Abstract

The research entitled improving students’ listening comprehension throughEnglish song in second grade of MTS Cijawura. The aim of this researchpaper is to investigate the improvement of students’ listening comprehensionthrough English song as a part of the learning process in the classroom. Thisresearch was an action research consisting of three cycles. The participants of this research were 32 students of second grade at MTS Cijawura in the academicyear of 2016/2017. The data obtained were qualitative and quantitative. Thequalitative data were gained by observation sheet, interview, and questionare. The quantitative data were gained from the listening test that were conducted before the implementations and after the implementation in cycle I, cycle II, and cycle III. The actions implemented in each cycle were using English song that enable the students to improve their listening comprehension. The research findings from the test in first cycle until third cycle that by using of English song, students’ could improve their listening comprehension. The means score from 53 in pretest, 63.4 in cycle I, 77.7 in cycle II, 83.4 in cycle III. There were some good improvements in some aspects such as their new vocabulary and motivation to learn English  more. Futhermore most of students give positive responses toward the use of English song in teaching listening comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the spatial layout of the interest of visitors in the Library of SMA Negeri 1 Ciwidey. The research uses descriptive qualitative methods. This study involved three informants, namely one librarian and two users. The results showed that the spatial design which includes furniture, air circulation, sound system, and comfort in the SMA Negeri 1 Ciwidey Library is good. This makes the interest of students visiting to take advantage of the high library. However, in terms of lighting and color management, the lighting is still dim and the paint color used is dark. This affects the activities of users in their activities in the library. In addition, the building area that is not in accordance with the number of users makes the room look cramped.Keywords: school library, spatial design, visitor interestABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tata ruang terhadap minat pengunjung di Perpustakaan SMA Negeri 1 Ciwidey. Penelitian menggunggakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Penelitian ini melibatkan tiga orang informan, yaitu satu orang pustakawan dan dua orang pemustaka.  Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa desain tata ruang yang meliputi perabot, sirkulasi udara, tata suara, dan kenyamanan di Perpustakaan SMA Negeri 1 Ciwidey sudah baik. Hal ini menjadikan minat kunjungan siswa untuk memanfaatkan perpustakaan tinggi. Namun, pada aspek pencahayaan dan tata warna masih kurang karena pencahayaan masih redup dan warna cat yang digunakan gelap. Hal ini berpengaruh dalam aktivitas pemustaka dalam beraktivitas diperpustakaan. Selain itu, adanya luas gedung yang belum sesuai dengan jumlah pemustaka menjadikan ruangan terlihat sempit.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pentingnya implementasi kurikulum merdeka di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui 1) implementasi kurikulum merdeka di SMK Al Huda Kedungwungu Indramayu, 2) kendala implementasi kurikulum merdeka di SMK Al Huda Kedungwungu Indramayu, dan 3) upaya untuk mengatasi kendala-kendala dalam implementasi kurikulum merdeka di SMK Al Huda Kedungwungu Indramayu. Tempat Penelitian ini adalah SMK Al Huda Kedungwungu Indramayu. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, observasi dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis interaktif Miles dan Huberman meliputi reduksi data, display data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan 1) Implementasi kurikulum merdeka belajar di SMK Al Huda Kedungwungu Indramayu melalui tahapan input, proses dan output, 2) kendala-kendala implementasi kurikulum merdeka yaitu perlunya peningkatan kompetensi guru, sarana dan prasarana pendukung pembelajaran perlu ditingkatkan, perlunya menciptakan suasana pembelajaran efektif sesuai dengan keadaan industri, dan 3) upaya mengatasi kendala implementasi kurikulum merdeka yaitu meningkatkan kompetensi guru, menjalin kerjasama dengan pihak industri untuk, pengembangan metode pembelajaran yang menciptakan suasana kerja di industri

Abstract

The ability to use a language to convey ideas, feelings and thoughts orally is called speaking. This shows that speaking skills are crucial to learn, including for students at school. In this way, teachers are expected to be more innovative in finding learning methods or models that can improve students’ speaking skills. The small group discussion learning model is considered to be the right treatment because it can increase students’ confidence in speaking, increase interaction between students, and students become more active in contributing to learning. The aim of carrying out this research is to find out how the application of the Small Group Discussion learning model to students affects their speaking skills, especially in conveying opinions orally in English. This research used a quantitative approach with experimental research method. This research was carried out at MA Plus Darul Hufadz Jatinangor. Participants in this research were students from classes X-A and X-B, each class consisting of 20 students. Data was collected using tests in the form of presentations from students. The results show that implementing the Small Group Discussion can have a significant influence on students’ ability to convey opinions orally using English. This is proven by the average (mean) score of the experimental class learning results reaching 74,20, while the mean score of the control class only reached 65,00. It can be concluded, that the Small Group Discussion can have a positive impact on the learning process and student learning outcomes, especially in language skills. By implementing Small Group Discussion, students are seen interacting with each other more often, they show a positive response to the application of this learning model in their learning activities.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the skills that students must have be able to communicate confidently, exchange ideas or ideas, collect information, and share information with others. However, students now have a lot of difficulties when speaking or just saying words in English. Because they are afraid of making mistakes in pronouncing good vocabulary. Even though speaking is a goal that must be achieved in learning English. One suitable solution is the problem-based learning approach, which allows students to participate actively in their learning, share ideas, and boost their self-confidence. This study aims to find out whether the problem-based learning method (PBL) with the use of song lyrics in learning can improve students' understanding of speaking skills. This research was conducted using a quasi-exsperimental quantitative method. This research involved 30 students in grades XI-1 and 30 students in grades XI-3 of SMA Karya Pembangunan Cicalengka. Students will be placed in two classes, namely the experimental group and the control group. The class begins with a Pre-test, and the Post-test is carried out at the last meeting after the treatment. The researcher obtained data from the results of the pre-test and post-test of students. From the data analysis, the scores in the experimental group and the control group increased. However the improvement in the experimental group was better than in the control group. In the experimental group, the average pre-test score was 57.9, and the post-test score was 75.6. The control group's pre-test average was 54.86, and the post-test was 66.53. The data showed that the experimental group's post-test average (75.6) was higher than the control group's (66.53), supporting the hypothesis that problem-based learning with song lyrics improves students' speaking skills.

