season. By increasing the number of adaptation strategies, the technical efficiency of rice farming will increase. These results have important policy implications for increasing the adoption of adaptation strategies by farmers. The government and farmers should collaborate to formulate adaptation strategy policies to provide farmers with a choice of adaptation strategies. Keywords: adaptation, agricultural development, climate change, rice farming, technical efficiency

Abstract

Sorghum as an alternative commodity to substitute rice and other cereal crops, showing to its high adaptability to arid environments and limited rainfall. However, sorghum production has witnessed a decline, leading to a reduction in sorghum supply, thus impacting the provision of food and raw materials for industries. This research aims to ascertain farmers' decisions in selecting new superior varieties (NSV) and whether the utilization of NSV enhances farmers' productivity and income. The study was conducted in Patihan Village, Lamongan Regency, with a sample size of 55 sorghum farmers. Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the factors influencing farmers in adopting new superior sorghum varieties. The findings indicate that factors influencing farmers in utilizing NSV include education, land size, farming experience, participation in farmer groups, and harvest orientation. Although the utilization of NSV does not increase sorghum farmers' productivity, the income of sorghum farmers adopting NSV has increased.

Abstract

The operations of the Coastal Fishing Port Technical Services Unit (Port-TSU henceforth) in Pasongsongan face several challenges that obstruct port activities. First, the anchorage has become more shallow due to the sedimentation resulting from the Angsono River’s erosion. Second, the limited area of the anchoring pool makes it difficult for fishing boats to anchor. Third, the shipping lanes, just like the anchorage, have become more shallow due to sedimentation from the mouth of the Angsono River. Fourth, the limited loading and unloading docks result in long queues, which not only delay ship activities in the queue but also reduce the quality of catches. Fifth, the damaged roads and drainage systems around the port pose a challenge to the loading and unloading activities. Considering these challenges, this research aims to evaluate Port-TSU facilities in Pasongsongan, understand the causes of Angsono River sedimentation, and formulate development strategies for the Port-TSU. The results show that the condition of Port-TSU facilities is generally adequate according to Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Regulation No. 08 of 2012. However, the rapid erosion of the Angsono watershed caused the shallowing of the anchor pool and shipping lanes. The underlying causes are monoculture farming practices, lack of agroforestry implementation, and the absence of agricultural terracing systems. The development strategy recommendation is to dredge the anchorage and shipping lanes and extend the pier. Other recommendations include implementing watershed management through agroforestry and terracing systems in the Angsono River watershed to minimize erosion and increase loading and unloading capacity by adding a conveyor belt to accelerate processes and reduce ship queues.

Abstract

Introduction: This study examines the food consumption patterns and food security status of corn farming households in Paterongan Village, Galis Subdistrict, Bangkalan Regency, Madura Island, Indonesia. The research is conducted within the context of the low food security levels in Indonesia, despite the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since 2015. Paterongan Village serves as an interesting case study due to its high corn production but also a high poverty rate, which raises concerns regarding household-level food security. This study aims to identify the factors influencing food security among corn farmers in the area. Methods: This research uses a descriptive quantitative approach, collecting data through interviews and questionnaires with 76 female corn farmers. The 24-hour food recall technique was applied to assess food consumption patterns and calculate the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS). Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing food security. Results: The findings indicate that the food consumption patterns are relatively limited in diversity, with most households primarily consuming cereals, vegetables, oils, legumes, and fish. The average HDDS score is 7.1, with 67% of households classified as food insecure. Conclusion: The logistic regression analysis identified education level, household income, and the utilization of home gardens as significant factors that improve food security.

Abstract

Corn production in Bragung Village, Guluk-Guluk Subdistrict, tends to be fluctuating, but the consumption of corn continues to increase. The fluctuation in corn production is not necessarily due to climate change, which is a hindering factor to achieve 80% of the national corn production contribution. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase corn production by considering social capital through bonding, bridging, and linking roles. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of social capital on corn productivity in Bragung Village, Guluk-Guluk Subdistrict, Sumenep Regency, Madura. Data collection was carried out through observation and interviews by filling out questionnaires. The research method used is ordinary least squares analysis (OLS) on 71 female farmers selected through simple random sampling. The analysis results show that factors that have a significant and positive influence on corn productivity are bonding, education, and experience. Factors that do not have a significant impact are bridging, linking, age, and sales quantity. Based on the research results, efforts that can be made to increase corn productivity include strengthening relationships, especially in corn farming, such as discussing and helping each other.

Abstract

An increasing amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) affects the planet and people. As a primary contributor to climate change, CO2 has been a subject of discussion among researchers. Many have been studying the complex relationship and impact of CO2. However, a study examining the influence of increased CO2 emissions on human subjective well-being is limited. This study aims to fill the gap by utilizing a sample of 9,724 Southeast Asians from the Seventh World Values Survey (2017-2021). Well-being is measured using a subjective approach, such as happiness and life satisfaction. The ordered probit regression analysis indicates that increased per capita CO2 emissions decrease happiness and life satisfaction. Additionally, the higher individuals' financial and health levels, the higher their relationship with their happiness and life satisfaction will be. This study encourages further research investigating a specific country's relationship between CO2 emissions and the well-being of its population.
