Abstract

A two-way communication model is a process of information exchange that involves reciprocal interaction between the sender and receiver of a message, in which both parties actively provide feedback to ensure clarity, understanding, and effectiveness of communication. This study aims to develop a relevant and applicable two-way communication model to enhance the competitiveness of Islamic boarding schools, particularly in the context of accepting new students and strengthening public trust. The research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate), combined with James E. Grunig's theory of two-way symmetrical communication. The study was conducted at two Islamic boarding schools in Sukabumi, West Java: Darussyifa YASPIDA, representing the Salafiyah typology, and Pondok Pesantren Assalam, representing the Khalafiyah typology. The model development process involved stages of needs identification, concept design, prototype testing, and dissemination of results. The model was validated by communication experts and boarding school practitioners, who indicated a very high level of feasibility based on criteria of effectiveness, relevance, and sustainability.  The final model emphasizes the principles of equality, participatory dialogue, and the strengthening of Islamic values as its main foundation. The implications of developing this model show significant potential in improving transparency, participation, and building public trust, which in turn can strengthen the competitiveness of Islamic boarding schools in accepting new students. Further research is recommended to test the application of this model in various Islamic educational institutions with more diverse regional, cultural, and typological characteristics to assess its consistency and effectiveness in a broader context.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of STEM integration on student performance in the Madrasah (school) Science Competition (KSM), focusing on how STEM-based learning enhances academic achievement. The growing importance of STEM education globally emphasizes its potential to improve students' scientific knowledge and critical thinking. Integrating STEM in Madrasah education, mainly through science competitions like the Madrasah Science Competition (KSM), challenges students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world contexts. Despite the increasing interest in STEM education, researchers have yet to fully understand its specific impact on student performance in KSM, particularly within the context of Islamic schools. Here, we examine how STEM integration affects student achievement in KSM. The research employs a qualitative approach, using thematic analysis to analyze open-ended questioning with students who participated in KSM. The results reveal that STEM integration on student achievement in KSM resulted in (a) scientific inquiry and problem-solving, hands-on experimentation, theoretical knowledge application, (b) use of technology and tools, and resource disparities, (c) increased engagement through STEM, and confidence in problem-solving, (d) limited access to resources, (e) collaborative learning in STEM projects, and team dynamics and support, (f) enhanced scientific understanding, and development of critical thinking skills, (g) improved KSM outcomes, and increased interest in science careers. The implications suggest incorporating STEM into Madrasah curricula can enhance academic achievement and foster critical thinking skills. Future research could explore the long-term impact of STEM integration on broader educational outcomes and investigate ways to scale STEM practices across Madrasah institutions.

Abstract

Mathematics is one of the essential subjects for developing a national economy. It is the fourth element of the STEM acronym. Therefore, teachers’ abilities need to be enhanced for the learning process to be effective. However, the majority of mathematics teachers in developing countries still have difficulty in obtaining professional development. The present study aims to identify the targets of mathematics teachers’ professional development (MTPD) and examines its prominence in the literature over the past five years. It takes the form of a systematic review. The first objective is realized through the use of a qualitative, deductive, and thematic approach. The second objective is realized using the VOSviewer software tool (version 1.6.15.0). The 28 articles identified in the study were sourced from the Scopus database and published between 2016 and 2020. The results show that MTPD focuses on the implementation of technology, inquiry-based learning, problem-solving, and contextual (real-world) problems in the teaching and learning (T&L) process. The term was most often related to “mathematics,” “professional development,” “study,” and “teacher.” The results of the network visualization analysis of MTPD incorporate (a) professional development-teacher; (b) professional development-mathematics; (c) professional development-learning; and (d) professional development-mathematics teacher. The results of the study have implications for teachers trying to implement a T&L strategy that actively involves students in solving mathematical problems. It is recommended that future researchers identify MTPD in reference to (a) age; (b) gender; (c) the duration of teaching, (d) teaching location (urban and rural), and (e) the need to use more databases.
