Abstract

Surabaya has been recognized as one of the best culinary cities in ASEAN according to TasteAtlas 2023/2024, particularly for its traditional dishes and authentic dining establishments. However, various English translations of the same traditional dishes appear across restaurant menus, potentially influencing foreign tourists’ perception of Indonesian cuisine. This study investigates the English usage and gastronomic elements embedded in the translation of traditional dish names on restaurant menus. Drawing on a dataset of 315 traditional dishes and their English translations extracted from 35 menus of four- and five-star hotels in Surabaya, this research applies AntConc software to analyze vocabulary frequency, collocation patterns, keyword distribution, and clusters. The linguistic patterns are examined alongside seven gastronomic elements: ingredients, cooking methods, appearance, flavors, the name of the dish’s creator, geographical origin, and transliteration, to evaluate how informative and persuasive functions are fulfilled. The findings show that the vocabulary used in the translations is relatively limited and repetitive, dominated by nouns denoting ingredients and past participle verbs denoting cooking methods. Six gastronomic elements appear frequently, with transliteration being the least utilized and the creator’s name absent. These results indicate that current translations prioritize informative over persuasive functions. The study suggests that menu translations should be standardized and incorporate gastronomic elements that enhance persuasive appeal to support culinary tourism.

Abstract

This research wil discuss the representation of three leaders in the novel A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. The three leaders discussed are Stannis Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, and Daenerys Targaryen. The three characters will be assessed with the critical discourse analysis approach of Halliday's ideational metafunction theory (2004). This research will examine the representation of the three leaders shown through their ideational functions by observing the transitivity of their clauses in the original version and their translation, then comparing the results of the analysis of the two versions. The research method is descriptive qualitative and data corpus processing using Sketch Engine tool to see transitivity in the depiction of the three characters and compare it with the translated version. The results showed that the characters Stannis and Joffrey were dominated by material processes (34.7% and 46% in the original text; 37.95% and 40% in the translation, respectively), while Daenerys was dominated by mental processes (45.8% in the original text; 48% in the translation). The shift in transitivity occurs due to differences in language and cultural structure, but it does not significantly affect the overall image of the character. The conclusion of this research is that the composition of process types affects the figure of the leader represented by each character. In addition, based on the process type components of the characters, there is no significant shift in the representation of the characters in the translated version. Research on this topic is expected to see how the translation process affects the ideational function in interpreting human experience.

Abstract

Different types of social or cultural background, combined with a region or social status, go into the making of spoken or written discourse. One of the interesting spoken discourses to discuss is political interview. It often reveals the intention of political leaders’ way of speaking. While there are those who are subtle in their way of talking, there are also a few who do not, one of whom is the Philippines’ president, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Known for his outspoken personality, he often states controversial things that influence his country and derive critics from various places. Using van Dijk’s (2004) framework, this study analyzes the macro and micro discursive strategies used by Duterte in delivering his views on other countries’ relations with the Philippines based on his most-watched English interview with Russia Today. The findings revealed that the macro strategies used by Duterte are positive self-presentation, negative other-presentation, and outside polarization. Meanwhile, the mostly micro discursive strategies used are implication, lexicalization, and example/illustration.
