Abstract

This study investigates a controversial Facebook post prosecuted under Indonesian hate speech law, focusing on a “bad prayer” directed at the president during the 2019 election period. This research was a case study of a hate speech that the Tembilahan District Court, Indragiri Hilir, Riau, decided. The data was collected from the case trial on the website of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia and the associated Facebook group.  Employing semantic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic analyses, the research explores how religious language can serve as a vehicle for politically motivated hate speech. Findings indicate that the expression, namely “Congratulations on the presidential inauguration, may he meet his end as soon as possible. Amen", constitutes minor hate speech by violating politeness principles and implying negative social judgment. The statement is motivated by the competition between two candidates in the 2019 presidential election, where the accused disapproved of the elected President Joko Widodo. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to forensic linguistics by introducing the concept of “bad prayer” and examining its sociopolitical and legal implications in Southeast Asian digital discourse.

Abstract

Digital financial inclusion has emerged as a strategic pathway to ensure that all segments of society—including those in remote areas—can access financial services fairly and easily. Despite the rapid growth of financial technology and increasing internet penetration, significant barriers still hinder the optimal use of digital financial services. This study develops an integrative model based on a systematic literature review of reputable international publications over the past decade, aiming to explore how financial literacy, attitudes toward technology, risk perception, and trust shape individuals’ decisions to adopt fintech services. The findings reveal that financial literacy not only drives fintech adoption but also enhances the quality of digital financial service usage. Meanwhile, risk perception remains a major barrier, whereas trust and positive attitudes toward technology act as key enablers. Fintech adoption serves as a crucial bridge toward broader financial inclusion, with open finance further strengthening this relationship by enabling more personalized, efficient, and integrated financial services. The study recommends strengthening digital financial literacy programs, enhancing consumer protection frameworks, and accelerating the development of open finance regulations as critical steps toward a safer, fairer, and more inclusive digital financial ecosystem in Indonesia.

Abstract

Poverty is no longer measured solely by a lack of income, but is increasingly understood as a condition of deprivation across multiple dimensions of life. This study aims to measure the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) of households in Indonesia using the Alkire-Foster (AF) method, utilizing data from the 2014 Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS), which remains the most recent wave conducted by the RAND Corporation. In addition, the study decomposes the MPI by geographic location (rural and urban areas) and calculates the contribution of each dimension and indicator to the overall MPI in both regions. The analysis reveals that 21.7% of households in Indonesia experience multidimensional poverty. On average, multidimensionally poor households suffer from 62% deprivation across the selected indicators, resulting in a national MPI score of 0.35. This figure reflects both the incidence and intensity of multidimensional poverty in Indonesia. The decomposition results indicate that multidimensional poverty is more prevalent in rural areas compared to urban areas, in terms of both incidence and intensity. Cumulatively, the standard of living dimension contributes the most to the MPI, accounting for 59.06% in rural areas and 51.19% in urban areas.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the source domain of the target domain of POLITICS and the nuances of its meaning in Indonesian online mass media. It employs a qualitative research method to investigate the conceptual metaphors of POLITICS using a corpus-based approach. The data were obtained from 350 Indonesian online news articles that discuss politics over a period exceeding 13 months, starting from the election campaign period to the post-election period. The total number of tokens in the entire corpus amounted to 144,852. The corpus was analyzed using the AntConc tool (version 4.2.4) by utilizing the 5L & 5R collocate feature and KWIC. The Metaphorical Identification Procedure (MIP) was applied to analyze metaphors. The findings demonstrated the conceptual metaphors with negative connotations, namely POLITICS IS A TRANSACTION, and POLITICS IS A KINGDOM, and neutral connotations, namely POLITICS IS PHYSICAL SPACE, POLITICS IS A DRAMA SHOW, and POLITICS IS LOWLAND. However, conceptual metaphors with negative connotations were significantly more prevalent in linguistic expressions, suggesting that these metaphors more accurately reflect the political realities of Indonesia during the late 2023 to 2024 period.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as the country with the most living language assets in the world after Papua New Guinea. However, one-third of the 718 indigenous languages in Indonesia are vulnerable and even threatened with extinction. Most of these languages are spoken in the central and eastern parts of Indonesia. Regarding efforts to protect, preserve and develop these vulnerable languages, the team of Program Studi Magister Linguistik, FIB, UGM took the initiative to provide language documentation assistance to the researchers and people in the Language Office (KB) of Nusa Tenggara Timur and the Language Office (KB) of Sulawesi Tenggara. Such facilitating and mentoring methods that were conducted include: firstly, observing and mapping the language aspects from the existing languages in NTT and Sultra to be decisively documented, secondly, model of providing assistance for documentation efforts, and thirdly, the writing form of documentation. After completing the facilitating and mentoring processes, it was expected that the researchers and documentation increased their passions and motivation in documenting the language aspects, their theoretical and methodological capacity in language documenting activities, and the number of documented languages. Besides, there was an increase of cooperation between Kantor Bahasa NTT and Sultra with Program Studi Magister Linguistik UGM. The results of this community service at the Language Office in NTT and Sultra show some completed activities i.e., (1) the identification of the legal basis for documenting the languages and mapping the potential language in NTT and Sultra to be documented, (2) the decision to document the linguistic aspects of maritime terms of the Kaera language in NTT, and words of wisdom or traditional expressions in Wolio language in Sultra, (3) the increase in the capacity of mentoring functions such as facilitating, presenting, feedback responding, delegating, participating, and inferencing, and (4) in addition to improving the ethics of mentoring, the teams worked together in terms of equality, cooperation and working together, and sustainability.

Abstract

There is still a lack of interest in researching affixal negation, especially among linguists, although the phenomenon of construction formation is interesting to explore. It has been understood that the negation dichotomy that Klima introduced is still commonly used in classifying the form of negation. It is classified into two forms: sentential and constituent negation. Based on Klima's negation dichotomy, it can be said that affixal negation is part of the subdomain in constituent negation. Indonesian and Japanese used the same strategy in constructing the affixal negation. Both languages use the negative prefix, which attaches to other constituents, to form the affixal negation construction. This research tries to explore and compare the process as well as the principles of forming the affixal negation in both Indonesian and Japanese. The main source of data used for this research is primarily taken from dictionaries and published articles related to negation. The comparison analysis is done using a theoretical contrastive analysis method to determine the contrast features and variables in Indonesian and Japanese affixal negation formation. The analyzed data shows that the borrowed affixes, change of sounds, word element, and derivation process are the main contrast features in affixal negation formation, especially in Indonesian and Japanese. In addition, the affixation process, role, and flexibility are the variable features during affixal negation formation in both languages.
