Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is focused on the fundamental competencies of students majoring in English and Literature, with the objective of identifying and evaluating their productive language skills and addressing the challenges they encounter in enhancing speaking and writing skills.Quantitative analysis serves as the methodology for this study. The analysis of the data reveals two key findings. Firstly, there exists a diversity of proficiency levels among students, predominantly at the intermediate level. Notably, writing proficiency remains a challenge, with only 53% of students averaging between 1-4 on the scale, indicating a lack of mastery. Similarly, when it comes to writing skills, 60% of students fall within the range of 1 to 4 on the scale. Secondly, challenges stem from various factors, including limited exposure to English outside the classroom, difficulties in grasping cultural context, and a lack of confidence in public speaking. Proposed solutions include the incorporation of interactive learning methodologies, provision of supplementary speaking sessions, and the promotion of cultural sensitivity through diverse activities.

Abstract

One way to evaluate English language skills is through the English Proficiency Test (EPT). This research aimed to develop the Internet-Based English Proficiency Test (IB-EPT) by evaluating its test items' validity, reliability, and practicality. The study followed a research and development approach incorporating qualitative and quantitative methods. The sample consisted of 24 students from UIN Alauddin Makassar. The developed English language test media received positive feedback from the expert validation and field trials. The results revealed that the validity of test items was confirmed, with a coefficient of 0.462 (r table = 0.44). Similarly, using Spearman-Brown product-moment correlation, the test items were reliable, with an index of 0.632, exceeding the critical value of the product-moment table (r table = 0.44). In addition, the students' evaluation of the product’s practicality yielded a score of 83.26%, categorized as “very good,” indicating the product was feasible. It is recommended that higher education policymakers should prioritize equipping campuses with comprehensive facilities, particularly information and communication technology, and provide specialized training for lecturers to develop effective computer-based and online assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how gender and learning modality (traditional vs. online class) influence speaking anxiety among fourth-semester students of the English Language and Literature Department. A total of sixty students, comprising 30 males and 30 females, participated in the study by completing a modified Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent-samples t-tests. The results show that speaking anxiety was consistently higher in the traditional classroom than in the online class across all FLCAS subscales, with significant differences favouring lower anxiety in online classes (p < .001). Gender differences were descriptive but not statistically significant in the traditional class, indicating that the high-pressure nature of face-to-face communication elevated anxiety similarly for both groups. In contrast, a significant gender difference emerged in the online class for the Fear of Negative Evaluation subscale (p = .033), with female students reporting stronger evaluative concern. Overall, the findings indicate that speaking anxiety is shaped more by learning modality than by gender, and that online settings may reduce certain anxiety triggers for learners. However, the limited sample size calls for further studies with larger and more diverse populations to improve the generalizability of the findings
