Abstract

This study was conducted to improve students' speaking skill. Most of the students found it difficult to speak even though they mastered many vocabularies and they were able to write correctly. Their difficulty occured because they were afraid of making mistakes. They were too shy to speak. Besides, lecturer's teaching  method was one of many factors causing this problem. In this study, the researcher used Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) to teach speaking for the students from the first semester of class 02 Slamet Riyadi University Surakarta academic year 2013/ 2014. Whole Brain Teaching is one of alternative method  which is effective to manage the class. The procedures of this method conducted based on Brain Based Learning. Brain learns something in five ways: seeing, saying, listening, doing, and feeling. When the lecturer teaches the classroom rules using Whole Brain Teaching, students' brain work maximally.  They see the symbols, listen the rules, say those rules, and make movement. When the teachers teach optimistically and entertaining, the students will have joyful feeling for having fun during teaching and learning process. The method used in this research was classroom action research. This study consists of 2 cycles; each cycle consists of three meetings. The procedures of this research is planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data gathered by using observation, field note, audio recording, and students' listening score. The development of students' speaking skill can be seen from the average of pre-test and post test score. The average of pre test score was 6.6. It became 7.3 in post test 1 and in post test 2 it became 7.8. based on this research, it can be concluded that Whole Brain Teaching can develop students' speaking skill. Hence, Whole Brain Teaching can be one alternative method for the lecturer to teach speaking.   Keyword: Speaking skill, Whole Brain Teaching, Action Research

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the effect of learning perception and attitude on students' learning performance while implementing communicative language teaching (CLT) in a vocational college. The quantitative study used a survey research method with a cross-sectional design. 270 students participated in the study selected using a voluntarily random sampling technique. These research respondents were among those who had completed intermediate English classes with the amplification of the CLT method. Data were collected using a questionnaire with a four-point Likert's scaling method from very disagree (1) to very agree (4) (α = 0.843). The obtained data were analyzed using ANOVA with the assistance of IBM SPSS 25. Results showed a significant effect of learning perception (β = .890; F = 1018.849; p = 0.000) and attitude on students’ learning performance (β = .850; F = 698.468; p = 0.000). Among the two, learning attitude had been the more influential factor in students' learning performance during the implementation of CLT. This study suggested that CLT could be a catalyst for learning perception and attitude to elevate students' learning performance in the context of EFL teaching in vocational college.

Abstract

This study aimed to explain project-based learning (PjBL) in the context of making airside and landside learning videos for aviation cadets and measure the effectiveness of the learning videos in improving their understanding of basic airport civil engineering material. This study used ADDIE development method to develop learning videos integrated in a project-based learning process with a quantitative approach. There were 48 cadets included in this study selected using a purposive sampling technique. A total of 24 cadets joined the control class taught using conventional learning method and a total of 24 cadets participated in the experimental class taught using PjBL by developing learning videos. Data were collected using needs analysis questionnaire, rating scale for understanding basic airport civil engineering material, and validation sheet. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test to address the research questions. Results showed that the cadets were able to develop valid learning videos through ADDIE procedure and they could increase their understanding on basic airport civil engineering significantly (F = 3.533; t = .969; p = .000).

Abstract

This study sought to develop prototype of B-ACE mobile learning application using Android operating system with an outcome-based education approach as a media to learn basic airport civil engineering. This study adopted the ADDIE development model. This study involved 72 aviation cadets of Airport Civil Engineering Department to complete the student needs analysis questionnaire and three lecturers who taught Basic English course in the department to complete the curriculum needs analysis questionnaire and conduct FGD. Results showed that the B-ACE prototype was developed through analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. Experts showed valid scores without revision as the result of translational validity test (x̄ = 3.86), thus, the B-ACE mobile learning prototype was in accordance with the airside and landside materials and the outcome-based education curriculum applied in higher education. The students’ responses were positive after learning using B-ACE (x̄ = 98.8%).

Abstract

In addition to characterizing people's distinctive thought and emotion patterns, personality traits also have an impact on cultural values and interpersonal interactions. Although the relationship between personality traits and intercultural communicative competence (ICC) has been extensively studied in a variety of educational contexts, there is still a dearth of research specifically looking at this relationship among English language learners preparing for careers abroad, especially in specialized fields like aviation. The objectives of this study are to: (1) identify the personality qualities that best support students' intercultural communicative competence; and (2) ascertain which ICC components need the most improvement. Surabaya Aviation Polytechnic students were given questionnaires to complete in order to gather data using a quantitative technique. The results show that (1) most students have relatively low levels of neuroticism and high levels of conscientiousness and openness, which are bolstered by positive social qualities like extraversion and agreeableness. This combination shows a well-rounded personality profile that promotes productive learning, teamwork, and mental health in the classroom. (2) Students have established a solid foundation of intercultural competency, exhibiting noteworthy strengths in awareness and thinking but still needing to work on their practical communication abilities.
