Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the bearing capacity of the soil in Kates Village, Kauman District, Tulungagung Regency, as a subgrade in flexible pavement through California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing in the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Kadiri University. The tests were conducted with 56, 25, and 10 blows to determine their impact on the soil's density, strength, and stability. The results showed that soil with 56 blows had the highest CBR value of 28.660% at a 5.08 mm penetration, indicating excellent bearing capacity. The soil with 25 blows showed a CBR value of 17.060%, which is quite high, ensuring adequate stability and bearing capacity. Conversely, the soil with 10 blows had the lowest CBR value of 4.094%, indicating the need for additional compaction before being used in road construction. This research confirms that the number of blows has a significant impact on soil quality, with more intensive compaction improving the soil's density and stability. The final design CBR value obtained was 16%, leading to the conclusion that the soil in this area can be used as a subgrade for flexible pavement.

Abstract

Plastic waste, especially Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), is one of the biggest environmental issues in Kediri City, with a volume of 140 tons per month. This research aims to utilize PET plastic waste as an additional material in the Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course (AC-BC) mixture. The study was conducted using an experimental method with variations in PET levels of 0%, 6%, 8%, and 14% of the total weight of the mixture. The test was carried out using Marshall standards to evaluate performance parameters such as stability, flow, VIM (Void in Mix), VMA (Void in Mineral Aggregate), and VFB (Void Filled with Bitumen). The results showed that the addition of PET to 6% increased the stability of the mixture to 6300 kg, higher than the mixture without PET (6200 kg). The flow value increased with the addition of PET, reaching 3.8 mm at a rate of 14%. In addition, VMA and VIM tend to decrease, indicating an increase in the density of the mixture, while VFB achieves an optimal value at a PET level of 6%. This study concluded that PET waste can be used effectively to improve the performance of AC-BC mixtures, with an optimal level of 6%. The utilization of PET plastic waste not only improves the performance of road infrastructure but also contributes to the reduction of plastic waste, thus supporting environmentally friendly and sustainable construction solutions.

Abstract

Road pavement quality is a critical factor in supporting a country's mobility and economy. Around 40% of the road length in Indonesia suffers damage, including permanent deformation and early cracking. To overcome road damage, it is important to know the pavement quality parameters such as Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VMA), Voids in Mix (VIM), and Voids Filled with Bitumen (VFB), along with the factors that influence them, such as material characteristics. This study aims to determine the effect of the fine and coarse aggregate ratio on volumetric parameters in asphalt mixtures, including VIM, VMA, and VFB. The experimental method was carried out on four samples. Aggregate characteristic tests were carried out, including gradation tests. Volumetric tests were carried out on each sample with asphalt content of 4%, 4.5%, and 5%. The research results show that the smaller fine-to-coarse aggregate ratio would increase the VMA and VIM values and decrease the VFB value. Aggregate ratio significantly affects volumetric parameters, which shows the importance of selecting aggregate with the right size distribution and determining the right ratio to achieve optimal pavement performance. The results of this study can be used as a practical guide for optimizing asphalt mix design with better quality and durability.

Abstract

Air conditioning or asphalt concrete is formed from coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and asphalt. An aggregate is a collection of grains of crushed stone, gravel, sand, and other minerals in the form of both natural and artificial products. Coarse aggregate is sieve holder No. 8 (2.36 mm) retained aggregate while fine aggregate is sieve No. 8 (2.36 mm) passed aggregate. The problems that often occur in road pavement layers are poor durability and surfaces that are easy to wear out. This study aimed to find the maximum marshall value in the form of 60/70 penetration asphalt mixture stability. This study used an experimental method with a laston AC-BC test, the test was carried out with abrasion, gradation, specific gravity, and Marshal testing tests using marshal test equipment, following SNI 06-2489-1991, or AASHTO T245-90, or ASTM D1559-76. Using aggregates from the Kedak area, stability results of 3046, 4896, 3754 were obtained, which met the standards of the Bina Marga specifications standards. So that the aggregate from the Kedak area can be used as an alternative constituent material in road planning in the Kediri area because it is more efficient and has good durability.

Abstract

Infrastructure development is one indicator of a country's progress that cannot be ignored. Road infrastructure is an important part of the transportation system that connects different locations, facilitates human mobility, and transports goods. In the construction and maintenance of road infrastructure, soil plays a crucial role, so the condition and strength of the soil must be considered. Soil plays a significant role in construction as it serves as the foundation or base for building structures. Soil that has sufficient strength to support road loads will facilitate road construction. This study was conducted to determine the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value, so that appropriate actions can be taken to construct roads based on local soil conditions. The CBR method is commonly used in soil geotechnical testing for road planning. This method involves laboratory testing of soil samples to determine the California Bearing Ratio (CBR). The results show a CBR value of 22.5%, which falls under the category of very good. This indicates that there is no need for improvement efforts in the construction of the Jl. Panglima Besar Sudirman, Dsn. Bolawen Ds. Tiron Kec. Banyakan Kab. Kediri highway, allowing resources to be allocated to other areas in need of road infrastructure improvements to enhance accessibility and overall regional development.
