Abstract

Abstract

Violation of language norms committed by an individual can result in sanctions or punishment. The penalties imposed in cases of hate speech may include fines or imprisonment. In the case of Bahar bin Smith and Yulianus Paonganan, there were language violations, particularly in the form of insults, defamation, and tarnishing the reputation of President Joko Widodo. Bahar bin Smith was sentenced to six months and fifteen days, while Yulianus Paonganan was sentenced to one year of imprisonment. Interestingly, in the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Bahar bin Smith’s case, there is no information regarding language violations. This raises questions about how a punishment for language-related crimes can be decided without linguistic evidence. This research is descriptive and qualitative, using a semantic approach to identify forms of hate speech. The linguistic forensic research results highlight the forms, types, and grammatical meanings of hate speech. Furthermore, the research findings indicate that the Supreme Court, in issuing decisions, is not always professional, lacks transparency, and exhibits negligence and carelessness, as evidenced by the issuance of a verdict without linguistic violation evidence.

Abstract

Deadline is an issue related to punctuality that highly seeks publics’ attention in their everyday life, especially for people in Indonesia who are known by their term of jam karet ‘always not being on time, describing as the stretches like rubber’. Coming up from the phenomenon, this study aims to reveal the metaphor of deadline expressed by Indonesians in Twitter. The data was collected using the hashtag feature of #deadline and filter feature on the first phase in gathering tweets related to deadline which were generated by Indonesian Twitter users. A group of tweets found through hashtag #deadline was subsequently analyzed using the concordance tool of AntConc to obtain the collocates and cluster, and was followed by Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) to determine the metaphorical expressions that brought about conceptual metaphor on deadline through domain mappings. The result of the study showed that Indonesian people make use of Twitter as a media to express their hustling days through hashtag metaphorically. The metaphorical expressions found were mapped to the source domain which reached to a conclusion that DEADLINE IS A TERROR. This outcome led to general idea that deadline was portrayed as something awful, threatening, and compulsive. Moreover, deadline is an embodiment of something full of adrenaline, challenging, and all rapid. The later portrayal resulted in a metaphor that DEADLINE IS A SURVIVAL GAME. In general, Indonesian Twitter users view deadline as a thrilling and unpredictable thing, either positively or negatively.

Abstract

This study examines the use of 'koto' (meaning 'city') in 107 village (nagari) names in West Sumatra, Indonesia, analyzing naming patterns, interpreting meanings, and exploring their connections to Minangkabau socio-cultural values. Data collected from the official website of West Sumatra's Badan Pusat Statistik reveal three key findings: four naming patterns ((head+modifier), (modifier+head+modifier), (modifier+head), and mixed pattern), eight semantic categories (spatial, temporal, personal names, plants, landforms, numerals, animals, and tools), and reflected socio-cultural values (communal nature, agrarian roots, and the philosophy of 'alam takambang jadi guru' or 'nature is a teacher'). The toponymy of Indonesian place names often incorporates elements meaning 'city,' such as 'kutha' in Javanese and 'kute' in Balinese and Acehnese, with 'koto' being prominent in Minangkabau. This research contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage by documenting toponymic traditions for future generations of the Minangkabau community, offering insights into their linguistic practices and cultural values as reflected in place names.

Abstract

In Javanese culture, a woman who has become a wife is called a kanca wingking (friend at the back). Along with the rapid development of technology and information, there are social changes in society. One of them is the shifting role of kanca wingking in Javanese society. This study aims to reveal the shifting role of kanca wingking from the perspective of the millennial generation. The research uses the theory of language variation and changes to analyze the shifting meaning of kanca wingking with a focus on three variables (gender, age, and education). This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data of this research is in the form of language collected through a questionnaire method using Google Forms. This questionnaire was limited to respondents of Javanese descent who were born and raised in the region, language, and culture of Java (East Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta). A total of 121 respondents were collected, consisting of two generations, namely generation Y and generation Z. The results showed that the shift in the meaning of kanca wingking from the perspective of the millennial generation almost completely occurred in the present. Generation Y tends to know the meaning of kanca wingking better than generation Z. The term kanca wingking is not completely abandoned but has a very different role in the household and views or perceptions among the community. The role of kanca wingking in the perspective of the millennial generation is more flexible, less rigid, and likes freedom, while the perspective or view in society tends to positively assess and support the achievements of a woman or wife.

Abstract

Abstract This study is based on the linguistic expressions used by (NH) addressed to (NA) which allegedly contain insult-type hate speech on Instagram. These linguistic expressions were brought into the legal domain and reported to the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigations, Sub-Directorate V of Cybercrime, Regional Police of South Sulawesi and categorized as a complaint-based offense. This study employs forensic linguistic investigation with the support of cognitive linguistics, aiming to analyze the framing, perspectives, and mental spaces within the linguistic expressions of the reported party (NH) and to determine whether these expressions constitute hate speech in the form of insults. This is a descriptive qualitative study using secondary data obtained from Evidence (E) and Investigation and Interrogation Reports from investigators at the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigations (Ditreskrimsus) of the Regional Police of South Sulawesi, Makassar City. This study reveals six types of frames used by NH to insult NA, including the frame of Islam, sin, prostitute, insult, threat, and insinuation. Based on perspective analysis, three viewpoints were identified: the perspective of the reported party (NH), the complainant (NA), and the investigators (police). The reported party (NH) engaged in hate speech in the form of insults by utilizing perspectives based on identity (religious and personal identity), accusations, and comparisons. Mental space analysis was conducted on four linguistic expressions, yielding two concepts from the blending of mental spaces: the concept of a prostitute and the concept of contradiction. Based on these analyses along with the utterances of seven pieces of evidence with (14) linguistic expressions, it is concluded that the linguistic expressions used by (NH) against (NA) have been proven to violate the Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE) Law Article 27 Paragraph (3) of 2016 and the Indonesian Criminal Code on defamation, Articles 310 and 311.
