Abstract

The current food crisis has become a serious threat to humanity. Other issues such as climate change, farmer regeneration, and excessive use of chemical inputs at the producer level threaten sustainability in agriculture. The sustainability of agricultural practices among farmers remains questionable due to the small number of organic farmers in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of sustainability of rice cultivation and the factors that influence the sustainability of rice cultivation in various types of cultivation in Yogyakarta. Research on farm sustainability that is analyzed in a multidimensional (5 dimensions) and compares 3 types of cultivation has not been widely carried out in Indonesia. This research was conducted in Bantul and Sleman with 90 respondents. The analysis method used Multidimensional Scaling-RAPFISH and Tobit regression. The results showed interesting findings where the 3 types of rice cultivation are in the sufficient (moderately sustainable) category even though the 3 have differences in the use of inputs, especially in the ecological dimension. The factors of education, frequency of attending extension and activity in farmer groups, the use of good agricultural practices, land ownership, and type of cultivation had a positive effect on increasing the sustainability of rice cultivation in various types of cultivation in Yogyakarta. The results of this research have an impact on agricultural extension field education provided by the government to increase the sustainability of rice cultivation in Yogyakarta. It is recommended that the 3 types of rice farmers to pay more attention to the use of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to increase sustainability.

Abstract

Environmental issues today are driving consumer behavior toward choosing products with minimal chemical content. This trend puts pressure on farmers to meet consumer demand through semi-organic farming methods. It implies that products from semi-organic farming have a promising future. However, farmers' interest in adopting semi-organic farming methods remains relatively low, as indicated by the slow adoption process. The aim of this research is to examine the influence of attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, environmental concern, and environmental knowledge on the intention to adopt semi-organic farming methods, both directly and through the mediation of attitudes. This study is descriptive and verifiable, involving 136 shallot farmers as respondents from Kretek and Sanden Districts, Bantul Regency. The sample was determined using purposive sampling, and the analysis was conducted using SEM-PLS techniques. The results show that attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control have a positive and significant effect on the intention to adopt semi-organic farming methods. Environmental concern and environmental knowledge do not directly affect the intention to adopt semi-organic farming methods, but they must influence attitudes in order to impact the intention to adopt semi-organic farming methods.

Abstract

The PTPN XI’s sugarcane supply in the last five years has tended to decline. A strong partnership between sugarcane farmers and PTPN XI can be an alternative solution to overcome the scarcity of the sugarcane supply by being shown high satisfaction and loyalty. The aims of this study are: 1) to compare the level of satisfaction of millennial and old sugarcane farmers to the performance of PTPN XI and 2) to compare the level of loyalty of millennial and old sugarcane farmers in partnership. The millennial and old sugarcane farmers' satisfaction levels are used to analyze CSI, gap analysis, Z-test, and IPA. The loyalty levels used average table analysis and Z-test. The study samples were obtained from four sugar mills areas of PTPN XI: Asembagoes, Soedhono, Wonolangan, and Pradjekan.  The results showed that the satisfaction level category of millennial farmers was quite satisfied (65.68%), while the satisfaction level of old sugarcane farmers was satisfied (67.04%). Statistically, the results of the Z-test showed a significance value of 0.021. There was a difference in the average satisfaction level between millennial and old sugarcane farmers, where the satisfaction level of sugarcane farmers was higher than millennials. However, the study found that the loyalty of old sugarcane farmers was more elevated than millennials using the Z-test with a significance value of 0.011. Through this study, it is expected that the partnership between PTPN XI and the sugarcane farmers is getting better quality to achieve increased sugar production.

Abstract

Healthy chilli farming has the potential to increase both the output and income of farmers in improving farmer’s welfare through GAP implementation. The welfare of farmers encompasses more than just income and production, hence, the Farmer’s Terms of Trade (FTT) serve as a reference point for household prosperity in Indonesia. This research aims to: (1) compare the productivity of chilli farmers, (2) examine the farmer’s terms of trade, and (3) analyze the impact of productivity and other factors on the farmer’s terms of trade associated with three farming methods: healthy, semi-healthy, and conventional farming systems. The study was conducted in Sleman Regency, Indonesia, a region that has been implementing healthy-chilli farming system since 2021. A total of 106 farmers were interviewed, distributed across 6 areas known for their significant chilli production. The respondents were selected through a simple random sampling approach. The FTT is assessed through household income and subsistence terms of trade. The comparison of farmer productivity was analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis H test. The findings indicate that the productivity of healthy-farming is higher than other two chilli farming systems. The FTT for healthy- farming is higher and classified as prosperous, while others do not yet reach prosperous level. Moreover, subsistence terms of trade of healthy and conventional farming statistically different. The increase of FTT was significantly affected by productivity, planting area, and price of chilli, while the number of family member, non-family labor cost, and household expenditures can decrease the FTT.

Abstract

Shallot farmers in Bantul Regency know various onion varieties, both local and introduced varieties. Each variety has its advantages and disadvantages. Due to the wide variety of onion varieties available, farmers are faced with various choices. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence farmers' decisions to use shallot seeds of Crok Kuning and Thai varieties. Crok Kuning and Thailand varieties of shallots farmers in Bantul Regency often use. This study involved 50 farmers who used shallot seeds of Crok Kuning varieties and 50 farmers who used Thai shallot seeds. The analysis method used is logistic regression. The results showed that the main difference in decision-making between the two groups of farmers was in the aspect of reasons and expected benefits. Factors significantly influencing farmers' decisions to use Thai varieties of shallot seeds are education, land area, seed prices, seed access, productivity, seed resistance to plant disease pests (HPT), and influences from other parties. Education and land area have a negative influence. In contrast, seed price, seed access, productivity, seed resistance to plant disease pests (HPT), and other parties' influence positively influence the use of Thai onion seeds.
