Abstract

One species of canarium genus is Canarium indicum L which is an original plant from Indonesia. Utilization of some canarium nut species which spread around the world had been recognized, such as a source of nutritious food as well as its potency as raw material of medicine based on evidence-based scientific. In traditional medicine, was reported if canarium nut had been used for diabetes mellitus treatment, angina, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, expectorant, etc. This article aims to review the chemical composition, nutrient values, and potency of canarium nut as the raw material of medicine. Scientific data were obtained from online search results. From the searching was found that at least eight species of canarium nut reported which is related to chemical composition and its nutrition which also provide ethnopharmacological benefits. Overall results, all identified canarium nut species have a favorable chemical composition and nutritional values that can be utilized as functional, nutritional and medicinal food. Therefore, the result of this study also indicates if the canarium nut from Indonesia, C. indicum L., has not been thoroughly studied. That indicates by the lack of scientific paper which presented about C. indicum from Indonesia.

Abstract

The livelihoods of people in small islands are never disconnected from socio-economic problems and the degraded environment. In the long term, the living system will influence the surrounding environmental condition if the environment utilization is not sustain managed. This research aimed to assess the people's livelihood assets to encourage the living quality of local people. Qualitative and quantitative methods were implemented to analyze the data from questionnaires in deeply direct interviews. The variables to evaluate in the livelihood assets condition consisted of human capital, natural capital, social capital, physical capital, and financial capital, which covered the sampling region in South and North Maitara island. The basic capital of people's livelihood is presented as Pentagon Assets, and its strategies are grouped into intensification, extensification, and migration. The result showed that the component of livelihood capital assets depending on natural capital was 8.99, financial capital was 9.88, physic capital was 12.38, human capital was 15.06, and social capital was 16.64. The intensification and extensification consisted of the percentage of yard utilization was 11%, agriculture land utilization was 37%, empty land utilization was 24%, and arable land utilization was 12%. Moreover, migration as part of livelihood strategies in this region composed of permanent migration was 15%, and circular migration or commuter was 45%. In conclusion, agricultural land utilization is still dominant for local people, exerting circular migration to sustain their subsistence. Keywords: livelihood assets, sustain, environment utilization, small island

Abstract

Tidore Islands City is one of the cinnamon producers in North Maluku Province. Several Kelurahans in this area have cinnamon potential, one of which is Kelurahan Jaya. This area is a producer of cinnamon which is quite famous and is often traded. However, farmers are less interested in cultivating cinnamon, one of the reasons is that the price is far below the other two commodities, namely cloves and nutmeg. It's just that production at the farm level decreased because the sale of this commodity did not match the exchange rate received. In addition, the lack of public knowledge about cultivation will have an impact on its sustainability in the future as well as the lack of exploitation and product diversification. This Community Service activity aims to provide knowledge to farmer groups about cinnamon nurseries. This activity was carried out by the method of discussion and giving lectures which were carried out between the lecturer team and representatives of the CAWADA farmer group in Jaya Village. Community service activities were carried out in Jaya Village, Tidore Islands City on 16-17 July 2022. The writing method used a descriptive approach. The results of the farming business analysis show that the price of cinnamon bark is quite low when compared to clove and nutmeg commodities. The profit obtained by clove commodities can reach Rp. 9,500,000 – 38,500,000, -. / tree. Meanwhile, the price of dried nutmeg flower / mace is 9 times or Rp. 250.000,-/kg. Cinnamon plant nurseries can be done in Tidore Islands City because the condition of this area has an ideal topography and altitude for cinnamon plants. Several types of vegetable crops such as chayote, eggplant and chili as well as local fruits can be planted together through the Agroforestry system with fence and alley cropping patterns. The nursery stage is carried out through land selection, preparation of seeds to planting.

Abstract

Counseling the community around the forest on using home yards to plant horticultural crops is very important to maintain sustainable forests and reduce forest encroachment and massive logging. In this time of community empowerment, socialization was fulfilled through the counseling of the utilization of yards of households in Domato Village, which is a village near the Bird Bidadari Observation Forest, South Jailolo District, West Halmahera Regency, where part of this forest area will be employed as a Forest Area for Special Purpose in Education (KHDTK) by the Forestry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Khairun University. Based on the results of this activity, the knowledge of the local community still has to be improved regarding the effectiveness of planting in house yards. Therefore, more intensive counseling is required to encourage local households to utilize their home yards to meet their food needs. Abstract

Marfala wood, Matoa wood, and Gosale wood are types of wood that are often used and traded in North Maluku as the main building materials and furniture. Wood preservation aims to increase the service life of the wood, prevent pests and diseases, and reduce the risk of structural damage. One of the wood preservation methods used in this study is using Copper Sulfate (CuSO4) or terusi. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of copper sulfate or terusi on the durability of three types of local North Maluku wood against subterranean termite attacks. This study was conducted for 1 week in the Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture and for 3 months for termite tests in the garden land of Gamayou Village. The results of the study were then analyzed by calculating the average weight loss value, then the percentage of weight loss and wood resistance to termite attacks were then compared with standards referring to SNI 01-7207-2006. The results of the study showed that the average weight loss of marfala, matoa, and gosale wood without preservatives and with preservatives was (3.90% & 0.86%), (13.99% & 3.83%) and (12.12% & 3.23%), respectively. Based on these results, there was an increase in the durability class of the three types of wood from class IV to class II for matoa and from clas IV to I gosale wood, and from class II to class I for marfala wood. Keywords: CuSO4, Gosale, Marfala, Matoa, Preservative.