Abstract

As one of English basic skills, writing is considered the most difficult skill for students, such as arranging correct sentences, writing the topic sentence, organizing ideas, and lack of vocabulary. Therefore, an appropriate learning model and media that support understanding and development of writing skills can help students to increase their writing ability. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Project-Based Learning through the Canva application to improve students’ writing achievement in describing historical and tourism places as one of the basic competencies that students should master at the senior high school level. This study aimed to find out whether Project-Based Learning and the Canva application influence students’ writing and to analyze the development of students’ writing after implementing PjBL by making written text using the Canva application.  The writers used a quantitative method which is a quasi-experimental research design by applying a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. The data were obtained through the writing test in collecting students’ scores. To analyze the data, the writer used a t-test with a significant level of 0.05. The samples were two classes in the tenth grade of SMA Karya Pembangunan Cicalengka which consisted of 66 students. Based on the research analysis, students’ average score on the pre-test was 55.3 and students’ average score on the post-test was 75.37. The result also showed that ttable was 1.669 and tvalue was 2.924, which means that ttable was higher thantvalue at significant level 5%. It indicated thatH0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the result of t-test calculation, it can be stated that the use of PjBL through Canva application is effective to facilitate students in improving students’ learning achievement, especially in writing descriptive text about historical and tourism places.

Abstract

The study aims to determine teachers’ emotional intelligence levels based on student perspectives and is supported by principal assessments. Besides, the research aims to identify the extent of learners’ engagement and assess if there is any connection between the emotional intelligence of teachers and learning engagement in EFL classes for students. The research population included students and principals of Madrasah Aliyah 5 Garut. For this study, a sample that involved 60 students was selected using disproportional stratified random sampling techniques from class X (n=30) and class XI (n=30). To collect data, the writers used a questionnaire that evaluated variables such as teachers’ emotional intelligence and students’ learning engagement in EFL classes. The descriptive analysis method was used to analyze data, while Pearson Product Moment with SPSS 22.0 for Windows was used for bivariate analysis. The research findings suggest that the emotional intelligence level of teachers is medium from the student's point of view with an average score of 10.07, while from the principal's assessment, it is high scoring an average of 12.2. There was a moderate level of students’ learning engagement, with a mean score of 12.46. Hypothesis analysis also found that there is a positive and significant relationship between teacher emotional intelligence and student learning engagement with a fairly strong correlation level. It can be concluded that teachers need to increase their emotional intelligence so that student learning engagement in EFL classes increases.

Abstract

As technology progresses rapidly, e-portfolio have been utilized by teachers to hone their students’ language skills. Social media is a viable option as a platform for e-portfolio since it has been a part of people’s daily life and learning. It allows students to compile and share their work publicly and they are accustomed to it. It is a great place to learn writing as well. This research focuses on revealing the utilization of weblog-based social media e-portfolio and investigatInstagramnts’ attitudes toward e-portfolio on social media (Instagram), along with finding out the circumstances behind their attitudes. The participants of this study were the students of XI IPA 1 class of SMA Istiqamah Bandung academic year 2022/2023. They were assigned to a personal letter-writing task and interviewed. This qualitative case study aims to discover the students’ attitudes toward writing assignment portfolios in social media since attitude in language learning yields a deciding factor of whether students are going to get engaged in the process or not. The data were collected through an interview, teacher’s field notes, and the collection of the students’ writings. The data is then analyzed through the organization of data, data exploration and coding, data description, findings report, findings interpretation, and validation. The results indicated that students held positive attitudes toward it although not in every category of each attitude aspect. Students expected improvement and managed to be positively engaged in the learning process.

Abstract

In learning, simple present tense is the basic tense that should be mastered by the student and descriptive is one of the text types uses present tense. Descriptive is used the researcher as the text that let the students apply their writing ability in using present tense. This research paper explores the analysis of students’ errors for writing simple present tense in descriptive text. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out the types of error that students made in writing descriptive text and the main factors that causing students errors in writing descriptive text. The research design used case study, with qualitative approach. The participants are 19 students of tenth grade at SMK Harapan 2 Rancaekek. This study used observational checklist, field notes, document analysis, and interview. In interview, the researcher only selected 6 students are divided into 3 categories, namely high achiever, middle achiever, and low achiever. The result of this study showed two points, they are: first, there are three types errors those the students made in writing descriptive text omission, addition, and misformation. The second is main factors that causing students’ errors in writing descriptive text were understanding about grammar exactly in simple present tense, faced difficulties when should write English using tense (present tense) into written and lack vocabularies
